First Miss Cantillon announced the Accelerated Reader winners! They are Shannon, Collin, Kaite F, Pablo, Kathleen J, Juliana, Lance, and Yasmin. Congratulations, Yasmin, you are our top reader! Then we talked about how Cantillon Chronicle was done. After that was science. We learned about muscles. We measured muscles. Next was vocabulary. We corrected our vocabulary. We are in unit 2. Then we had recess.
After recess we had music. We practiced on the keyboard. When that was over at 11:00, we had spelling. We did some of our spelling activities and played spelling tic-tac-toe. I love spelling activities. Spelling tic-tac-toe is tic-tac-toe but you have to spell a spelling word right to put down your mark. Finally, it was lunch.
After lunch we had D.E.A.R. This means drop everything and read. Except for the Cantillon Chronicle reporter (me!) got to work on her writing. Afterwards we had reading we read some of Holes. Then it was the Human Rosary. I said a Hail Mary with my first grade buddy. We also got a scoop of ice cream from Baskin Robins. Our secret student today was Justin. Congratulations, Justin. We started our day out with delightful Spanish with Miss Pearla. We had no homework but we did have to go over our Spanish verbs. Then she passed out a worksheet. We did a little bit of that then she said we ran out of time and we will finish it tomorrow in class with her.
After that we had D.E.A.R. I am reading a book called No Hurdle Too High. We read for twenty minutes. We had to write a middle part for the book Holes. (Which I’ve already finished.) Our table had to agree what we should put for the middle. Then the teacher picked what group had the best middle part for Holes and the best one would go in our reading journals. Later on, we had spiced peaches. The teacher was preparing for that when we were doing the Holes thing. She bought peaches then added cinnamon to it. I thought I was fairly good.
About 2 minutes after that we went out to go play a game of team ball with three balls. Here’s how to play: there’s a line in the middle of the pavement. One team goes on one side then the other team goes on the other side. We put the three balls in the middle of the line then we say, “On the mark. get set, GO-O-O!!! Then you get the balls and throw them at each other. If you get hit you have to go to the other side in the back and if you get the ball throw the ball at the other team. If your out and you get someone out on the other side then you’re back in. If someone on your team catches it, you go back in.
Oh and I forgot to tell you, Miss Cantillon does this thing and it’s a paper clip chain. We have paper clips on the top of the white board and if we’re good, we earn a paper clip. When the paper clip reaches the bottom of the white board then we get 15 minutes extra recess. Our paper clips got to the bottom so now we had extra recess. So we played three-ball team ball.
Once we got in from that, we did math. We went over our math homework then we did some little math exercises. After that we went to pizza hot-lunch. (We had to go out early because pizza hot lunch is across the street.) We ate then we went out to play three-ball team ball. We played that and then Miss Cantillon called us in to art with Mrs. McGarry. Once we entered the science lab to do art she had us start to paint colors on note cards. I made green, red, blue, purple and maroon. Then we went over our homework in science. After that, we did a computer test to see what were our reading levels. Then we went to the library and looked at books then we packed up and went home.
Hello, I’m Kathleen D. and I am the reporter for October 4, 2006. In this article I’ll be telling you about what happened today at school.
In the morning we did journal writing about “peace building.” This is our school’s virtue of the month. When we finished journal writing, we had Spanish. We wrote down definitions and played a game called “pase, pase.” This game is when you have cards with Spanish words printed on them and you pass the cards around the room. Then you say the word out loud.
Once Spanish was over, we had D.E.A.R. This stands for “drop everything and read.” We did this for twenty-five minutes. I personally love D.E.A.R. because I love to read.
Next, we worked on our vocabulary scripts. We sat with our partners and made up a short script with seven words or more. I was partnered with Shannon. We did this for about ten to fifteen minutes.
Fortunately, recess finally arrived. It was super fun as Miss Cantillon gave us ten extra minutes. That was really great! Spelling was fun because we played a game called “Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe.” This game prepares us for the Spell-a-thon next week. After the spelling game, we moved on to math. We started with our division speed drill and corrected our math homework. Personally, I found the math homework to be a little bit challenging.
Afterwards, we had science. Mr. Jeanson had to have surgery, so he wasn’t here today. Our substitute, Mrs. Akayama, was here and we’ve had her in fourth grade as a substitute. Science was interesting because we started a new lesson about the bones and how they work.
When science class was finished, in our next class we worked on our podcaast. For some unknown reason, Mr. Guay, our P.E. teacher, wasn’t here. Therefore, Miss Cantillon let us go outside for ten minutes since we didn’t have P.E. class.
During writing, we worked on our body paragraphs in our autobiographies for about twenty-minutes.
During social studies, we read a story about the Marks family, who were Russian immigrants. I thought the story was very interesting.
Hi, I’m Tyler! Today when I got to school, I did my morning journal. After, we had Student of the Month. Then my friend, Collin, got an award. It was a long time until we were done but the time went by fast.
Afterwards, we went back to our class and we had three tests to do: vocabulary, spelling, and science. First, we had vocabulary. I think I did well, and a lot of my friends probably did well too. Then we had spelling. We had to do 40 words. It was okay, but at the end I got confused with three words. Finally, we had science. It was the definitions on the front then we had to unscramble the words on the other side.
Once that was done, we went out for recess. Everyone in my class ran out the door like a cheetahs chasing after their dinner. Jason said, "Hey Tyler do you want to be on our team?" Then we went back into our class. Jason and I were putting the balls away, and the class was already across the street. We ran as fast as we could and caught up to them. We went inside with the church and then we sat down. We waited for a few minutes and then we were singing and praying at mass.
Our class went back to our classroom. We got to read, "Time for Kids." I learned about spinach. Do you know that spinach can get you really sick because there are a lot of bacteria and germs in it? After that we had to write some things we learned from it. Next, Miss Cantillon announced our Star Citizen. It was Justin S. Manci won the weekly drawing for Scholar Dollars. Finally, we packed up to leave, and that was our day at school. BYE!
Today we are writing in our journals. We are trying to catch up on things. We are going to practice our ITBS testing that will test us on some of what we know, but today we are only practicing. Following this is science.
We have a different teacher for science; he is pretty strict but a really cool guy. Today in science we are learning about arteries and about our test and what we need to know. Next, we are writing in our organizer for science. Did you know bronchi are air sacs?
Now we’re on to vocabulary. Right now we are on Unit 3. We draw pictures for each word. I really like to do this because it helps me understand.
Then we are going out for recess! We have 15 minutes to play. Sometimes, we get extra. Also, you can take an AR quiz, which is part of a program we have. Then we are off to music. We are playing keyboards and learning how to read notes. We had a test today and it was worth 10 points. I received a 10 on my test! About 30 minutes later we are having spelling. In spelling we are probably going to do spelling activities. We have to turn in 3 spelling activities on Friday.
Well, we actually didn’t do what I expected. We are with our 6 o’clock partners and we are doing spelling hangman or spelling tic-tac-toe. We also played Let’s Make a Deal, which is when the teacher would look in our desk or binder and if we were prepared with all of our school supplies, we earned a piece of candy. (She asked me 3 questions.) Have you ever earned candy in school?
At 11:45 we go out to lunch. Our lunch lasts 30 minutes. Finally, lunch was over and we dove into the world of books. We have DEAR (which means Drop Everything And Read). DEAR is my favorite part in school. When our DEAR time was over, we read part of Holes out loud (our class novel).
Afterwards, we went to math class and checked our homework. The page was 31 numbers (6-28 evens). Now we are learning double digit multiplication! Next we learn about number lines and opposites. After that we have a 2-minute coffee break. This is when we get to stretch. Now we are on with social studies. We are talking about Star of India (a future field trip). After that we are doing Immigration Jeopardy! School is over!
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, until 8:30, we did our morning journal entries. Next, we had Spanish. During Spanish, we had a quiz. I think I did well. Then we had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read). We then talked about the themes of Holes. After that, we had vocabulary. Then we went out to recess.
After recess, we watched a LA ( Language Arts) video that explained nouns. During math, we first did a division speed drill and then learned how to use a table to solve a problem. Finally we went to lunch.
After lunch, we had art. We mixed the primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) to make new colors. Next, we had Science. We played Science Review Jeopardy. The team captains were Collin and Tyler. I was on Collin’s team. Tyler’s team won by one word that I forgot! Next, we had Library. While one group went to Library, the other fixed their five-paragraph essays. Then we packed up to go home.

Welcome! My name is Samuel H. and I am going to be your school reporter today.
Spanish started rapidly because tests need to come back to us. Mrs. Pearla said that Kathleen J, Sammy, Pablo, Juliana, and Yasmin all earned very goods or excellents on their tests. Afterwards we finish our stories about (A Visit to the 7-11 Store). Then we head for D.E.A.R. (I read a book called Maze of the Beast and it is good for boys and girls.)
Then we went right to Vocabulary. We partnered with our 12:00 partners. (Mine was Abby.) We tried to do Synonyms and Antonyms but we only did a few, but Miss Cantillon said it was ok. Next was recess!
Recess is when we go out have snack and play for 15 minutes. When we went down we almost ran like deer. Most of us played Team-Ball and soccer at the P.E yard.
RING!! RING!! Its time to get in our class. Quickly we went to Spelling.
This time we had our 3:00 partners and we could either do spelling hangman, spelling tic-tac-too, or just say any word and they spell it. Twenty-five minutes later, we headed for Math.
We started math homework and gone over it. I learned more when students in my class were doing well when they were writing on the board. Ring!! Ring!! Time for lunch! We ate and play team-ball or soccer. Also, we can take a reading test in the library. After lunch we had Science.
We took a test and I think I did will and even my friends think they did well. Really we took up all the time for the test. Then we had P.E.
We finally played Capture the Flag and I was so good that I felt that I had longer arms. Once we get back, we had Social Studies.
We took a social studies test. It was long but was pretty easy. Then we played a game that we had to act what the paper we grab in the box without looking and do it. (I had to act as I just fell in love.) Then we packed up to go home.
Also, we’re starting to think of some songs for social studies groups! I hope you look at the other Cantillon Chronicles!
Hi, I’m Ryan H.!
We are starting our great day with our journal entries! I am writing about what makes me unique. I think I’m a great artist! Once we are done, we read a book. I just finished a book called How To Eat Fried Worms. I recommend this book for everybody. I would tell you about the book, but you should read it!
Now we are handing out AR awardk. Kathleen J., Sammy H., Collin D., Yasmin and Makena M. get them. The person who won is…Sammy! Congrats, you have won 30 Scholar Dollars from the raffle.
When that was over, we dove into the Iowa ITBS practice booklet. Sometimes it’s easy and sometimes it’s tough. We are almost done and I’ve gotten 100% correct. (Yay! Finished) Now we are checking our homework. (I wonder how I did...) Yes! I got 100%! And we get to play a math game now.
Oh, wait! OH YEAH– a spelling bee (I’m good at spelling…atl east that’s what lots of people say). Aww! I was out but I at least I got in the bottom four. But I got sparkled. Now we play 24 ( I hope I win). Aww! I lost, but I won once. Up next– recess.
Back again. (Panting.) Man, I’m tired. During recess we played dodge ball. It was a lot of fun. Now we have D.E.A.R. I don’t have to read because I’m supposed to do my report. Next is reading. We are checking our reading. Aye! Now we are studying pirates in social studies. It was fun. Yes! Now we get to go to computer class. We get to do our saint biography reports. (Somebody was doing something he shouldn’t have, so he got a citation.) After that we have more reading. We were just talking about paragraph beginnings.

Hi, I am Kathleen J. I am here to report about what happened in class today, Friday, October 13, 2006. This report will be posted in the Cantillon Chronicle in our class webpage, www.misscantillon.com.
The first thing we did in school today was to write a Bible verse. After that, the sharing team of our postcard geography program read a postcard we received from Minnesota. Then, we took a spell-a-thon test which included the 50 words on the fifth grade spell-a-thon list. I think I did very well. Afterwards, we started to read an article in Time for Kids and we answered the questions on the sheet entitled, "What's the Point?".
The questions we had to answer included: 1.What is the main idea? 2. What are two facts that you learned about in the article you read? and others. Once that was done, we went to computer class with Mr. Martin. In computer class, we finished a Powerpoint presentation on St. Francis of Assisi. Later, we went outside to have recess and while we were playing, it started to rain!
We also had a pep rally during recess for the Junior Varsity and Varsity volleyball teams and for the flag football team. Do you know what a pep rally is? A pep rally is when a group of people cheer for their sports teams. The senior yard kids gathered in the senior yard to cheer for SMA's sports teams. It was so much fun! Following that, we finished up our "What's the Point?" sheet for about 15 minutes until our P.E. teacher, Mr. Guay, came in to take us to our P.E. class. During P.E., we played capture the flag and the yellow team won. After we got back to our classroom, we worked with our 7 o'clock partners and finished our vocabulary activities. Towards the end of the day, we went to the junior yard to see our first grade buddies for our buddy reading time. My buddy, Mia and I read a book called Rhinos Who Surf.
Finally, Ms. Cantillon announced the Star Citizen of the week, Kathleen D. and the Secret Student, Pablo O. Congratulations, Kathleen D. and Pablo. Great Job! I really had fun at school today. Hello, my name is Juliana L. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter for today. This week as you know we have ITBS testing. That’s what we did first. We had to do the vocabulary and reading comprehension test. I thought it wasn’t super easy or super hard. It was okay.
Then we had vocabulary for about thirty minutes. We checked pages thirty-eight through forty-one. Most of us didn’t finish so we went over it a little more. After, we started working on our vocabulary scripts with our ten o’ clock partners. Once that was done we had recess on time because right after we had music.
In music we had a quiz on the C, F, and G chords. We all did very well. Next in grammar we completed our daily oral language #2 exercise from a couple of weeks ago. Following that we went to lunch ten minutes early. That means we had forty minutes of recess! When that was over we had DEAR followed with reading. In reading we finished the ending of our story map for Holes. During math time we checked our math homework and played a new game called dueling decimals. It was really fun. Afterwards we made a journal with construction paper and lined paper for the Euterpe (Star of India). Then we wrote one entry and got in our crews for the sea shanties. Kathleen was our Secret Student for today. Finally we packed up and went home.
Hello, my name is Makena M. and I will tell you what we did today in class.
First, we wrote in our Euterpe entry (Star of India). Next, we had to do our ITBS testings. "SCARY!" The first thing we did was Reading Comprehention Part 2. Then, we did Spelling and we started at 9:23 and ended at 9:35 a.m. Then, we did capitalization and punctuation.
Once that was done we got to play Let's Make a Deal. I got 2 candies, because I had my three pencils and my papers were in my folder.
At 10:15 we went out to recess. I played with Kathleen J. and Juliana, as always. We got extra recess. We were all so happy. After recess, we went inside our classroom and heard that we had the highest percent average out of K-8 for the Spellathon. We had 96% . Our goal was 95% and we got higher. It was all because of us practicing our spellathon words. Next we had vocabulary and got with our 10 o'clock partners. Mine was Kathleen J. It was really fun.
Then, we did math. I hoped I had a close game with a game called dueling decimal. I'm good at that game.
Next thing I knew it was pizza lunch. I had cheese pizza. I had recess after that and played freeze tag. Sadly, the bell rang.
Once we left from recess we went to art. We finished our color wheels. I know I finished, but I'm not sure about everybody else. Next it was off to science with Mr. Jeanson. We had to put one item out of our desk and put it on the back table. I put a sharpener. We had to put them in types of groups. That was fun also.
Afterwards we had library/writing. I went to library L-Z.. The other group A - J did writing then we switched and in writing I wrote about my life. Miss Cantillon taught us about showing and not telling in our writing. When that was finished we packed up and rushed out the door . Miss Cantillon could not announce the secret student today. I wonder who it was? That was today's Cantillon Chronicle Report.
Hi this is Pablo O., number 13, and I am writing the Cantillon Chronicle for Wednesday, October the 18, 2006.Today in the morning, at seven-thirty, I went to review science with Mr. Jeanson with a couple of other students. When it ended we went upstairs to Miss Cantillon’s class and did our journal entry for today. Then we had ITBS testing and we did Usage and Expression and we also did Math Concepts and Estimation. I had a little trouble with the math.
Next, we had recess and played kickball. After that, we went back to class and took our math test. Too bad I didn’t do the extra credit. Anyways the math test took a long time that it was now lunch. When that short 30-minute lunch ended, we went back to class.
Afterwards, when science class came, we studied the 5 animal kingdoms and we also had to classify some objects from the class. Then when science finally ended the fun part of the day came - P.E. I like it because we got to play capture the flag. When it sadly ended we still got to do something fun (but not too fun). It was to make up our sea shanties with the group you’re on for the Star of India, (I’m with the Galley Crew). Finally when the day ended I got to go to soccer, do my homework, eat supper, and go to bed.
Hi, I am Manci and I`m going to tell you about our day. First we had to work on our Eurterpe Journal. Then we had to work on the ITBS testing. I did pretty well, but I never got to finish the last one.
After that, we had recess and I played basketball with Ana, Kathleen J, Juliana, and Makena. Next we had vocabulary skits. I think everyone did well (and Miss Cantillon thought so, too).
Our next class was social studies and we went outside to work on our sea shanties in our crews. After that we had lunch.
In computer class we worked on our saint biography cards. It was challenging because we had to copy images, insert text boxes and put our information in a table. At first it was a little hard but I got it.
Here’s some good news! Miss Cantillon said we had a 30 minutes recess. We earned 15 minutes for getting a 96% average on our Spell-a-thon test and 15 minutes for our paper clip chain getting to the bottom. When we came back from recess the fourth grade was already outside ready to go home. For once they beat us. That ends the day. See you next time.
Hi my name is Enissa R. and I’m reporting live from Miss Cantillon’s 5th grade class. Today we’re doing I.T.B.S. testing. I have to admit sometimes I get distracted. Next, we went to computer class that was a lot of fun! Then it was time for P.E., we run a lot when playing capture the flag. It is a very physical game.
After that, we had “Buddy reading” with our first grade friends. I read Scary, Scary Halloween to my buddy, Madeline. She understands what I read to her, she has been reading for awhile. We also wrote Happy Halloween cards to them and brought activities for them. Once that was done we went to have extra recess for the paper clip chain. Before recess Miss Cantillon always says, “ Play for fair and for fun or your recess will be done.” I played kickball with Sammy and Collin.
Once that was finished, it was time to go home. Finally we packed up. Afterwards Miss Cantillon gave us some candy. Snickers is my favorite because it has nuts.

Hello, my name is Jason S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today, October 23, 2006. Today was the last day of ITBS testing. That’s what we did first. One test was maps and diagrams and other test was reference materials. I thought they were both easy.
After recess Miss Cantillon said, “We’re going to watch the movie "Holes" and we were going to have a surprise.” And what do you know she brought out some yummy popcorn! After we watched 45 minutes of the movie we went outside for lunch.
After lunch we went inside the classroom to have some reading time. I am reading a book called, Skateboard Tough, I am really enjoying this book because it has a lot of new tricks I don’t know. After reading was over we had a math lesson. The lesson was on the many ways to add.
Following math, we went to see a band presentation. Stella Maris is starting a school band, and they showed us the instruments we could learn how to play.
Next we went outside to the PE yard to rehearse our sea shanties. My team knows our shanties by heart. We also have some great dance moves! Everyone did a great job learning their songs. Miss Cantillon announced the Secret Student. It was Enissa! Finally we packed up and went home.
Hello, my name is Justin S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter for today October 24, 2006. The first thing we did this morning was paste our important person poem to a black paper and turned it in.
Next we had Spanish class. We had a review for the quiz tomorrow. The topic was verbs. We highlighted the verbs in a Spanish story for practice. D.E.A.R. was our next subject. I read the book, The Kid Who became President. The class usually reads for 20 minutes during D.E.A.R.
Next we continued watching the movie, “Holes”. It was a great part when Magnet stole the sunflower seeds form Mr. Sir’s truck.
After that, we worked in vocabulary units 1 through 3 review in pairs. I worked with my 11:00 partner, Sammy, for 25 minutes until time for recess. Next we read our important person poems.
We finished about one half of the class’s poems. I got to read mine which was about George Washington. Some people turned in pumpkins that looked like the people they did their reports on. It was fun to see all the creative ideas.
Math was next, first we practiced 2-minute math. We checked our homework from last night and then reviewed lesson two, on subtracting whole numbers. After lunch we had an Art lesson which involved cutting and pasting fall leaves to a black sheet of paper.
Science was next; we turned in our homework, and reviewed for tomorrow’s quiz on Chapter 2 lesson 1. This lesson covered the five kingdoms their characteristics and examples.
In writing class we started typing our five paragraph essay on the four most important things that have happened to us so far. Today we worked on the introduction. Last we had library. We worked in pairs on the computer to find answers to the questions handed out by Mrs. Zipp, our teacher. Finally we packed up and went home.
Today we got to finish the movie Holes .We also got to sing sea shanties such as Drunken Sailor, and John Kanaka. We do math speed drills every day (80 multiplication/division problems) with two minutes to do them. So far two people got all 80 problems on their multiplication speed drill. And one person got all 80 problems on the division speed drill. I got 43.
In science we have a different teacher, Mr. Jeanson (the sixth grade teacher). Almost everyday we have DEAR. I’m reading the book, The Forest of Silence. I don’t know much about it because I’m just in the beginning. Tomorrow we are going to the Star of India for an overnight field trip.
It is 6:00 clock in the morning we have to get up and wash the deck on the Star of India. That is a ship. It is really tough getting all the trash off the deck. The only thing we have is water, buckets and brooms. There also was a group that had to clean the heads. In case you don't know what the head is, it is the bathroom. It was probably the worst job ever out of the whole program. It was still fun.
The food we had was very diferent for me at least. It was smudge. I think it was really oatmeal and cran-tangerine juice. The thing was the oatmeal tasted really different to me. Almost twenty five percent of the class probably loaded there oatmeal with sugar. Some people did not like it and one of those people was me.

The best part was rat hunting. You get pulled in to a little hole and it is really dark and scary. Some people would want to quit before they even got half of their body in. No one found any but it was still amazing going in the hole and looking for rats.The other fun part was hoisting the barrel. You got to move the barrel that weighed 100 hundred pounds but there was a lot of people so it did not feel that heavy. It was the best field trip ever.
First, we wrote in our Euterpe logs. Then we shared the logs we wrote in. I shared mine.Miss Cantillon said "Cross out the word Thing." I thought it was a good idea. Following was an announcement that I was the Star Citizen. We had religion next. We made a flow chart. After that was Science. I learned about backbones. We made backbones out of noodles, lifesavers and pipe cleaners. We had Vocab next. I love Vocab! We worked on units 1 to 3. Next was recess. I was walking around a guest named Madison. She seemed nice. She might come to our school. After recess we had music. We were working on our keyboards. I had some trouble with it. Music was over at 11:00, then we had spelling. Miss Cantillion gave us a pre-pre test. What is a pre-pre test? There is a pre-test for weekly spelling activities and a pre-test given in class. Miss Cantillon calls the one given in class a pre-pre test so nobody gets confused. Afterwards was lunch. I played fooseball. Once that was done we had D.E.A.R.. Following that was reading. We got our new novels we will start reading called A Year Down Yonder. We wrote what we thought it would be about. Next up was Math. I thought the lesson was easy. It was problem solving. Then it was Social Studies. We recorded our sea shanties and watched a movie about mapping. I thought it was interesting. Our secret student was not announced today. I got into school and every one asked me, “What are you for Halloween?” I said, “I’m being a luchador!” We started our day with Spanish. We picked a word and we said it in different ways in Spanish.
Then we had D.E.A.R. We read for 25 minutes. Then we had Reading for a bit of time. We read some of the book A Year Down Yonder but I never got a chance to read out loud.
After that we had recess. We now play kickball. It’s fun. I kicked a home run and got a double play. We got extra recess.
Once we got in from recess we went over to the jr. yard. That’s were the little kids have school. We went over to play with our first grade buddies. I brought a pumpkin so she colored it then we had juice and snacks. After that we got to play with them I played kickball and she wanted to play jump rope.
We had lunch, played kickball then went back into class. Once we got into class Miss Cantillon told us we had to get glue, pencils, and scissors. We were going to art. I did two activities in art I did a little hunted house with an owl and a tree, and I did a little pumpkin project.
Later on we had Science with Mr. Jeanson. We went over our vocabulary. He assigned us homework that is supposed to be done on Friday.
Last we had library. We read A Picnic at Mudstock Meadows . Then I took an A.R. test on it. (I got 100) That’s what we did for Tuesday.
Today was a very exciting day because we celebrated All Saints Day. We celebrated this feast day by having each student dress up as a saint they have researched. All Saints Day is a holy day of obligation so all the classes went to a school a school mass which began at 10:00 a.m. After mass we had a parade around the block and a school assembly. Mrs.Lowell, our principal, asked for a few students from each class to share a few sentences about their saints. My teacher, Miss Cantillon, chose me, Manci, and Sammy to represent our class. I’m proud to report that everyone did a great job in speaking clearly and we were all very informative. All the students participated somehow in this in event and Mrs. Lowell, rewarded all the classes with fifteen extra minutes. It was starting to get warm, so everyone was glad to take off their saints' costumes before lunch.
We had science class and our teacher Mr.Jeanson. He is very funny teacher but today he was irritated that some of the students were talking and not listening. He was only angry for a few minutes. We had P.E. after science class and that was great fun because we got to play capture the flag. Capture the flag is sort of like flag football but we play it differently. This is how it’s played: First, there are two teams, red and yellow and every team member has a flag with their team members. I was on the red team today. When you are in the yellow territory, a yellow team member can pull your flag. When a yellow team member is on the red team a red member can pull your flag. When your flag is pulled you go to jail which is located on the sidelines. The winning team was the red team, but there was a lot of discussion from the yellow team saying, “The yellow team should have won.” Mr.Jeanson took over from Miss Cantillon prior to us going to computer class. I really like computer class as the assignments are super interesting and are not boring. In computer class we are finishing our Saint Biography cards and done a lot of research to find out chosen saint was born, died, canonized, and what they did during their life.
That was the fifth grade class for today, Wednesday, November 1. Everyone was very happy to dress up, celebrate a school mass, walk in a procession, and have a school assembly. Hi, it’s Collin again and I’m today’s reporter.
We started off our morning with our usual jobs (I do our calendar) and journal entries. We write a half page long entry in our journals every day to help us get better at writing. But, today also was the beginning of the school book fair so we spent some time there. The book fair comes to our school twice a year. It has fun books, games, and contests. I entered my vote in for how many fruit candies were in the jar. This book fair was jungle themed. After school started, we shared some saint reports with the class. The whole school’s been working on saint reports this month. Next it was time for my favorite subject, math! We did a speed drill which is when we get 80 multiplication or division problems and do as many as possible in two minuets. Next, we worked on our vocabulary plays. Since we did a review chapter this week, everyone had to use 15 words in their plays. After that, we went to recess.
After recess, we worked on and corrected our spelling for this week. Every week we get 20 spelling words, 5 challenge words, and if you get 100% on the pretest; you get 10 super challenge words which are very hard. Then we played 24 but we played a new version. Today we played with our tables. A person from each table gets a whiteboard. Then it’s just like regular 24 except you work together with your tables, write the answer on the white board, and be the first table to say it correctly. Next, we went to lunch.
After lunch we played a round of the old, play by yourself, 24. I like it a bit better than the new version. Next, we had D.E.A.R (drop everything and read) for 20 minuets. After that we went over our reading homework that was to write 4 questions about A Year Down Yonder. It’s the book we’re reading in class. I think it is going to be a very interesting book and I look forward to reading it. Then, we finished watching a video about maps and globes (we started it yesterday). We did a sheet on what we learned in the movie later but, first we had computer. In computer we worked on finishing our saint biography cards (part of our saint report but, only 5th grade does these) and if you were done with that you could work on typing your autobiography. I can’t wait to see the finished copy of mine! Then we had 10 more minutes to work on our vocabulary plays while some of us were recording our group podcast. I’m not in it this time. Until the end of the day we worked on our map sheet that I was talking about. Today some people went to Writer’s Workshop that we have on Thursdays.
Hi, I am Tyler in school today we had to do our morning work. Then we had an assembly. I did not get student of the month but Kathleen J., Justin and Juliana got it. We also heard who our A.R. winners were. Our school A.R. average is up to 83%! After student of the month we went back into our classroom. It was time for computer class. We were going to finish up our autobiographies.
Afterwards we went back in to our class and it was time for recess. We played soccer it was fun, even though the other team won. Once that was done, we went back into our classroom, then we had are vocabulary test. But we did not finish our test because we had PE.
Next, we got to play capture the flag. I scored the first point on my team. Then Pablo and I scored the next point. But the other team won. Then PE was over and we went back into our classroom.
Then, we finished up our test. Finally we finished our test and it was time to go home because it was a half day today. So we packed up to go home. Makena was Star Citizen and she also won our weekly raffle.
School started about 8:15. First we had to unpack and then we had to write in our journals about empathy which is our virtue of the month. Once that was done we went into the A.R. rewards and a drawing for a free book. The winner was Sammy. He is also a top reader but Yamin is the top reader of the class.
Quickly after that we had to start with the other saint posters we had not gone over. We had to write notes for the posters that my classmates and I made because we are going to have a test on the saints. We had to go into science where we had a test about vertebrates. I got a good grade on it.
Once science was finished we had to finish one more poster. Following quickly afterwards we talked about unit four for vocabulary. It took about 30 minutes and we went out for recess. During recess I went to the bookfair. But during recess which I didn’t know was happening the class was doing a lining up drill. Then recess was over we went to the classroom.
We went into the classroom to get are music books then headed to the science lab where we had the pianos set up. We were practicing two songs that we learned earlier in the year. Music was about 30 minutes and we went back into the classroom.
We went inside and had a spelling pre pre test which is a test that gets us ready for the real one but is not graded. After that we worked in our spelling books were we worked on completing activities. Finally it was lunch.
We didn’t do a drill again we could go to the bookfair. At 12:15 we went back inside and did a section of D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read). Soon we read a little bit of A Year Down Yonder. Finally we got a two minute coffee break which is when you can walk around and relax. Then we went into math.
During math we checked are homework. Then we went into subtracting decimals. Afterwards we had "Let's Make a Deal" which is a game where you can earn candy! We took about ten minutes on the game then went into social studies.
Hello, I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, after we unpacked, we worked on our portfolios for the parent teacher conferences next week. We then had Spanish. During Spanish, we had a quiz and did some review verb exercises. I think I did well on the quiz. Next, we had DEAR as you probably know stands for Drop Everything And Read. The class is reading a book called A Year Down Yonder. We also talked about the Great Depression and listened to some radio broadcasts from back then. I think the jokes were boring. After that, we had recess.
When we got back from recess, we watched a grammar video on parts of speech and then discussed our notes with our tables. Next we had math. First, we had a math division speed drill. Then, we checked our homework (I got 100%) and learned how to solve word problems backwards. At last we had lunch!
We got back from lunch and went straight to art class. There we made leaf prints and we’ll get to see how they turned out next Tuesday. Next we had Science class where we discussed how to do an experiment for homework. After that, we had library (we were having a Book Fair and it was the last day) and writing. In library some people got some neat books from the Scholastic Book Fair. In writing, we edited our five paragraph essays so we could finally start typing our last drafts on Thursday. Finally we went home!

Hi! I’m Ryan H. and I’m today’s reporter.
Right now it’s time for our morning work (8:30 a.m.), like our morning journal, putting papers in our portfolios, or Mastery Challenge. After doing that for a while, at about 9:00 a.m. we start our Religion flow charts. I’m finally finished. (9:39 a.m.) Now we have a math multiplication speed drill. Huh. Cool…I got the same grade as yesterday.
Now we are correcting our homework. I didn’t do so well. And now we are having a student teacher for hard questions. She is pretty good. Ooh. Here is another one. I’m not really getting what she means.
YES! Now we have recess. (10:50 a.m.) O.K., (panting) that was fun. Now we have our spelling test. INTERRUPTION: REPORT CARDS. I got some good grades .Back to the spelling test. I wonder how I did?! 24!
Time to go outside. (Game). LUNCH RECESS! (Play). Now we get to reading - D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read). I am reading Night at the Museum. I only have 20 more pages left…so far it’s been really funny. Oh, time’s up - time to move on to the next subject. After that we make grids of our room. That was hard. Now onto computer (editing). I am already done with my autobiography so I can do Type To Learn or Mac Mavis.

Hi, I am Kathleen J. I am here to report about what happened in class today, Monday, November 13, 2006. The first thing we did was complete a sheet for our Parent- Teacher- Student conference called “Student Self Evaluation.” “Do you know what a Parent-Teacher-Student conference is?” Well, it is when your parents and teachers have a meeting with you and talk about your goals for this year and strengths and weaknesses you have. Some people shared what they wrote on their sheet but I did not.
Afterwards, we opened up our new school store which is where you can buy items like pencils, picture frames and posters with your scholar dollars or tickets. I bought a poster that said Dream Big with a chocolate labrador retriever on it. I paid ten scholar dollars for it.
Once we were done with that, we had science with Mr. Jeanson. We first learned the difference between a vascular and a nonvascular plant. We also reviewed for a quiz that we are going to have on Friday. It will be about what the parts of the tree trunk are called and about vascular and nonvascular plants. We then checked our homework which was to write two definitions for the vocabulary words in the lesson. Once we were finished with science, we moved on to vocabulary.
We had to work with our 11 o’clock partners and work on Completing the Sentences in our book. Following that was recess. I played dodge ball with my friends. Sadly, the bell rang and we had to go back inside.
Next, we had to go into the science lab and have music. We selected our song for the Christmas recital. We selected the song “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!” When that was over, we moved onto spelling. We had to take our Chapter 3 spelling pre-pre test.
After, we talked about an assignment that we have to do in class. It is called Teaching the Teacher. In this assignment, we have to report about something that we are really good at and we have to teach our classmates and our teacher on how to do it step by step. At 11:45 we went out to lunch. I played soccer tennis. Then, the bell rang and we went back inside. After that, we had D.E.A.R which means “Drop Everything And Read.’’ I read a book called A Year Down Yonder. Once we were finished, we moved on to literature. We read aloud a couple of pages from the book A Year Down Yonder. Then, we moved onto math. First, we did a 2 minute multiplication speed drill. I got a 79 out of 80 correct. In math, we learned about equations and expressions. We learned a new mnemonic to help us remember how to solve an equation with parentheses. The mnemonic was PEMDAS (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally). PEMDAS stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. We did a couple problems in our book and moved on to social studies. In social studies, we continued working on the map of our room. I finished my map and I think I did very well on it. Then we moved on to Study Skills.
In Study Skills we learned about keeping ourselves organized. We had to complete a survey about what we need to work on in study skills and we had to check off what we usually do, sometimes do or rarely do. Finally, we wrote down our homework for the week and packed up and went home. As I was leaving school, I said to my friends, “Goodbye and see you tomorrow.”

Hello, I’m Juliana, and I’m today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! This morning, after we unpacked we started a Christmas letter to the marines. Miss Cantillon told us this was our rough draft because we were going to work on our final copy later on that day. Some topics were weather, sports, school, and what it is like in San Diego. Starting and sending a Christmas letter sounded weird to us because it wasn’t even close to Christmas. But then Miss Cantillon told us it would take a long time to get there. We then understood.
After our morning work we started off with Spanish. Our homework was to write a story in Spanish that was at least ten sentences. Ms. Perla called your name alphabetically if you weren’t absent and she would see if you had your homework. If you wanted to you could’ve read it to the class. Two people I remember reading to the class were Yasmin and Abby. Their stories were great! We also did a little exercise. Ms. Perla wrote some words in Spanish and English on the board and we copied them in our notebook. We had to match the English words with the Spanish words that mean the same. Once we were done we switched notebooks with another person that was done and we checked them.
Next we had reading. We started reading by having DEAR as you know means drop everything and read. It lasted for twenty minutes. Following we read about Richard Peck who is the author of A Year Down Yonder. We took some important notes. It was very interesting. Did you know he was a school teacher?
Then instead of vocabulary we talked about how spreading rumors can hurt people’s feelings and end friendships. We learned that if someone comes up to you and asks you if a certain person is talking about them, you should say no. Also don’t try to actually spread the rumor. That wouldn’t help. We also did a little role play with Makena and Manci to help us understand more. Once that was done we had recess. We got ten extra minutes also for if we needed to take an accelerated reader quiz.
After recess we had grammar. We got into six groups. Each group got a piece of construction paper, a title, and a magazine. The titles were a piece of paper that had different names of different types of nouns. Each group got a different type of noun. You were to tape the title to the piece of construction paper and put each of your group member’s names on it. Then you had to go through your magazine and look for pictures that relate to your type of noun. You cut out the pictures and glue them on. Miss Cantillon put them on the board and showed them to the class.
During math time we checked our math homework and went over any questions that some one didn’t get. One of the questions we needed two people to come up and explain. Those people were Kathleen J. and Yasmin. Great job Kathleen and Yasmin!
Afterward we had pizza lunch so we got to leave to the parish hall five minutes early.
In art class we did a very fun art project with water colors. We learned some techniques with water colors too. We got to paint leaves and use them kind of as a stamp and we also put the leaf on a kind of construction paper and dabbed around it with your brush. I think that Mrs. McGary taught us that mistakes happen and it’s okay.
When that was over we finished our Christmas letter to the marines. First we made a final draft of our letter and showed it to Miss Cantillon. Then when Miss Cantillon thought it was okay she stapled your letter to a piece of construction paper. Next you fold it and decorate the front. I thought everyone’s looked amazing!
Once we finished, numbers 11-20 which is half of the class went downstairs to library. Mrs. Zipp called everyone by name to come in and sit at a table. We discussed how you know if a book is fiction or nonfiction. We also did a worksheet that related to that. Once we finished our worksheet we were to put it in the basket and go browse for books. I think most of the people in our class were getting books for their buddies for buddy reading on Friday.
When we got upstairs we went straight to the computer room to finish typing our final copy of our autobiographies. That was a lot of work.
At 2:40 we had twenty minutes free time to catch up on some work or do some activities such as spelling. I think I got a lot done in that twenty minutes.
Finally we put away our things, packed up, did our jobs, and put up our chairs up. Miss Cantillon announced secret student. It was Ryan H.! Congratulations Ryan! That is the Cantillon Chronicle for today.
Hello, my name is Makena M. I am today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. Today is a half-day because it is parent-teacher conferences. But I am here to tell you what we did today in class. So, the first thing we did today was spanish. We had to do a worksheet which was easy.
Once we where done with that we had DEAR which stands for drop everything and read. We read for 30 min. I read A Year Down Yonder. Now we are translating into reading. We were learning about figurative language. After that we had vocabulary with our 3 o’clock partners. Mine was Kathleen D. We were completing the sentences. Next, we had recess. I played soccer. The following thing we did was practice how we will be for our parent teacher conferences.
At 11:15 we moved onto math. We did a division speed drill. I thought I did okay. In class we learned a little bit of algebra. Afterwards, we had religon and we finished our flow charts. At the end of the day, she could not announce secret student, how sad. That was the today’s Cantillon Chronicle report.
In the morning the class worked in our cursive book, pages 12-14.
This week we all have to read pages 75-93 our book called A Year Down Yonder. After writing class it’s time for our religion test. I thought I did pretty well.
Then we had math. After math we had vocabulary to work on our little activities. Then we had recess, and I played truth or dare.
Also at recess I helped Justin with his autobiography. When we came back to the classroom and Miss Cantillon said we could
Play 24. I moved 2 tables up, now I have to deal with really good players. Then it was time for grammar, that was fun.
Then lunch. I was starving. After lunch, which seemed pretty short was DEAR= Drop Everything And Read. In reading I was way, way, way behind on pages. Then came social studies, which was pretty boring. Then it was finally time for COMPUTER. I was dying for my BEAUTIFUL computer.

Hi! My name is Enissa R. and I’m here to talk to you about my day in the fifth grade class at Stella Maris Academy. First we started religion when the bell rang. Next, our class had science with Mr. Jeanson. In science we’re working on reviewing the big science test we have on Wednesday. It’s worth ½ of our grade, so we all better study. After that we had vocabulary scripts. My partners were Jason and Sammy. I think they’re really funny and always make me laugh.
Once that was done we moved on to recess, yah! Finally we had D.E.A.R. reading. I want to tell you about something that relates to reading. It’s called the literature blog. The blog is this new thing on Miss Cantillon’s website. First you will see this thing that shows you a picture then at the bottom it will say comments. Click on that and it will have a form that you have to put your first name and last initial then you type your comment in. Following we had math. In math we were talking about inverse operations. Inverse operations are the opposite of whatever operation you’re performing (e.g., adding or subtracting.)
“Hello,” my name is Jason S. and I will be your reporter today. The first thing we did today was that we worked on place cards for Thanksgiving. Then we had Spanish, we did two activities. We had D.E.A.R afterwards for 25 minutes. Once we were done with that we worked in our reading work books. Once we finished we gave our vocabulary skits. Next was math we had a multiplication speed drill for two minutes. Then we checked our math homework. I got a 100% yea! After all that we went to art, we are drawing animals. In science today we played jeopardy for 45 minutes. It was loads of fun. We are worked on maps in social studies today and I am very good in this area because I enjoy it. After social studies we went to the Honor Roll Assembly. A lot of people in our class made Honor Roll this time. Congratulations to them all. After the Honor Roll Assembly we packed up and went home.
Today in our morning work, we started writing rough drafts of letters to Mrs. Lowell (Our principal) for Principal Appreciation Day. Our teacher wrote the directions on the board. At recess there was a birthday and we got donuts. By accident I brought my tennis racquet because I thought the “Teach the Teacher” report was due.
Hello, my name is Justin S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today. First, we all started writing letters to Mrs. Lowall for Principal Appreciation Day. That lasted from 8:00-8:30. Our second class was Spanish. We checked our homework and she handed out more homework due next Tuesday.
Next we had D.E.A.R. I read a book called A Year Down Yonder. Then we discussed the themes of A Year Down Yonder with the class. Next, we worked in our vocabulary books drawing illustrations of our words. After that, we played at recess; I played 3 flags up with my friends.
Next, we checked our homework from last night together and went over the next lesson in our book. After that we went to the hall for pizza hot lunch. After lunch our teacher, Mr. Jeanson came and we worked together on a science project that involved dissecting plants. We were looking at all the parts of the plants main systems. He handed out our homework assignments for the next day.
Our next class was on writing. We worked on our Teach the Teacher Power Point Presentation in the computer lab. My report was on How to Clean a Fish Tank. Our next class was Library. We took a pop quiz on the numbering system for ordering library books. After we got back to class we packed up and went home.
We did Spanish today. I went to recess and played three flags up. After recess we played spelling tic-tac-toe. I lost and won one. You have to spell a word right to take your turn. Some are hard some are easy. After we did a speed drill, and checked our homework and went to lunch. After I took a science test. Then we went to PE and played soccer. I lost, but it was just a game. We did S.S and then we went and sang songs with our first grade buddies. That is what we did.
We are writing letters for our principal because it was Principal Appreciation Day. We also are going to sing two songs for our principal. I hope she likes it because we worked hard on it. I think they sound pretty good. The fifth grade students are also makings letters for our principal. I wrote one of them.
We also got three postcards today. They were from Maine, Kansas and Canada. I can't believe we got one from Canada. I was really surprised about that because I thought they would not come from out of the country. The three places wrote a lot about their states and cities especially Canada. There are a lot of things I never knew about Maine, Kansas or Canada.
Today we had two birthdays. One person brought brownies. The other birthday person is going to bring something tomorrow. I hear they are bringing brownies, too. I wonder why they wouldn't bring them on the same day. I guess that would be a little too much sweets during school.
Today almost everybody finished the book A Year Down Yonder. I think the book was OK. The great thing was that everybody passed a reading quiz on the book so we get a little ice cream party. I can't wait for it!
We started our day out with a little student of the month in the junior yard. To my surprise Kathleen D and I got STUDENT OF THE MONTH!!! WOO, WOO! What a nice surprise. After that we had principal appreciation in the junior yard right after that. All of the classes had a little gift or song or anything special for Mrs. Lowell (we did it in front of the whole school.) Our class and the first graders made up a little song for her.
Next we went back to the senior yard and we had computers with Mr. Martin. We worked on a new project. We had to do a power point on a national park. I picked Carlsbad Caverns because I’ve been there.
After that we had recess. I played backwards basketball with Manci, Kathleen, Julie, Makena and Yasmin. You turn around backwards and try you make a hoop.
Then we had P.E. With Mr. Guay. We played soccer. Personally soccer is not my favorite sport but we had to ply it. we have assigned teams my team is Yasmin, Talon, Pablo and I.
Next we went over to the junior yard and to read to our first grade buddy. Our first grade buddies are first graders that got assigned to us. I like my buddy but she can get a bit crazy! I read A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech to her. She said that she liked the book. So I let her do an AR test on it. AR stands for accelerated reader it is when you take a test on a book that you read and see how good you do. The teacher sets goals for you and if you reach those goals you get a little reading award. The people that have like 30 to 200 points are announced at student of the month. She did a very good job she only got one wrong out of the whole thing. Then we were out of time and it was time to go home. The reading award went to Tyler and Jason. The star citizen (it’s the star of the week) was Ryan. Lucky for us we got a short day, we got out at 12:30. Short days are always good days.
At the beginning of the day, instead of the usual morning work (projects and journal entries) we had D.E.A.R. because we weren’t going to have time to have D.E.A.R. later. Once class started, our first subject was Spanish. We had a test on the Spanish articles. I hope that everyone studied. We also had a worksheet on “to see, to be, and to have”. Once Spanish was over, we got in our groups and started working on our game boards. In class we are now working on groups to make a game related to A Year Down Yonder. It’s the book we just finished reading in class. I can’t wait to see what they look like when they’re done.
Next we all went to the church to have the sacrament of reconciliation. This is the sacrament in which we confess our sins and are forgiven by Christ. We waited for a while for everyone to go and I was one of the last ones to go but it was worth it. After that we went to recess. My friends and I played ping-pong and I had a great time.
After recess, the class practiced our parts for the mass. Every class puts on a mass at some point in the year and now it’s our turn. I have one of the biggest parts in the mass so I want to practice extra hard. I also get to dress up as St. Patrick so I’m very exited. We are also celebrating the Immaculate Conception. Next we shared some more of our “Teach the Teacher” projects. These are projects where we make a power point presentation on how to do something we like. I did how to drive a golf ball. Today I really liked Sammy’s. He did how to wrap a present. He brought in all the stuff to wrap a box and he did. At the end of his report, he told us there was something inside and he chose Manci to open it. It was a noise maker and he let her have it for the day. After that we went to lunch. I was glad because it was pizza lunch today and I love pizza.
Right after lunch we had art. Today we painted poinsettia and mine turned out really nice. I can’t wait until next week when we take them home. When art was done, we had science. This is one of my favorite classes. We finished our chapter and had a test today. Now we are learning about how nutrients are naturally recycled. I think it is very interesting. Then when that was over we went to the church to practice mass again. This time our 1st grade buddies came to watch. Every 5th grader has a partner in 1st grade that we do different activities with. Then, until school ended, we finished our teach the teacher reports.
Hi, I’m Tyler the first thing we did in school are journal entries about Advent. After that, we had Spanish, and it was OK. We also had a quiz, it was pretty easy and I only got one wrong. Afterwards it was time for recess and Lance said, “Can I have the ball now?” I said, “Yes.” We played three flags up it was an OK game. Right when I was about to catch the ball and be thrower, the bell rang and we had to go inside.
Next, we were talking about the Nutcracker because we are going to go to it tomorrow and a girl named Yasmin who is in our class is going to be in it.
Then it was time for our MATH TEST! Then we had lunch then we left off at our game, 3 flags up and I was thrower and that is what we did for lunch recess. After we had a Science quiz and I thought I did well on it.
We had PE and we played soccer, my team lost. Finally, we went back inside and we were working on our A Year Down Yonder board games. Then we went home and that was my day today.
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, we unpacked and did our morning work. Soon, we had our science vocabulary quiz. I got 100%! We next ate a quick snack and then went to practice for our mass that morning. The choir director, Mr. Amador, got there at the last minute right when the priest was going to come in! When we got back from our mass, Mr. Guay came to take us to P.E. We had free-time. Some boys even tried to beat Mr. Guay at ping-pong. When we came back in, we did a quick math class and then worked on our game boards for the A Year Down Yonder test. We finally went to Buddy Reading ( I read The Polar Express to my buddy.) Hi, my name is Ryan, and I will be your reporter today! Right now we have Spanish bingo. I won the first time but not the second time. (45 minutes later). O.K., now we have reading. Our group is almost done with our game board. “Your game board looks cool,” said Talon. “I think it’s pretty good myself,” I replied. All we have to do is outline and color.
After that we have vocabulary scripts. I’m working with Westin. Ours is about stealing (it’s fake). Oh, yeah! Time for recess!
Wow all that ping-pong was tiring (panting). O.K. now we get to settle down and read. The book I’m reading is called 26 Fairmount Avenue by Tomie Depaola. I like his books a lot, this book is actually a Newbery Honor book. Done with reading and on to math. We are starting off with a speed drill. And now we start our homework. I finished in class. Now we have recess (boy, I’m hungry). Art time! The art teacher said my panda was one of the best in the class. Science time! That was long. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 ,5 ,4 ,3 2, 1,…SCHOOL’S OUT!!!!<(^_^)>!!!! Hi, I am Kathleen J. I am here to report about what happened in class today, Wednesday, December 13, 2006. The first thing we did today was write a rough draft of our Christmas letter to Sister Mary, our former principal. Our letter has to be at least 3 paragraphs.
Afterwards, our Spanish teacher, Senora Perla, came in for Spanish class. We had to do a vocabulary review that was 4 pages long but she helped us on 2 of the sheets because we did not know the answers for the questions. When we finished our sheets, we had to give our paper to somebody else so we can check their paper and grade it. I got 100% on the vocabulary review.
Once we were finished with Spanish class, we worked on the game board we have been doing in class. The game board we are creating has to be based on the book we just finished in class, A Year Down Yonder. My group worked on coloring the game board, making new cards for our game, cutting out the character figures and playing the game for just a few minutes. Our game board has Day Cards, Carleen Cards (a character in A Year Down Yonder), Question Cards, an answer booklet, a rule booklet, character figures and critters (which are money in our game). We worked for about 45 minutes.
When that was over, it was time for us to go out for recess. During recess I shot hoops backwards with my friends. I made a shot backwards from the 3-point line and it went straight in. It was really fun! Sadly, the bell rang and we had to go inside.
Once we got into the classroom, we worked on our vocabulary scripts with our 3 o’clock partner. Our vocabulary script has to include 12 words from Unit 5. The vocabulary script my partner and I are writing is about 3 kids having a fray or fight and got in trouble with the teacher. Unfortunately, we were not able to finish our script so we have to finish it tonight.
Following vocabulary, we went on to math and first did a 2 minute division speed drill. I got 72 out of 80 division problems. When we finished our speed drill, we checked our homework from last night. Our homework was about multiplying a number by a 1 digit number. I got ½ wrong on my homework but I still got a good grade. Before we went to the parish hall for our Christmas party, Miss Cantillon said, “Say please and thank you and be very polite to the parents who are going to be there.”
At our Christmas luncheon party, we had Honey Baked ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetables and fruit. It was delicious!! When we were all finished with our lunch we had our gift exchange with our secret Santa. As you all know, a secret Santa is when we pick a name from a hat or box and whoever name you pick is the person you will get a gift for and you do not tell anybody. We were only allowed to buy a gift under $10.00. I gave my secret Santa, Kathleen D., a jacket and a ski hat. I got a gift certificate for any Westfield shopping mall for $15.00. I really liked my gift!! Then we had to go back to the classroom around 12:15.
At around 12:15, our science teacher, Mr. Jeanson, came into our classroom and we had science class. Today we took a quiz on the lesson about the nitrogen cycle, nitrates and ammonia. I thought the front part of the quiz was quite simple but the back side of the quiz was just a little bit harder. When we all finished our quiz we checked it over. Fortunately, I got a 95% on my quiz. I only got ½ wrong.
Next, we had P.E. We played soccer. I am on the white team and I played the yellow team. I have Jason, Lance, Manci and Collin on my team but Collin could not play because he hurt his knee during the weekend. Towards the beginning of the game we only scored 1 goal but towards the end of the game we scored 3 more goals. Also towards the end of the game our P.E. teacher, Mr. Guay, was goalie on the other team because some of the people from the other team had to go to our science teacher,
Mr. Jeanson. Mr Jeanson called them because they did not turn in a homework assignment. Luckily, I scored 1 goal against Mr. Guay. When the game was over we lost to the yellow team by 1 goal.
After P.E. our teacher gave us ten extra minutes to play outside because we did not have recess at lunch. During that time I just talked with my friends and kicked the soccer ball a little bit. Then when we were finished with P.E., we watched a video on explorers because after our Christmas break we are going to start working on an explorer report.
We have to do a Powerpoint presentation on one explorer. I personally thought the explorer video was quite interesting. I still do not know what explorer I want to do for my report. Once Social Studies ended we practiced our song for our Christmas pageant tomorrow. We are singing a song called “Angels We Have Heard On High” and I think we really sang well. We also have to wear halos out of garland tomorrow when we perform our song to the whole school and to our parents.
At the last 15 minutes of school we had D.E.A.R which stands for Drop Everything And Read. I am reading a book called The End by Lemony Snicket. I think this book is very interesting and I am really enjoying reading it.
Finally, our teacher announced the secret student for today and that was Justin! Great Job!
It has been a very busy day and it was time to pack up and go home.

Hi, my name is Juliana L.and I am today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! We started our day off by writing Christmas letters to Sister Mary. In our letters we wrote about advent, what we were doing in school, and wishes for a great Christmas.
Then we made and decorated our Christmas trees. First we put the lights on evenly. Next we stuck the garland on covering every part of the tree. Some kids didn’t have enough garland for their tree, like me, so we borrowed some from people that had extra. Everyone’s turned out fantastic!
After that we had recess and then had our vocabulary scripts. That was our test this week instead of a written out one. We had to use twelve words!
Following that we got in our game board groups for A Year Down Yonder and did a worksheet together. Then three groups prepared their game boards because we were going to play them after lunch which came next.
When we came back into the classroom we played our game boards that we made. Each game had a host from each group who hosted their game. It was so much fun. Everyone did a great job.
Once that was done we went to the parish hall to do our Christmas pageant. Each class from K-8 sang and then they had a play about Christmas. Our song was "Angels We Have Heard on High" or some people know it as Gloria.
Afterwards we went back to our classes and cleaned up a little bit. Finally we packed up and went home.
Hello, my name is Makena M. and I will be telling you what we did in class today. The first thing we did was a Christmas Carol puzzle. Then at 8:45 a.m we had science and we did our Graphic Organizer. We also read our science books. Once that was done we got to play our board games. My group was Surviving a Year Down Yonder. That was a lot of fun and I know we will play again. When we finished, we had computers and we watched a movie about computers. At 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. we played with our buddies (mine was Maria). We played Down by the Bank with Juliana and Kathleen J. and their buddies. We all had a lot of fun. The next class was P.E. and we played soccer. I was apart of the blue team and Mr. Guay was on it with us. After we played soccer we played our board games again. Finally, Miss Cantillon said, “the secret student is Abby”. She will announce Star Citizen on Monday when we come back from Christmas vacation. That was today’s Cantillon Chronicle report.
Hi, I’m Pablo O. I am today’s chronicle reporter.
Today is a whole new year; it is the year of 2007. New Year’s Day was just yesterday. In the morning there was a brand new student, her name is Madison. Her old school was All Hallows. It is very good to have another person in our class, now we are 20 students.
In the morning we had to write our New Year’s resolution for the year 2007. One of mine is to do better at school, especially in Vocabulary and Social Studies. Then we had Spanish class and wrote down some definitions. I got 100 on my last Spanish test.
After Spanish we told the class about our Christmas vacation. Once that was done we had DEAR, which means Drop Everything and Read; but I didn’t get to read anything because the next book of the series I’m reading wasn’t available. It’s a series about a 14 year old boy that is a spy named Alex Rider, and the book that I need is called Skeleton Key.
Afterwards we had Vocabulary. We looked at definitions and drew pictures of what they meant in the book. One of the definitions is Vagabond, it can be used as a noun or as an adjective, and the noun means an idle wanderer or a tramp, the adjective means wandering, irresponsible. Since we didn’t have much time in Vocabulary, we were only able to do one thing.
Once that was done we had Recess for fifteen minutes and we played ping-pong for a while, we got bored and started playing 4-square. We had a lot of fun playing it. When recess sadly ended we got 15 minutes extra of our recess and continued to play 4-square.
When that finished we took our Spelling pre-pre test. The words weren’t that hard but frankly I wasn’t familiar with them. Math followed and we played a math game called 24. It is about adding, multiplying, subtracting or dividing four numbers to get 24. Unfortunately I had to move down one level because I lost. After the game we had to review our Homework and what the chapter was about.
Once we finished we went to lunch. I had a sandwich, mandarins, apple sauce and nuts. We played 4-square again and had a lot of fun. My favorite part of the game is when somebody yells “earthquake” and bounces the ball really hard in the center and we try to hit the ball to another square, so the person in that square is out.
At 12:15 we had Art. We were making sculptures of animals or mythical creatures. Since we aren’t aloud to carve wood we made it out of tinfoil. Our art teacher is called Mrs. McGarry. It is really fun having her as an art teacher because she gives us tips about art and gives us fun art projects.
Science was next and Mr. Jeanson came in. We read the last four pages of the chapter. Mr. Jeanson called different people to read it. He asked us questions. We are studying about vascular and nonvascular plants for the quiz, which is going to be kind of complicated and I hope to get it right.
The class is divided in two for Library and I went in the second half. While the other half of the class was in Library we were in Writing class. There we started writing our 5 paragraph essay; we wrote the introduction and the closing paragraphs. My essay is about going to Knotts Berry Farm for my birthday. Finally our half of the class went to Library. Mrs. Zip read us a book called Thank you Mr. Falter; it is about a young girl that doesn’t know how to read and she gets teased at school by other children, but then Mr. Falter was the new teacher and taught her how to read. When she grew up she became a children’s book writer. I checked out a book in the library about fairy tales.
When the day ended we wrote down our homework in our Homework Journal for tomorrow. We have Math, Science and Vocabulary, and 2o minutes reading. We packed our things and walked to the Junior Yard were our parents pick us up. Well, now I have swimming practice, until next time, goodbye.
Hi! I’m Manci. Today was the second day back to school from Winter Break! In school, we wrote in our morning journals from 8:10-8:20 a.m. Everyone either wrote about their vacation, or about what they received for Christmas. When the class was done with their journal, it was time for Spanish class. Senora Perla is our Spanish teacher. We have learned a lot about “verbos”, which is verbs in Spanish. When she passed out a story we were going to read in Spanish, all the students became noisy. Makena and Collin read aloud, so did Kathleen J. After that was over, it was time for Reading. I’m reading a book called, “Pick of a Litter”. When we were finished, it was time for recess. Many of the kids had to do extra work. When we were done with Reading, we had Spelling activities. Then we moved onto Math. First, we checked our homework. I got one wrong out of twelve. We did problem solvingstrategies, then we did Guided Practice. Lunchtime came around (yummy). Ryan got hurt during lunch recess. Then Mr.Jeanson came in to give usour Science test. It was pretty simple (but don’t tell Mr. Jeanson that). Afterwards, it was time for P.E. and we played soccer. After that, the subject of Social Studies was next. We all chose which Explorer we are doing a report on. I am doing my report on Lief Erickson. He was a Danish viking. Some people think he discovered America, not Christopher Columbus. At 3:00 pm the first bell rang and we were outside waiting for our parents’ to pick us up. At 3:10 p.m. the second bell rang and the parents were allowed to drive up and pick us up from school. I hope you enjoyed reading my Cantillon Chronicle. Have a super day!
Hi this is Enissa R. reporting again after the Christmas break. It took a little bit but we are now back in the groove of things. I am here today to tell you how my first day back to school went. The first subject we started out with was religion. After religion, math is the next subject we do. During math we look over our homework from the night before. On some of the problems I had some difficulties, but my teacher Miss Cantillon, explained it to the class. After that I understood it all.
Once we are finished with math it is on to vocabulary. Vocabulary is a hard subject, but I am getting better at understanding it. After vocabulary comes one of my favorite times of the day, you guessed it, recess. At recess we played volleyball “How fun.”
After recess is over we go back into the classroom. Our next assignment in the class room is grammar. It is what we call “Daily Oral Language.” Once grammar is over we played a math game called “24.” Part of the instructions Miss Cantillon gives is to always get along with everyone and don’t argue. “24” is a really fun game.
After all of this work we get hungry, so next comes lunch time. I sometimes read during my lunch break, after I eat my food. When we get back into the classroom we move onto to social studies. Right now we are learning about Explorers. We learned about Columbus killing for gold, spices, and clothing. From social studies we move on to writing. In writing we are working on establishing our paragraphs.
The end of the day is finally drawing near. We write down our homework assignments and listen for the final bell to ring and go home. Thanks for listening and have a great evening.
Hello, I will be reporting on January 1, 2007. First, we worked on portfolios and caught up on journal writing. I finished up a journal entry and worked a little on my portfolio.
Then, we went to student of the month. I knew I was going to be student of the month because my mom there. I was so proud when she called my name.
After that, we went back to our classroom got our snack and went out to recess. The guys and I played four square. It was a lot of fun.
Next, we went back up to computer. We worked on our power point presentation for our explorer project. I got really far on it.
Afterwards, we got in line for mass. Mr. Amador wasn’t there but the choir was great. I thought everybody sang great.
After all that, we had buddy reading. I asked Hanna what was her favorite thing to do and Hanna said “I really like to draw.” So Hanna and I started to draw our favorite charter in the book we are reading.
When we got back, Miss. Cantillon told us our homework for the weekend, packed up, and went home.
Hello, my name is Justin S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today. First, we all started writing in our morning journals. I wrote about the pets I like the most, my two fish.
Next, Ms. Cantillon handed out folders for our explorer research and we decorated them. I drew a picture of two men discovering an island and a boat. I put four pages in it
Then, we had a preliminary geography bee. Some of the questions related to the states, capitals, countries, and continents. But we never got to finish.
Our Science teacher is Mr. Jeanson. In his class today we weighed popped popcorn and unpopped popcorn. It turns out the unpopped popcorn weighs more. Then we filled out a sheet about our activity.
After that we finished up our preliminary geography bee. There were three. I made it to the second to last round.
Then we had recess. I played four squares with my other friends. We had so much fun.
Next we started a new math game called mountain math. I thought I was pretty good at it. It was also challenging at the same time. It was a great game.
After that we had music and practice for our piano recital. I am doing Ode to Joy with Westin. I can’t wait for it.
Next we had lunch. We played four squares again.
Then we got in to our literature circles. I am with Lance, Talon, and Sammy. We discussed the pages we have read so far.
Next we played a game called 24. I started at table 3 and made it to table 4. I love playing 24. It is so fun.
Last but not least we went over all our explore research. Then it was time to packed up and go home.
Hello, today I am the class reporter. My name is Madison. Today, I woke up early for school and I was the first one there! What we did in the morning was we did a journal entry.
Next, we had a Spanish test. Then, after the test, we played a game with Spanish verbs. It was very fun, and the girls won! After Spanish, we had D.E.A.R. where you read for about 20 minutes. Afterwards we had Literature. We are doing these things called “Literature Circles.” We read stories in Literature Circles and then we discuss it. Today, I was the Discussion Director. I had to write 5 questions about the story, but the answers can't be in the book.
Then, we had recess and I played with my new friends. When we came back in we had Spelling and worked in our workbooks. Then, we corrected the page. Math was next and we played with a board where we had to answer 20 questions on it called Mountain Math, we corrected our math homework. I got only 1 wrong!
Then we had Lunch. I had mini hot dogs. Then I walked around and played soccer. Afterwards, we had Science. We reviewed our Science homework. Our science teacher, Mr. Jeanson told us that we were going to have a Science test on Friday and that we had to study.
After Science, we had P.E. We played soccer. I’m on the red team, and I was playing the Blue team. Our P.E. teacher told us to stop playing. When we were about to leave the Basketball court and our P.E. teacher checked for nail polish. I didn’t have any, so I could proceed. After our good game of Soccer, we had Social Studies. We went over our explorer projects. Then we recorded our Podcast. A podcast is like a play, but recorded. Then we had a little bit of Religion.
Then we wrote down our homework, packed up, and left. Then we had to wait for our parents to come. That’s what we did in class today.
Today, we had "what's the point" in the morning . The "what's the point" is where we read articles then we fill out a sheet that has questions about the article we read. I did mine on this high-tech boat that runs on special gas and does not hurt the environment. I think I did a good job but that is me and I am not the teacher.
After that, we had Religion and Science. Then we had Vocab and that was really fun because we got to make vocab plays. My play was about evil aliens trying to hurt us. The next class was Computer class. We are doing explorer projects. My explorer is Jacques Cartier. He is really interesting. I have learned a lot of new things about him and how life was back then.
Next was Recess followed by a spelling test. I have no Idea on how I did on the test. We had PE afterwards. This was the last day of soccer. We will be starting running season next.
In the afternoon, we had D.E.A.R. I am reading the book called "The Top Ten Ways To Ruin The First Day Of Fifth Grade". It is a pretty good book and is pretty funny. I am doing pretty good on A.R. points. A.R. is where we all take quizzes on the books we read. The longer the book or the harder the book the more points we get.
Last we have Buddy reading. This is where we read to are first grade buddies. That is OK for me. At the end of the day, we pack up and go home. At home, we have fun and then work on homework!
I got to school and I did one journal entry. Every morning we have to do a journal entry. I wrote about how I’m a good loser, because in horse back riding you aren’t always going to win. You have to be, usually, really good at horse back riding to win a lot. then we had more time so I did one set of note cards for my explorer report. We are doing reports on explorers (mine is John Cabot.)
Next, senorita Pearla came in for Spanish.. We studied palabras. She asked us questions and we had to answer them if she said your name. We had D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read) you can read any thing you want to. I read about the Declaration of Independence. It was out of our literature book the class is reading.
After that, we had literature circles. Over the weekend my homework for lit circles was word finder, in word finder you pick five words out of the story you just read, and you guess what it means and write it down, then you look all the words up and you write down what it really means. Oh Yeah, I forgot to mention what lit circles even are! The whole class is reading a book, and we are put into special groups my group is Manci, Makena, and me Abby. Each group has a different assignments that you have to do on the story. My home work for tonight is illustrator (you draw something cool, funny, interesting etc.)
Then, we went out to recess. Like every other day we played four square. (I’m not that good at it.) the bell rang and we went inside.
We came inside and we had a spelling Pre-Pre test. That’s when we don’t know our spelling words but we have a test on them. We started math. We checked weekend home work, and lucky for us we got to work on homework.
Our class went out to lunch and I had a delicious chicken sandwich. (the weather was cold so I went in the sun and ate.) We played four square and went inside.
We went into art and we worked on our paper mushy animals (I did a horse as usual.) After that my mom, Manci’s mom, Tess and my brother worked on the rosary. Four at a time, we drew things on the HUGE rosary. It was a pretty cool rosary. I left right after art but I will predict what happened.
Later on we had science Jeopardy with Mr. Jeanson (but I don’t know what team won. But I bet it was intense!)
Next we had library. With Mrs. Zipp. Then we went back into class and we did some note cards and we went home. “As you say it was one heck of a day!”
Today began as most Wednesdays do here in the 5th Grade at Stella Maris Academy. In the mornings we are to do a journal entry and my topic today was “If I could make any dessert, what would it be?” Ms. Cantillon usually gives us 15 minutes to complete this assignment. I finished my story and was all of a sudden hungry for something sweet.
Our first class today was Spanish. Ms. Parla, our Spanish teacher, gave us a pronoun quiz. I did well on the quiz, but it wasn’t that difficult. After the quiz, we read a play aloud in Spanish. I was Maria in the play. I enjoy reading stories in Spanish.
Our next class was DEAR (drop everything and read). I really enjoy this time because I am reading a book called Superfudge. I would recommend this book as I find it hilarious. When I am reading I actually laugh out loud.
After reading we began our literature circle. This is a time when you go into your assigned groups and read and discuss stories. Our group is made up of 4 students, Yasmine, Kathleen J., Juliana, and myself. Our group is named the Fanta Girls. We are reading about the American Revolution in our Open Court Reading book. We are assigned different homework tasks each night and come back to our groups the next day and review our work. There are 5 different jobs within the group. You can be assigned to be the discussion director, illustrator, correspondent, word finder, and connector. I have done all of these jobs and my favorite is illustrator. I really enjoy bringing the story to life by a drawing.
It was a very special morning recess as it was Lance’s birthday today and he brought doughnuts for all of us to enjoy. They were delicious. I heard many of my fellow students say, “Happy Birthday Lance”. Ms. Cantillon also gave us a few extra minutes of recess today. This is truly a special occasion.
Prior to lunch when we were back in the classroom, a loud buzzing noise came into our room. It was a fire drill! The first thing everyone needs to remember in a situation like this is to remain calm. The fire drill went very well and everyone followed the rules.
After lunch we returned to the classroom for Science class. Everyone was a bit nervous for Science class as we were having a chapter test today. Mr. Jeanson is our Science teacher and gave us the test. We graded the tests after we finished. I like when the tests are graded right away as I can find out how I did on that particular test. After Science class we had P.E. We had to run for 5 minutes straight around the P.E. yard. We then had 2 races during P.E. as well. By the time P.E. finished, the class was super tired. In Social Studies we enjoyed a short movie on explorers, but we didn’t finish the movie as we ran out of time for the day.

Hi! I am Tyler. Today in school we did our morning work. Afterwards we did vocabulary; we were working with our 8 o’clock partners. Then we had recess; I was playing 4 square.
Next, we went back into our classroom and had science. Lance said "Dude, pop the balloon." After we had a spelling test - it was ok. Then we had PE, and we had to run for a long time. Then we had relay races; the boys won both times. We were undefeated-yay!
Finally we went to our buddies. After that, we went home and that was our day.
School started at 8:15 and we had to write a journal entry in our notebooks. I was writing about whether I wanted to get married or not. It took around 25 minutes to go to the next subject, which was Religion.
In Religion we worked on reviewing our religion note cards with our three o'clock partners. If we were reviewing the note cards correctly we would get ten points. Around 15 minutes later we went on to copying notes from the Smart Board (an advanced white board). Afterwards, Mr. Jeanson (our science teacher) walked in the door. That is when we started science.
Today in Science we went over our homework that was due. We had to do an experiment in class and write about it for homework. Then we finished that so we went on to the next unit. We are now learning about the Earth's atmosphere. At 10:00 Miss Cantillon came into our classroom to start the next lesson, Vocab.
We actually were looking at her PowerPoint that she did for her class. It was very interesting and well done. It even had some pictures of kids in our class. They were showing something happening in the picture like the sticky note strategy, portfolios , writing an agenda (vocab word), and researching something for a project. That ended quickly because the bell rang, that means recess!
During recess we all at our snacks and played. I was playing with my best friend Kathleen Devaney. We were really just throwing basket balls into the hoops, nothing special. Even though I didn't make any we still had fun. Sadly the bell rang telling us to go back to class but that's okay we had a fun subject ahead, music!
During music we were going over our songs for the piano recital we are going to have in a couple of months (my song was the woodchuck). Everyone was playing out load for a prize that we would get at the end of the music class. Everyone was great and even some made up their songs. Music class finished and the prize was given to Pablo for playing a REALLY hard song and sounding great. We all went back to the classroom to get ready for, Spelling.
Miss Cantillon explained that we were going to study our Spellathon words that we got a long time ago but wants us to review them. So spelling didn't really go on so we just went to vocab. In vocab we went over our review units 4-6. That finished quickly so we went over our item that we our auctioning for the auction. We are making a giant rosary and decorating it ( we have Manci's and Abby's moms to thank). Around five minutes later the lunch bell rang.
I sat with my friends Kathleen D. and Enissa R.. Then we jumped rope and threw balls again. Time passed quickly and the bell rang to go inside to my favorite subject, D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read)
During D.E.A.R. I read a book called Molly Moon's Magical Book of Hypnotism. 30 minutes later, we started Literature Circles; I had a group of three people, Madison, Enissa and me. We went over our homework that we completed and got everything ready for this night's homework. Time passed quickly to the next subject: Math.
During Math, we had a math multiplication speed drill with 80 questions. That took two minutes, then we went into Mountain Math, where we had to answer questions. Soon we worked on test prep, and then went to our next subject: Social Studies.
In Social Studies, we were learning about Portuguese and Spanish explorers. First, we read over our notes that our teacher had typed up, then we read part of the book when Miss Cantillon had to leave, and Mr. Martin came in, instead. We read our books.
Then we had to pack up and leave for the day.
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, we unpacked and did our morning work; a journal entry. We quickly put away our journals as Senora Perla, the Spanish teacher, walked in. After we said good morning to her, she put us all in groups of six to do a play while reading a story in Spanish. When Senora Perla left we got out our books for DEAR(20min today). Shortly after that, we got with our literature circles to discuss our reading. My group, Kathleen J, Juliana L, and Kathleen D, are already done with our reading 3 days ago. Now we use this time to work on our final project. Yaaaaaaay! Recess!
When it was time to come back in from recess, we worked on our vocabulary skits with our 12:00 partners (mine’s Kathleen J). When our time was up, we had a division math speed- drill. Next, we corrected our homework from last Thursday and did our Test Prep page. Today we didn’t do Mountain Math. Mmmmmmmmmmm! Pizza lunch!
After our delicious lunch, we went into the science lab to have art class. We are all making paper mache real or imaginary animals. I’m making a deformed monkey! We left art straight to science class. We reviewed a quiz we are going to have tomorrow. As the science teacher left, half of the class went to library while the other class stayed behind to have writing (we switch after 30min). Miss Cantillon said secret student (Juliana) and then we packed up to go home.

Hi, my name is Kathleen J.. I am here to report about what happened in class today, Friday, January 26, 2007. Today we had a substitute teacher, Miss Rezen. The first thing we did this morning was do our “What’s the Point” sheet like we do every Friday morning.
At 8:45 we had science class with Mr. Jeanson where we discussed about weather. We were also given homework about weather and we have to do it for 4 days. In our homework assignment we have to look in the newspaper and find the temperature, the rainfall or snowfall, the wind direction and speed and the cloud conditions for each of the 4 days we have to do our homework assignment.
After science class, we played a math game called 24. 24 is a game when you have a card and there are four numbers you have to add, subtract multiply or divide to get the number 24. I first started off in the table that is second to the last from the head table. After that round I went up from Texas to the head table because I got the most points in that round. In the second round at the head table I got enough points to stay at the head table and then we had to go into computer class with Mr. Martin.
In computer class we took a picture on the Photo Booth and then we edited the picture on I-Photo. In I-Photo you can make your photo brighter, adjust the contrast and retouch the picture. After we were done editing our picture on I-Photo, we had to print the picture of ourselves and make it a greeting card so we can give it to our parents or our grandparents. I will give my card to my parents.
Afterwards, we had recess. At recess I played jump rope with my friends. Then while we were jump roping I totally forgot that I needed to get a book for my first grade buddy so I can read it to her at 12:30. So I told my friend, “Julie, I have to get a book for my buddy.” So my friend and I went to the library to get a book for my buddy. I decided to get her a book called Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? I got her this book because she cannot read that well. After that I went back to recess and played jump rope with my friends. After recess we went back to our classroom.
Then, we took our spelling test that consisted of 25 words. Our spelling test was supposed to be 50 words but our teacher told our substitute teacher on a note that we only have to take 25 words for the test. During the middle of our spelling test, our P.E. teacher came in so we stopped our spelling test. We were going to finish taking our spelling test after P.E.
At P.E. we had to run for 9 minutes straight without stopping. We walked 2-3 rounds before we started running and then our P.E. teacher, Mr. Guay, blew the whistle and we had to start running. After the 9 minutes were over we stopped running and started to walk around a couple of rounds again. After walking around for a little bit we told our P.E. teacher how many laps we ran. I ran 16 laps. Then we got a drink of water. After that we had to do relay races where boys competed against girls. We did this twice and the boys won twice.
When P.E. was over, we finished taking our spelling test. This took about 10 minutes. When we finished taking our spelling test we read for 5 minutes so we can go to the first grade class to read our books to our buddies. At 11:45 we lined up at the door and proceeded to the first grade classroom.
When we were at first grade, I read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You Hear? I read this book to my buddy and another girl named Emily because her partner was not there. After I read it to them, they read it back to me. After they finished reading the book to me I let them draw. They drew a picture of the ocean with fish, coral and birds and they drew it for Mrs. Hunter, the kindergarten teacher. After they finished drawing their picture to Mrs. Hunter it was time for our class to leave.
Once we crossed the street from the first grade, our substitute teacher gave us candy for 3 scholar dollars (tickets). She called us table by table to get candy and then we packed up, prayed and went home.

Hi, my name is Juliana Lopez and I am today’s reporter for Cantillon Chronicle. We started off this morning with writing one journal entry and Miss Cantillon telling us that today was grandparent’s day. Then we reviewed our religion note cards with a partner and started making our triptychs. Some people worked in groups and some worked alone. A triptych is a religious panel with three sides.
After religion we had science with Mr. Jeanson. We read about weather in our science book on pages B12-B13. Then we got to start on a homework worksheet due tomorrow. The last question was hard.
After science we had recess. During recess the girls played jump rope and the boys played with the football. When that was over we worked on our triptychs for a little and then went to mass for grandparent’s day. At the end we sang a song for the grandparents.
Following we had lunch. After Miss Cantillon told us who won the secret student drawing from last week. It was me! Then we had DEAR (drop everything and read). Some people read, wrote blogs on the computer, or took accelerated reader quizzes.
During reading we met with our literature circle groups and worked on our presentations about American independence.
When that was over we did more of our explorer presentations. Everyone did so well! Once we finished our presentations we got to go out to play for ten minutes because of mass. Mrs. Lowell gave us extra recess.
Finally we packed up and Miss Cantillon announced the star citizen from last week and secret student for today. “Last week’s star citizen has improved so much since the beginning of the year. Star citizen is Tyler!” is what Miss Cantillon said. Today’s secret student was Talon. Finally we went home.
Hello, I am Makena and I am your Cantillon Chronicle reporter for today.
We all changed our seats today, because it is the end of the quarter. Also, today is Pastor's Appreciation Day and our pastor is Msgr. Lyng. It was also his birthday on Sunday. So all of the grades went to the parish hall and made a present for him. He said,” the only way I will celebrate my Birthday cake is if I share it with you." So we got to eat cake and it was really good. Although, too bad that soon it was time to go.
Later on, we had D.E.A.R. and I read a book on Heartbeat. It was very good and it was about a girl named Annie and she loves to run. When she runs barefoot, she always thinks of her heart, which goes thump thump.
Once we where done with reading, we had literature circles. When we have literature circles, we discuss what we read or what we will do. Manci and I were making up verses for the books we read to the song Yankee Doodle. I enjoy literature circles.
Afterwards, we had vocabulary and we learned and drew illustrations about the word. We learned six words and tonight we have to write and draw 20 more words to do.
The following subject is Grammar. We were learning about pronouns. Here are some of the types of pronouns that we learned: Nominative, Objective, Possessive, and Reflexive. Now, I know what they mean. Miss Cantillon also told us that we have to learn a mnemonic and learn our pronouns.
At 11:00 a.m. we did some of our explorer projects. We only had a couple left and I thought they were very good. My explorer was Sir Walter Raleigh and I learned a lot from him. Although, now I have learned about almost every explorer.
After we finished that, we had Math. We had a multiplication speed drill were you have 2 minutes to do 80 problems. Next, we checked over our homework. I got a 95%, but that's okay. If you were wondering what we learned in Math, we are learning division.
The next thing we did was art. We made paper mache animals. We first put newspaper in glue, and then we used napkins and did the same thing to the napkins. Then we wrapped the napkin around it into any animal. Then, I am painted it. When I finished it, the animal looked pretty good.
Then we had science with Mr. Jeanson. We had homework due. It was Measure and Gather Data about the weather. It was pretty easy. I thought everybody did well on it. We also had to read our science book and tonight we have to study for a quiz.
Once we finished science, we had library and writing. We split the class up into two groups. In writing we had to persuade the Queen why she should pay our explorer to go out on a voyage. Once that was finished, the other half of the class including me went to the library. In library class we had to pick a partner and look some books up. When we finished looking them up, my friend Juliana and I played with I-Spy books.
Finally, the part that I was waiting for, the end of the day. Although today, Miss Cantillon could not announce the secret student. My mom and sister picked me up and I went home. Well, that was today's Cantillon Chronicle.
Hi, I am Pablo Ortega, and I will be telling you what happened in the 5th grade class today, Wednesday, January 31, 2007. Today is Teacher Appreciation day, so I was very good to my teacher. First thing we did in the morning was to turn in our morning journals. We had to turn in 14 stories written on our journals.
Once that was done we had Spanish class. We greeted the Spanish teacher and she told us to play Jeopardy with our groups. The people in my group were Makena, Tyler, Kathleen D. and me. I got to be the score keeper and according to my calculations Makena won by a lot. The winners of each group got to compete against each other; and I got to be the score keeper for that as well. There was a tie at the end of that game between Makena and Kathleen J. The Spanish teacher had to leave so they would compete against each other in the next class.
Next we had D.E.A.R. which means Drop Everything And Read. I finished a book called Eagle Strike and I started reading the next book of the series called Scorpia. This is about a teenage spy that finds out that his dad (who is now dead) was actually the world’s greatest contract killer. Suddenly the buzzer went on, it was set for 20 minutes, and we stopped reading and gathered with our Literature circle group. Mine is Collin, Westin and my self; and started working on our report about The Declaration of Independence. I had to research interesting facts like they used the Liberty Bell to call citizens for the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.
After that we discussed the Vocabulary words and asked the person that sits next to you what they meant. That was only for 5 minutes. Then came the fun part of the day: Recess!!! We played two touch football and had a lot of fun. I got to be the quarter back, which is the best part, because you get to throw the ball and do a lot of quarter back sneaks. Unfortunately that was only 15 minutes of fun and it went by very fast.
Once we got into the classroom, we had Spelling and had to work on 20 words from our spelling workbook. Spelling comes and goes really fast, so then came the long part of the day…Math. First we had to answer 80 multiplications in under 2 minutes, I got them all right. Then we checked our homework and I think I did pretty well on it. After that we reviewed a new chapter about rounding up numbers. We did the guided practice, which is like 6 questions and she assigned us our homework.
Today is also a special day because we had the Annual International Lunch, which means that parents that volunteer bring different international dishes and we get to try them. Everything was delicious but I think I ate too much. I had a stomach ache after wards. Once we stopped eating we still had a few minutes of our time to play outside and once again we played two touch football but this time the teams were bigger. When that was over we had a Science quiz but since I was absent on Friday and Monday I didn’t take it.
While my classmates were taking the quiz I reviewed homework and read a little of Scorpia. But the Science teacher, Mr. Jeanson wasn’t here all we had to do was the quiz for like fifteen minutes. So we went outside to play for P.E. today since it was a special day today Mr. Guay, the P.E. teacher, let us played anything we wanted and of course we played, two touch football. This time Mr. Guay wanted to play so he was the quarter back. He threw the ball really hard.
In Social Studies we read about Christopher Columbus and other famous explorers. That was pretty much all we did. Finally, the last subject of the day was Religion. We had to draw a triptych which means three sided. Ryan and I got to draw our own triptych. We drew ours about when Jesus was born, when Jesus died and about the Resurrection. We kind of fooled with the heads in our drawing.
At last the day was over and I got to go home.

Today is Feb. 1st. We moved seats yesterday and now I am with Makena, Justin and Ryan. Enough about yesterday let’s talk about today. First we all read books in the morning. Then Mrs. Lowell came on the intercom and we said the morning prayed. Next we all reviewed our religion note cards, and did our trip ticks. At math we did math speed drill. And checked our homework. It was spelling time and miss Cantillon let us do our activities so we would have no H.W. it is recess now all the girls played jump rope. Yay it is 24 time I got moved up 2 tables. Now that it is lunch we are getting ice cream today. When we came back from lunch we all went into our groups for literature. Makena and I are writing a song. Miss Cantillon told us we are going to watch a explorer movie. Next came computers it was kind of stressful for some people. After that we read our explorer essays. It is 3:00 time to go home bye.

Student of the month is where two or three students are picked for being nice and respectful. Next, we had computers. In computer class, we made our own web sites. “That was Fun!” After that, we had recess. Once recess was done, we had our spelling test. After the spelling test, we had reading. Hello, my name is Justin S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today. First, we all started practicing our religion flash cards for our Ncea Acre Religion test later in the day. Next, we had Spanish. We worked in groups on a play our teacher handed out to each group we were the last to perform. I think we did a good job acting out our play. Then, we had D.E.A.R. Drop everything and read I read something ghostly and also wrote a book recommendation blog. We read for 18 minutes.
After that, Kathleen J., Juliana, Kathleen D. and Yamin gave a Presentation on all the units we read in our open court reading book. I liked how they acted out their play so well.
Then, we worked on vocabulary in pairs; I worked with makena. We finished our vocab actives and then worked on our vocab note cards for unit 7. Next, we had recess. We got ice cream sandwiches for everyone taking an AR quiz for the month. Then me and the other boys played football for 20 minuets. After that, we all got in our grammar groups to finish making our pronouns songs. I am with Lance and Ryan. We are basing our song on twinkle twinkle little star.
Then, we took our Ncea Acre Religion test Part 1. I think I did petty good on it. It lasted for 45 minuets. When you finished we read our book. Next, we had lunch. We had Pizza hot lunch today. When we got back we played football. After that, we had art calls and we painted our papier-mâché animals. I painted mine pink and green it is a flying pig. I think it looks good for now.
Then, we had science class; we worked on an experiment on turning salt water into fresh water and it worked. Next, we went to Honor Roll Assembly. It lasted for 30 minutes. When we got back we took the star reading test. I thought I did pretty well.

Hello, today I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter. This is where I tell you what we did in class today. My name is Madison. First thing we did in the morning was to sing our Pronoun Song. This is where we put pronouns together to the tune of a song we like. For example, my group did Jingle Bell Rock, but we called it Grammar Bell Rock. Next, we worked on our Triptych. A Triptych is a three-sided panel. It is a really famous type of artwork that people make. Then, we had Reading. We just finished reading a book with 8 stories. Some of the stories in the book were The American Revolution, The Night the Revolution Began, and The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. During the reading class, we continued to present our book reports on the stories that began on Monday.
After Reading, we had recess and I played jump rope with my friends. When we returned to class, we played “24 Math.” That’s where you have cards with numbers on them and you have to find a way to put all those numbers to equal 24. For example you have — 0, 1, 8, 3. You could do 1x 1= 1, then you could do 8x3=24, then you do 24x1=24, and there you have it! Afterwards, we had lunch where I just sat around, ate and relaxed. When lunch was over and we were back in class, we played the game Silent Ball. Silent Ball is when someone throws the ball to you and you try to catch it without falling off your desk. If you don’t catch it, you’re out. One other way to get out is if you talk. When we finished Silent Ball, we had Grammar. We did three pages in our workbook. In Social Studies, we did a packet about explorers. Following that, we had Computers that was very fun!!!!! Once we finished, we worked on our opening, and closing paragraphs. That is where we write a letter to the King and Queen, and we have to make it good. Finally after a hardworking day at school, it was time to pack up and go home. Yea!
First we did some triptych I am partners with Tyler and Justin; ours is the best in the class. Well that is what I think.
Next we did Dear and I read a book called Loser I just started it so I don’t know much about it so that is it on Dear.
Then we did computer I don’t remember what it was called that we did but it was kind of fun it had something to do with a graph.
After that, we played football at recess and I was quarterback. Our team won by a two points we had an advantage because we had some more skilled players.
Then we came back in and did are vocab plays. Mine was about a scientist who dissected a frog IT WAS SWEET. Then we did a vocab test I think I did pretty good, but I will have to wait and see.
When we went out to lunch we played football again but are team lost this time by one point. Then we went to Science with Mr. Jeanson we went over are homework and talked about the experiment we had to do over the weekend. Then we go to PE and ran 12 minutes I ran 23 laps then we went to music and did some games. Last we did SS and went home.
It’s the 100th day of school! I brought in 100 Horse Back Riding ribbons. We started our day off with Spanish. In Spanish we learned about animals
After that we had DEAR (Drop Everything And Read.) I’m reading The Horse and His Boy. I like it a lot.
We are just about to star a new book called My Brother Sam Is Dead. She gave us several words to look up in the dictionary and write down. I only got half of the words and definitions written down.
We had Vocab. My partner was Makena. We explained the pictures that we had o draw and then we went on working on Synonyms and Antonyms. Then we went out to recess.
At recess I played Jump Rope. Then we went in and had Math. At math we did a speed drill, we worked on Mt. Math, then we did math problems with our 100 items.
We went out to lunch then we had art. At art I worked on my paper horse. We had science and we went over home work and got notes for our quiz tomorrow. We had writing/library at writing we worked on a special assignment. As we sat “What a Day!”
Happy Valentine’s Day! Today was a wonderful day full of holiday festivities. It was special from the very beginning. We were able to add a splash of red to our uniforms today. The classroom looked brighter with a touch of red on most everyone.
Our day began with a fun activity using the words Valentine’s Day and we were able to make cards too. It was a day of tests and quizzes. We then took our Social Studies test on early explorers. We then had one of my favorite classes, DEAR (drop everything and read). I read, “My Brother Sam is Dead”. I think I will like this story as it is about the American Revolution.
We enjoyed our morning recess and then completed our multiplication speed drill. We then did “Mountain Math”. We corrected our Math homework that was a bit difficult as it was long division with more than one number.
After lunch, Mr. Jeanson came in and taught Science. Today there was a Science quiz on weather. This quiz had many terms and definitions. Weather terms can be confusing, but it sure is interesting. I hope to be studying weather in college, as I want to be a Meteorologist when I grow up. Mr. Guay taught P.E. after Science and we ran for fifteen minutes. It’s a lot harder than it sounds. I was able to run 20 laps today, which is the longest I have run so far.
Two o’clock in the afternoon finally arrived. It was officially Valentine time! We were able to pass out our Valentines to one another and prepared for our party with our buddies. We went over to the Junior Yard to celebrate this holiday with our 1st grade friends. There were so many treats and balloons. What a wonderful party and a great way to end our day at school.

Hello! I’m Collin and I’m your reporter today! First we started doing journal entry like we always do. I did mine on why or why not I like talking on the phone. (I don’t). Next we got with partners and practicing our religion flash cards. We have 200 of them and we have to study them for a religion bee n March. I think I’ve memorized almost all of them.
At 9 o’clock we had a woman come in and talk to us for an hour about the weather and water in San Diego and all around the world. We learned many facts about the jet stream, temperature, and air pressure and what effect they have on the weather. I found it very interesting myself.
Next we went out to recess a little early. We all had a lot of fun jump roping and playing with balls. When we came back in, we had some time for D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read). We are starting a book that takes place during the revolution called My Brother Sam is Dead. We corrected our math homework next. Right now we are working on long division and remainders. I think it is kind of confusing but I’m getting better. After that, like all Thursdays, we played 24. It is a really fun math game (see Madison, February 8th for instructions). We played that for a while and then we went out to lunch. We did pretty much what we did at recess. We also played ping pong.
Next we went over our vocabulary for our book. We worked with our tables and worked together to get all the words. Some examples of these words are loyalist, rebel, and lobster back. My group got most of them done.
After the book vocabulary, went over to a special presentation in the parish hall. It was a reenactment of some of the major events in Jesus’ life and some of the lessons he taught us. I thought it was very interesting not just because the actors were good, but because the whole thing was done by two people. It lasted about an hour and then it ended.
We went back to our room; we went straight to the computer lab. I love computer class because I like technology and I understand mostly all of what we learn. Today we learned how to get to and log onto the server. It was interesting because we got to set our passwords that only we know. For the last half hour after that we went back to our room and we read some of our letters to the class. Right now, in Social Studies, we are learning about the age of discovery(the time of discovering the new world),so we had to right persuasive letters to the people that funded Columbus’ or another explorers voyage, telling them why or why not to fund it. I wrote mine to the King and Queen of England about why the should fund Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s voyage. Some people went the extra mile and soaked the paper in tea or coffee and burnt the edges with a match to make it look old. I thought they were all very well written
Finally, it was 3 o’clock and time to go home.
First, we did our morning work in are journals then Miss Cantillon checked our homework journals and I had everything written down, but I forgot to get it signed.
Then we had our states and capitals quiz - it was easy if you studied but there were some people that did not do a good but I did do a good job.
Afterwards, we had recess I was playing basketball with 3 fourth graders and I thought it was not and equal team put there I go threw Ricky across Chris and over Robby I score and I am I the lead and I smoked them since they were so small and I always packed them when they were about to shoot.
Then, we went back inside and we had another evil quiz in science. After I was done we had to check it, this is when the pressure hit and I got a 95% on it yah! My mom will be so happy !!!!!!
After are favorite subject was coming up it was PE. We had to run for 20 minutes. It was so hot out, it was like a stepping on hot flaming coals on the ground. Then, Westin said, "go with out me," and we said, 'ok.' We ran off because it was only 2 more minutes left. Enissa's dad came to our class and talked about drugs and how are they bad for you. Finally, It was time for us to go home. This is Tyler F. reporting for Cantillion Chronicles over and out.
School started at 8:15 and we had to write a journal entry in our notebooks. I was writing about the weekend. In my journal I wrote how I went to my friends house and went to a movie (bridge to Terabithia). That took around fifteen minutes and then we went to our next subject, Spanish.
Miss Perla (our Spanish teacher ) walked in the classroom for a wonderful Spanish class. Today in Spanish we were learning about the names of the people in the family (family in Spanish is spelled like this, Jamillia). First we got three pieces of paper about our family. We took the first page and started to label the family members like Grandpa is Abuelo in Spanish. The class all worked together and we got it done in about ten minutes. After that we took the second paper which was a crossword puzzle (YEAH). There were words back words, forwards, cross ways, and everywhere! At first it was difficult but everyone got the hang of it. I finished and showed my paper to the teacher and I got everything right! Afterwards we grabbed the third paper and wrote some Spanish words into English words (it was really easy). Then Miss Perla had to leave and Miss Cantillon came back in for DEAR.
During DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), the students picked out individual books to read. I read Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism. It was about a girl that found a book about hypnotism. During DEAR Miss Cantillon gave out all the progress reports. That took about 30 minutes and then we went on to Reading class. During Reading, we were talking about My Brother Sam Is Dead which is our class novel. We all read out loud individually and discussed the characters. Then we went on to our next subject, Vocabulary.
During Vocabulary, we met with our 6 o'clock partners, and my partner was Jason Shutt. We were discussing Unit 8 words and doing the Synonyms and Antonyms activity. That quickly finished and we lined up for recess.
At recess, I played with my best friends Maddie and Kathleen Devaney. We all ate our snack and enjoyed having the company while we were jumping rope. Everyone had a good time playing but, sadly, the bell rang to go back to class to our next subject, Social Studies.
In Social Studies we are learning the fifty states and capitals. Today we are learning the Mid Atlantic States and Capitals. The Mid Atlantic states are New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. The Capitals are Albany, Harrisburg, Trenton, Dover, and Annapolis. After that was done we had to label the states and capitals on our state poster. I worked with my table and we finished in about fifteen to twenty minutes and started to label other thing like the Hudson River And Washington DC. Soon the whole class finished and then we changed subjects to Math.
Today in Math, we got to divide and count M&M's. Everyone received different amounts and different colors. We had to make our percentages into fractions. We all used calculators for this project then Miss Cantillon let us eat our M&M's and she also passed out today's homework. After that was finished, we all had to line up for lunch in alphabetical order.
Lunchtime was special today because it was a Pizza Lunch day. Everybody enjoyed the pizza, salad and ice cream. This took about 30 minutes for lunch, when Miss Cantillon stood up to dismiss us for recess (in the Senior Yard). I again played with my best friends and had fun jump roping with them. Then the bell rang, and we all went into the classroom for Art.
Our Art teacher is named Miss McGarrey and she had a fun art project for us to do. We had to sketch out birds that we thought we could make into a magazine collage. She showed us pictures of birds and some of the completed projects from last year's 5th graders. Then we all decided on our birds, and started work on the rough drafts. Soon, Mr. Jeanson walked in for Science.
In Science, we were doing a Jeopardy review for tomorrow's test. All the students were placed into groups by even and odd numbers. The even numbers won the contest, so they received an extra 5% on their test score. We had an extra 5 minutes in class so we played Silent Ball. Silent Ball is a game where you have to be quiet while throwing the ball to each other without dropping it or throwing it badly. Miss Cantillon walked in and dismissed the first group for Library.
In Library class, we all got to check out to books of our choice. We also were able to take Accelerated Reader (AR) quizzes. Accelerated Reader quizzes allow us to gain points towards our Reading grade. I checked out two books on gerbils. Soon the timer rang for us to go upstairs for Writing.
In Writing we were working on a page about what we think our vocation might be. This was for a contest with the Sixth Graders and the Fifth Graders. There will be four winners, two from each class. The second group walked into the classroom and Miss Cantillon passed out King Cake. King Cake is a type that represents Mardi Gras. There was also a Baby Jesus hidden in the cake. Whoever found the Jesus would receive a strand of beads. Westin found the baby Jesus. Soon we were packing up for the day and leaving the school after a wonderful day.
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, we unpacked and did our morning work; a letter to a person named Sgt.Shimket. We quickly put away our letters as Senora Perla, the Spanish teacher, walked in. After we said good morning to her, we started drawing our family tree in Spanish. After we finished that, we made animal dominoes. When Senora Perla left we got out our books for DEAR. We are now reading My Brother Sam is Dead. Shortly after that, we went excitedly to see the circus of the Kids in our Parish Hall. It was only workshop and souvenir time. In workshop, we learned how to juggle 3 scarves in a cascade pattern (side-ways figure eight or “X”). Then, we started to shop for a few minutes. I got a vase/hat and a giant blow-up hammer. When we left, we had recess.
When it was time to come back in from recess, we had math. During this, we talked a little about how to make percentages and had a little more of M&M math. Finally, lunch came!
After our delicious lunch, we had our science test. It was a chapter test so it was pretty long and kind of hard. I think I got 100% on it. When the science teacher left, the class went back to the circus to see their performance. It was spectacular! I ate cotton- candy, popcorn, and drank Pepsi. When they played with fire, they told us,” Don’t try this at home or you’ll burn your face off!” We left (for good) and talked about our State Travel Fair project. Miss Cantillon said there was no secret student and then we packed up to go home with our wonderful souvenirs.

Hello again! My name is Samuel Hidalgo and I will be your reporter today. Today we were anxiously ready for our field trip, the visit to the Timken Museum. First we read then we shared our Triptychs and they were well done.
After, we drew a picture of Jesus. Then we had a quick snack and packed up for the bus. When we arrived we started forming three groups and went in the museum. We looked at Triptychs, people, and other fascinating things.
Then we had lunch outside. I saw a lot of fish! The biggest was the catfish! I had a great lunch time! Finally we head back to the bus and back to school. Our class had recess when we got back. Next, we worked on our essay. Soon we played 24 and I had fun. Then, we head for computer class. We first went to our computer teacher’s website and then worked on our power point presentation. Hi, my name is Kathleen Johansen. I am here to report about what happened in class today, Monday, February 26, 2007. Today the first thing we did was our morning work which was writing a journal entry.
After we finished writing our journal entry, we had our religion class. In religion, Miss Cantillon read a passage from Mark 2:1-12. The story was about a miracle Jesus performed when he helped a man walk again after being paralyzed. We also shared our images of Jesus and we shared to the class what we drew for our image and how our picture related to the reading.
My image of Jesus was the Beatitudes and I drew Jesus preaching to the people. I drew the symbols of each of the eight Beatitudes around Jesus.
We also pasted our image of Jesus on a construction paper and Miss Cantillon hung them up in our classroom. The last thing we did was review our flashcards for our religion bee which will take place in less than a month.
Following religion, we had science with Mr. Jeanson. We talked about heat which is the sun’s energy. We also did an experiment where we put soil in one carton and water in another carton and putting a thermometer in each one. After we did that, we put the two cartons outside in a shady area and waited for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes were over, the soil and the water had the same temperature. Then we put the two cartons outside in a sunny area and when the 10 minutes were over the temperature of the soil was higher than the temperature of the water. After that, we put the cartons outside in a shady area again and waited for another 10 minutes. When the 10 minutes were over the temperature of the soil and the water were the same. We also have a homework sheet to do at home about the experiment.
When science was over, we went on to vocabulary. In vocabulary we checked the activities in our book for Unit 8. We are also going to start our vocabulary scripts for Unit 8 tomorrow.
Afterwards, we had recess. During recess I played double Dutch with my friends. We are pretty good now that we have practiced a lot. Then, the bell rang and we went back to our classroom.
Our next class was music. In music we practiced for our All Stars Recital. Not all the students will be in the All Stars Recital because Mr. Amador, our music teacher, had to approve the song you will perform.
My best friend, Julie and I made it to the All Stars Recital. We are doing a song called the Chopsticks. I am very happy that I made it to the recital.
Once we were finished with music, we worked on our states and capitals poster. This week we are studying the southeastern states. We filled in the states and capitals for the southeast states and we also wrote them on the board so everybody will know how to spell them right. Once we were finished filling in our poster, we colored the regions that we have studied so far on the map of the United States. While we colored the regions, we also listened to the states and capitals rap.
In spelling class, we played “Let’s Make a Deal.” In “Let’s Make a Deal” Miss Cantillon asks us if we have what she asks for like a clean desk or a clean binder. If you have what she asks for, you are rewarded a piece of candy or 2 tickets. I got one piece of candy for having a clean binder.
At 11:45 we went out for lunch. During lunch I played double Dutch again with my friends. We really love playing this game. I told my friends,“I love playing this game!” Then, the bell rang and we had to go back inside.
Once we were inside we had D.E.A.R. which stands for Drop Everything And Read. During D.E.A.R. I read a book called Zia by Scott O’Dell. I enjoy reading this book it is really exciting.
Once we finished D.E.A.R. we had literature. We read aloud from the book My Brother Sam is Dead. First Miss Cantillon read a couple of pages and then she chose people to read. I read a couple of pages and so did some other kids.
During math time, we did our 2 minute multiplication speed drill. After our speed drill we worked on Mountain Math which is composed of 24 problems which we have to solve by the end of the week. I did numbers 1-5. We then checked our homework from last week because we were not able to do it then. After that, Miss Cantillon asked us to write on a Post-It one thing we knew about division and later we had to put them on the board. Then we had our coffee break. This is when we can get up and talk for 2 minutes.
After math, we went on to social studies. During social studies Miss Cantillon explained how to do our works cited cards and research for our state project. She let us work on our research cards and works cited cards for the rest of the day.
Finally, we wrote down our homework for the week, packed up, prayed and went home.

Hello, my name is Juliana L. and I am today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. We started our morning work by either reviewing states and capitals, doing state research, or writing our state project notecards.
Then Miss Perla, our Spanish teacher, came. We learned new words and talked about our family with the people sitting at our table. We also wrote down some notes on some words we needed to know.
After Spanish we had DEAR , which stands for drop everything and read. We read for about 25 minutes and then we had reading class. During reading class, we watched a video on the revolutionary war. Then in our notebooks we wrote notes on the six revolutionary war figures from the video.
During vocabulary we worked on our unit eight scripts with our seven o’clock partners.
Next we had recess inside because it was raining outside. We played games, talked, and ate our snacks.
Afterwards we had grammar. We watched a power point on how to use a comma and then we took notes. In our notes we were supposed to write the rule and then under it an example. We did about five to seven rules today.
In math today we did many things. First we did a division speed drill. Then we did about eight or more problems in mountain math. Finally we checked last night’s homework and learned how to play this game called quotient quest for tonight’s homework.
Then we had lunch. It wasn’t raining anymore so we got to play outside.
After lunch we had art. In art some people were finishing their papier mâché while other kids were drawing birds on a piece of paper.
Next we were supposed to have science but it canceled because our science teacher was on a field trip with his homeroom class. Instead we listened to a podcast done by some of our classmates. It was about Rosa Parks since it is black history month. Then we watched two videos. The first video was about the U.S. constitution. The second video was showing us an example of a geometry project we are going to be doing.
During library/writing numbers eleven through twenty went to library first while the other part of the class did writing. In library we played a game where there is two groups and the teacher says the first two sentences of a book. Then which ever team names the title of the book gets two points. Who ever wins gets a free bookmark. Our group won! In writing we worked on our Serra Club essays.
When that was over we packed up and got our backpacks.
“Today’s secret student is Kathleen D.!” Miss Cantillon announced.
Finally we went home.
Hello, my name is Makena M. and I am your Cantillon Chronicle reproter for today. We started the morning with one journal entry. I wrote about what I want to be when I'm older. The next thing we had was Spanish with Mrs.Pearla and we cut out paper animals and she said we had to write a sentence about the animals we cut. I cut out a gato (cat) and wrote I have a cat/gato. It was fun.
Then, we had DEAR which is drop everything and read. l read My Brother Sam Is Dead and it is by James Lincoln Collier and also by Christopher Collier. The book is about the American Revolution. I think it is a great book so far. In Reading, we learned about the authors of My Brother Sam Is Dead by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier. James was a children's author and Christopher was a professor for history so they made a book together. It was interesting. At 10:00 we did vocabulary scrips and that's when you make a play about the vocabulary words you learned. I was with Abby and Yasmin. It was really fun.
At 10:15 Miss Cantillon said that it was time for recess so I went out and double dutched with Julie, Kat, Abby, Yasmin, and Enissa. I did a lot the most I have down so far is 75. It is really fun. I am starting to get really good at it. When we went inside, we reviewed our states and capitals. My partner was Julie and we reviewed the Midwest States. We played it like tic tac toe so if you got it right you got to mark off an x or an o. Once we finished we had a math quiz. Our math quiz was kind of hard. The quiz was on division and we divided two numbers by three. That part is kind of easy.
Now we had lunch. I had a sandwich, apple, cheese its, and an orange. I had a good lunchtime and we double dutched again. I had so much fun. Following that was science with Mr.Jeanson. We went over our homework and I got a good grade. We also read our science book. We learned that land gets hotter faster then water and that land also gets colder faster then water. From 1:00 to 1:45 we had P.E. We played dodge ball. I was a winner for one game. Sammy won a lot of games. It was so much fun and I had a great time so did everyone else. In social studies I did state research on Massachusetts. Massachusetts is my state for the state fair. I got lots of information. I found out all the sports teams and stuff like that.
After that I reviewed my note cards in religion. I was partners with Tyler. I got a lot and so did Tyler. We will have a religion bee soon so we are studing. I think I'm doing really well.
Finally, she could not announce the secret student. How sad. Hey, look at the bright side its the end of the day. Now we can go home. That was today's Cantillon Chronicle.
Hi I am Pablo O. and I will be writing the Cantillon Chronicle for today March 1, 2007. At the beginning of the day the class had to write a Journal Entry on a cooperative person in our class. My Journal Entry was on Lance V. I wrote it on some nice stuff he sometimes does.
Then when the bell rang we finished up our Journal Entries, Miss Cantillon collected our journals, and gave us these Religion sheets. The Religion sheet was a calendar that said the dates of the year for Lent, Advent, Christmas, Easter time, Triduum, and Ordinary time. Those are the dates we celebrate mass on. But Religion class has never lasted long so now it was Math time.
During Math class we did some 5th grade math problems called Mountain Math. It’s called Mountain Math because the farther the problems the harder it gets. Once that was done the teacher let us do part of our math homework. Happily I knew we only had to say our vocabulary scripts now that math time had ended. My partner for the vocabulary script was Tyler Fleights; we did our script on a matrix dude and an immobile man.
RRRRRRRRRRING Yes! The recess bell just rung now the class and I can go to recess. “Pablo” the teacher called, “You have some late Homework to do.” “Oh no,” I said. Now I couldn’t have recess because I had to do my late homework on the New England states. Recess was a downer, but hey, at least I got to play like 5 minutes of ping-pong.
When recess finally ended because I knew that in a few hours lunch was coming up, and then I could play. But right now I had Grammar. We wrote down notes of all types of commas; one was the quoted language comma, but I have the definition on my notes.
Afterwards was Math, all we did was play a game called 24, there are 4 numbers, you can divide, subtract, multiply and add, and you have to get 24 with those 4 numbers. BBBBBBBBBeeeeeeeeep!! Lunch, yes!!!! Now I can play. I ate my lunch quickly and went to play ping pong. I played really good; I almost beat Talon who is a very good player because he plays tennis.
After lunch we read for 20 minutes. I‘m reading a book called Charlie’s Raven; it’s about a boy named Charlie who has a pet raven. Once the 20 minutes ended we had Literature class. All we had to do was read our 4 questions to the class that we did on a book called My Brother Sam is Dead.
Once we finished a visitor form The American San Diego Museum of Art came and showed us a slide show on Pictures and Portraits. I learned how hard it was back then for the early artist to go to school so most of them were dumb but, they still painted pretty good. But the visitor left pretty early so we went to Computer Class once she left.
In Computer Class we had to do research for our state report and write it down in note cards. I researched and wrote it down on note cards until Mr. Martin said to line up and go back to class. When we went back to class the teacher gave us two minutes of free time. In free time we can stand up in class, stretch, and talk.
Finally it was the last subject until the bell rang and school was out. We had to read our Serra Club Essays to the class, which is a four paragraph essay on what you want to be when you grow up and how, are you going to help people with that job. RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRring!! YYYYes!!!!!!!! School was finally out. Goodbye and thank you for reading my Cantillon Chronicle.
Hello all,I am going to tell you about our day today. In the morning we started Time for Kids. It was around 8: 00 a.m.We did not say our morning prayers because it was student of the month assembly. Westin and Ryan both received an award for our fifth gradeclass. We returned to class and finished Time for Kids.Then we had recess early, 9:30-9:45 a.m., because we also had masstoday. But lets stay focused on recess. All the girls played jump
rope as usual. After recess, it was time for computer class. We aredoing a power point on our states. I am doing the state of Utah.
It is time for mass because it is 10:30 a.m. Right after mass we returned to our classroom for the states and capitals quiz. Next, we did our buddy reading with the first graders. I got the star buddy reading award. Now it's the end of the day. Have a super weekend. See you next time!
Hi and welcome to the morning show, I am Enissa R. 5th grader at Stella Maris Academy in beautiful La Jolla, California. Today we are going to take an in depth look at a day in the life of a 5th grader.
This morning we had religion class. Since I do go to a Catholic school religion is apart of our everyday life. I have great faith in the Lord and have gone to Catholic school since I was in preschool. After religion was done we each took turns listening to each others vocation. I was very interesting to hear what everyone wanted to be when they grow up. I really believe that I need to make good decisions with my future. Next on our educational voyage is science. Now science is definitely a challenge for me, but that just means I study harder. There is a science quiz tomorrow, so I must be on my toes.
Later in the morning was vocabulary. There are lots of words to know. Then comes the best part of it all, RECESS!!!! After recess all the kids scramble into class like ants and it was time for music. I love music because it’s the best way to express yourself. We played the piano. Towards the end of the day was spelling, studying our state capitals. The best part of today was doughnuts in honor of Talon and Madison’s birthday. Hooray for birthdays!!!! There was also a piano recital today and we went to the hall for that. Hello! My name is Maddie V. and I am your Cantillon Chronicle Reporter for today, Friday, March 9th. Today was a half-day. That means we learn until noon, instead of 3:15 p.m.
First thing this morning we worked on a worksheet called “What’s the Point.” Next, Miss Cantillon checked our sticky notes in My Brother Sam is Dead book. After that, we had Science. First in Science Mr. Jeanson checked our homework and then he left.
Afterwards, it was time for Vocabulary. We worked on our skits. My partner was Abby. Abby and I finished our skit already. Following that, we had computers with Mr. Martin. We worked on our State PowerPoint presentation. My state is New York. Finally, it was recess. I played jump rope with my friends. It was very fun. Once that was done, we had P.E. We played Dodge ball. Once we finished, we had D.E.A.R. DEAR stands for, ‘Drop Everything and Read.’ When that was over, we had Buddy Reading. My buddy is Grace. After 11:30, Miss Cantillon announced who our star buddy reader was for the week, along with the Star Citizen and that was Julie! After packing up, we said prayer and were dismissed.
In the morning, we had Spanish. We did a work sheet that was easy but really long. I also got my test back and I got an ‘A’ on it. Then we had “Dear”. I am reading a book called ‘My Brother Sam Is Dead’. It is a pretty good book but I am still waiting for it to get my attention. Then we had Vocabulary plays. My partner and me called our plays the ‘Super Dummies’. We missed some of the lines but it turned out ok. Well, at least, I hope so! Afterwards, we had math where we were learning something new. I think I am struggling a little bit. After we had recess we played ping-pong.
…In the afternoon we had lunch, Art, and Science. We studied for a quiz. Next, we had library. Half of the class went into the library. We all had to search for some of the capitals. At the end of the day we packed up and went home to prepare for the family night. Our family can see us practice Math in new ways. It was fun!
When I got to school I practiced religion flash cards. Then we had Spanish. In Spanish we learned verbs. Then we had Dear (Drop Everything and Read) I read My Brother Sam is Dead. It’s a class book we had to read.
Then we started math. We did a math speed drill then we started a math work sheet called Mountain Math. Deacon Mark came in during that but once he left we started math homework. At Recess I played Double Dutch. It is pretty fun. The whole Gang is getting good at it.
When we came in from recess we started our spelling Activities. Every week we have to do activities on our spelling words. Later we went into computer and I did my note cards for my state report. At lunch we did the same thing as recess then we went in side and we had Science. In science we had a test I did well. Then he played silent ball.
Later we had P.E. in P.E. we played basketball. Then we went in side and we did more note cards. The teacher passed our pictures that we are drawing for a religion book we are making. Then it was the end of school! As They Say, “What A Day.”
March 15
Today felt really like a Friday versus a Thursday as we are having a student holiday tomorrow. I could feel everyone’s excitement about having Friday off from school.
We began today by completing our invitations for our 5th Grade State Fair. I really am looking forward to this event. We then had a religion bee. I was in the final round along with Pablo, Collin, Abby, Kathleen J., Yasmin, Makena, and Katie. First place was awarded to Kathleen J., second place was awarded to Yasmin, and Collin received third place. Kathleen J. said, “Yes, I won!” She was very excited about winning the bee. After the religion bee, we took our Unit 9 vocabulary test. There were some tough words in our unit this week. After the test, we enjoyed a short recess and snack.
After recess, we were given our weekly spelling test. This week focused on different states we have been studying along with the capitals located in those states. We then studied Math and did our 24 learning game. We enjoyed an extra long recess due to our excellent behavior over the past few weeks. All the students enjoyed the extra time to relax and have fun.
After lunch we did D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read). I really enjoy this and read the book My Brother Sam is Dead. We then reviewed a few students’ 4 questions assignment. We discussed many questions regarding this assignment. We then worked on our State presentation note cards. We continued working on our state project in computer class. We are all doing power point presentations for our class and parents. I am doing a presentation on the state of Alaska. I hope I can visit Alaska one day when I grow up. After computer class we worked on our walk through of the American Revolution. We split off in our groups and worked on our lines for the play.

Hi! My name is Collin and I’m the reporter for today!
We started the day off normally with a journal entry. I wrote about where I would explore if I could explore anywhere in the world. I chose Mt. Everest. After everyone was done with their morning work, we went into discussing the new grading system. Now, when we want to retake an assignment, we fill out a form saying what we did to study for it. Then we can retake it if she thinks we’re ready or not. Next we finished our pictures of the Stations of the Cross. Most people got to do a picture for there own station, but some of the kids had to share a station with another student. After that, Mr. Jeanson came in for our science class. In science right now, we our working on weather and why and how it happens. We did a work sheet on how they track down hurricanes and how they predict where they will hit. Then we had vocabulary. We started a review unit today on the past 4 units. They are long but they help us remember all the words. Next we had recess. All the boys played ping-pong which was really fun!
After recess, Mr. Amador (our music teacher) came to our room to give us a music test. The week before, he played all the songs and we wrote down how the made us feel. This week he played the songs and we looked at our notes to try and figure out what song it was. When music was over, we had time to work on our spelling activities. There are 8 we can choose from, but we only have to do 3. It is mandatory that we do activity #1 which is a spelling test on all of those weeks’ words. Finally, we got to go out to lunch. We played ping-pong again and it was still just as fun
When we came in, we had D.E.A.R. That stands for Drop Everything And Read. We read for half an hour. Right now, our class is reading a book called My Brother Sam is Dead. It is a great book about a family that s torn apart by the Revolutionary War. Sam (the older son) is a rebel and his father that is a loyalist. After that, we discussed what is going on in the book now and answered a few questions with our groups. Our next subject after that was math. Math is one of my favorite subjects. We didn’t do much because we only had half an hour for math today. We did our math speed drills, mountain math, and went over our homework. We also learned a cool math brain teaser. Here’s an example: 2 eights of what equals one whole. The answer is always the opposite of the fraction. In this case, the answer would be 8 halves. 8 halves = four. Two eighths = 1 fourth. One fourth of four is one. It gets easier after a while. Last we went into the computer lab to work on our State Reports. This is weird since we only have computer class on Thursday and Friday. After a long day of work, we finally pack up and go home.
Hi, I’m Tyler today in class we had Spanish and we were doing all are paper work that was handed out to us to do. Now we are done with Spanish and I wonder what is next on are to do list. Cool, it is dear time that is when we read silently to be self. Next, we are doing are literature with are brother Sam is dead books. That everyone in are class has. We were writing definitions in are books. Then, we had vocabulary with are partners. It was recess and I and my friends were playing ping-pong. We went inside and we had grammar, now we are watching a video. Everyone started dancing it was so horrifying to watch. Now we have math and we just did are speed drill. WE are now checking are homework. Wow, that was confusing!! Finally we have pizza lunch! We’re back and now it is art. We are now doing science with Mr.Jeanson. Next thing you know we are checking are homework. We are going to library and our class is doing something cool there. Afterward we went to computer to work on are power point. Finally school is over!
Today started out at 8:15 in the morning. For morning work everyone worked on organizing their desk for our State Fair. Our State Fair is tomorrow and everyone is trying their hardest to get everything cleaned. Then Miss Perla walked into the classroom to start Spanish.
Spanish started with a test. We were taking a test on verbs (verbs is VERBOS in Spanish). We all concentrated hard translating Spanish, writing verbs, and making the verbs correct for the sentence. That took a while but we all finished and turned our test in. I think a got a good grade on the Spanish test! Then we heard the door shut behind us all and turned to see Miss Cantillon ready to start the next subject, D.E.A.R.
DEAR was when everyone got to read their own book (DEAR means drop everything and read)! I read The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. It took around 13 minutes to completely finish my book. I was finished and we still had time so I took an AR quiz. AR is a program that we have for the whole school. What we have to do is earn a number of points to get a good grade for reading (everyone has different book levels and numbers of points they need to get). Then the timer rang just in time for me to finish (I got 10 out of 10). Soon we all took out our class novel, My Brother Sam is Dead. My Brother Sam is Dead is set in the time of the American Revolution in a small town near Redding, PA. We were discussing the concepts that were in MBSID. Some of the concepts that we discussed were Family Loyalty, Illusion of Glory, Identity, and Rebellion. Soon our literature classed finished and we all lined up for recess.
During recess the all the girls including me (Kathleen) joined together for dubble dutch. Dubble dutch is when you're jump-roping but with two jump ropes! We all had fun and ate our snacks and then sadly the bell rang for us to go into class to start Math.
First, in Math we had a multiplication speed drill which had 80 problems that you had to solve in 2 minutes. Two minutes passed and we took out our Mountain Math sheet and started to work on that. Around 10 minutes passed again, and we moved on to checking our homework. We finished checking our homework and Collin came up to explain a math game that he would teach us. We all worked together playing Kakuro and it made us think a lot. Collin finished explaining and helping us finish the puzzle he passed out and then Miss Cantillon found a new puzzle for us all to work on. Then everyone was dismissed to go out to lunch.
The girls all stayed in for lunch and we called it a Girls Lunch. During Girls Lunch we talked about everyone being special and kind. We all ate and talked about each other. For lunch I had an apple, some salad, and a piece of a homemade pizza. It was really fun until we looked at the clock and it said 12:00. Our lunch normally ends at 12:15 and it still does but we all wanted to go and play. We all played and had a blast until the bell rang for us to go upstairs for Science.
Mr. Jeanson came in to start our Science class. First in Science we checked our homework which was about hurricanes. We took around 15 minutes on that and then went on to read about tornadoes. We read for 16 minutes then started reviewing what we would have on our quiz on Friday. Science was not completely finished so we played a quick game of Silent Ball. In Silent Ball you have to get on your desk while throwing the ball to other classmates while being silent. Then Miss Cantillon walked in to watch over us until Mr. Gauy came in to let us go out for PE.
Mr. Gauy finally came in to tell us that we can go outside to start running. While we were running Mr. Gauy was passing out the basketball uniforms for the people on the basket ball team. Soon Mr. Gauy came to the PE yard to explain the game we were playing. We were playing a game where you had to throw basketballs in a line and make it into the hoop before the other person does. We all changed where we were in the PE yard. PE took around 30 minutes until Mr. Guay told us to go back in to our regular classroom. Then we had to go to our next subject--Social Studies.
In Social Studies, we weren't learning anything new, but we were getting ready for the State Fair by moving our desks around. We went over what we were going to be asked in the State Fair and made signs so the parents would know what to do. Miss Cantillon made sure that everyone knew what they were supposed to do, and had all of their supplements. The entire process of getting ready took about an hour, and then we had to pack up to leave school. Sadly, we all had to leave from a wonderful day.
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, we had to get to school by 8:15 and leave all of our backpacks and books outside to get ready for our State Fair. At 8:30, Miss Cantillon said, ”Let’s start our State Fair!” Parents came pouring in asking questions to everyone. I had brought in Maryland Chocolate Crab Cake and by the time the parents left and the class was allowed to eat some of the left overs (9:15), let’s just say that I had to hide a piece to save for myself before it finished! After that, we put our desks back in the right place. Next, we had recess.
After we came back from a great recess, we started our State Power Point presentations. First went Katie with Rhode Island and then Kathleen D with Alaska. Did you know that Rhode Island has a population in the millions even being one of America’s smallest states? We did a few more presentations and then went out to lunch.
When it was 12:45pm, I started my Maryland Power Point presentation. After my presentation, we went over to the Parish Hall to see a presentation on Antarctica. There were a lot of cool pictures of penguins, icebergs, and even a mumificated seal! After that marvelous presentation we had a few more presentations and then packed up to go home. Hi, I am Kathleen J. and I am here to report about what happened today, Tuesday, March 27, 2007.
For morning work, we caught up on our journal entries. After morning work, we played Bingo in our Spanish class with Senora Perla. It was really fun and we played it for the whole period. At the end of our Spanish class, we got back our tests from last week and I did a pretty good job on it.
After Spanish we went to church to have the sacrament of Reconciliation. We were there for about an hour. We waited for everybody in our class to get the sacrament and then we went back to class and started vocabulary. We worked on the review activities in our book with our 3 o’clock partners. We spent about 15 minutes doing vocabulary and then we finally went out to recess.
At recess I played double dutch like I always do with all of my friends. We had a lot of fun and then the bell rang and we had to go inside.
Once we got inside after recess, we listened to 2 state presentations. We learned about Texas and Oklahoma. I thought the PowerPoint presentations were very interesting and had a lot of facts that I did not know about those states. While we waited for our substitute teacher, we read for about 15 minutes.
At around 11:00, our substitute teacher came in because Ms. Cantillon had to go somewhere for a couple of hours. We had math and checked our homework. Then she let us work on homework that was due tomorrow so we do not have to do it tonight.
After we finished math, we went out to the senior yard for lunch.
I played double dutch again with all of my friends. When we went in from lunch, we went into the art room and had art class. In art class we worked on a collage. In our collage we drew a bird by using little pieces of magazine and paste the pieces on a bigger piece of paper. We spent most of our time doing our collage and then 5 minutes before we left we cleaned up the floor and our tables.
Next, we went back to the classroom and had science with
Mr. Jeanson. We played science jeopardy because we have a test tomorrow. Mr. Jeanson reviewed the material with the class. We were separated into 2 groups and started playing. When we finished my team got the most points. But since the game was really close we all got 5% more on our tests. Before Mr. Jeanson left he said, “Good Luck on the test tomorrow.”
After science, we went outside to practice our American Revolution presentation with our groups. We will have this presentation next Monday and it is when we are separated into 3 groups and we have to act out battle scenes, sing songs and recite our character cards. I think my group did really well together. Toward the middle of practice Ms. Cantillon came back.
Back in class we reviewed the essay that we are going to work on soon. It is called Character Matters. We have to write about what we think is the most important character trait to help us become better persons.
At around 2:00 we had one last state presentation which was on Kansas. This was also a very informative presentation and again learned a lot of facts on this presentation. At the end of the presentation, Ryan who represented Kansas played the state song “Home on the Range” on the piano. I think he played the song very well.
Finally, at the end of the day we wrote down our homework, packed up, prayed and went home. I hope you enjoyed reading my report. See you next time!
Hi, I’m Juliana Lopez and I am today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. We started our day off by either catching up on our journal entries, working on our portfolios or cleaning our desks.
Next we had Spanish. In Spanish we practiced our scripts about a family going on a picnic from last week and then we acted it out. We were split in two groups. Then we worked on two worksheets on animals. The first sheet we worked on showed us some different animals that you would only find in a zoo. It would show a picture of the animal and it had what it is in Spanish. Our job was to write what it was in Spanish. The second worksheet asked us to put the animals in groups according to what they have or eat. It also asked us questions.
Then we had DEAR for about twenty minutes. It gave us time to read My Brother Sam Is Dead with sticky notes or you could have also read any other book for Accelerated Reader. It also gave us time to write blogs on our class website or take Accelerated Reader quizzes.
After DEAR we had reading. In reading Miss Cantillon passed out a paper that had a timeline of the American Revolution. We looked at the dates on the timeline to see if we were familiar with any of them and then we talked about it. Then Miss Cantillon showed us a website about the American Revolution and we took notes in our reading notebook about the important events of it. Then she showed us another website that quizzed us on it, but we didn’t have time to finish.
Recess! It was finally time for recess where we could eat our snacks and play. The girls played double-dutch while the boys played ping-pong.
When that was over we had spelling. During spelling we got to work on our spelling activities and study the states and capitals with our friends.
During math we started off with our speed drill. We had a division one today. Then we started working on a new mountain math. Next we went over our project directions for making our dream bedroom. Then we were running out of time so we had to hurry and check our homework.
Next we had lunch. Food! Finally we got to eat and play again.
Then we had science. I got scared because we had to take a huge test today. It was about the Earth’s weather. Once everyone finished their test we graded them.
After science we had P.E. We warmed up by running around the yard touching each blue pad in order. Then some of us played knock out while Mr. Guay showed some of the kids how to shoot the ball. He got to work with everyone. When time started to run out he made us run around the P.E. yard one more time. Then we got a drink, went to the bathroom, washed our hands, and went up the stairs back to class.
When P.E. was over Yasmin taught us how to play Mental Math Medly. She passed out two worksheets and went over what to do on one of them. Then we played a game on the internet. It was called Speed Grid Challenge. Next on the second worksheet she called out a number and whatever number it was, was the number of the problem that we had to do on our sheet. We worked with our table for this. Yasmin did a very good job teaching the class. Well done Yasmin!
During social studies we worked with our American Revolution groups and practiced. “Whatever group I think works the best today will get an award. Each person in the group will get ten scholar dollars!” said Miss Cantillon. The blue team won which is my group.
Finally we wrote down our homework, packed our bags, did our jobs and went home. Sadly the secret student could not be announced today.
Hi! I am Pablo O. and I will be writing the Cantillon Chronicle for Friday, March 30 2007. Well since it is a Friday the school ends at 12:30 so this will be a short Chronicle. The first thing that happened at school in the morning was that we unpacked and did this paper on some news called What’s The Point. After that we said our morning prayers.
Then the next subject was Science. We reviewed our test scores and I got a 91% which is pretty good. The Science teacher Mr. Jeanson told us about the next lesson which took a while. Then the last thing that we did in Science was that Mr. Jeanson explained our H.W. to us.
After Science we had social studies which we practiced for our play on the American Revolution. We divided the class into some groups my group is the red team. We practiced the Star Spangled Banner, Our play and our character cards. I think that I memorized all my parts well enough.
Social studies lasted for about 1 to 1 and a half hours. When it ended we went to the computer lab to finish our State recipes. My state is Colorado so my recipe is Trappers’ fruit. But I was almost done and when I finished I started doing this movie thing with my friend Westin. Since half the class was still doing their state recipe we were aloud to fool around a little with the movie thing and then it ended.
Then the best subject was next. Recess! I played a little ping pong, then Knock out, and then dodge ball. Dodge ball was the funnest of the three. I got to play against the 6th graders. But unfortionaly recess only lasted for 15 minutes so it ended pretty quickly. When recess sadly ended we had to go in and take our States and Capitals test. I think I got a 100%.
Then like at 12o-clock we went over to the first grade to buddy reading for like 15 minutes. Then we went back to the class the teacher announced Star-Citizen, and student of the day. Finally after that we packed up and went home. Thank for reading my Cantillon Chronicle.
Hi and welcome to the Enissa Morning Show. Today we are going to take a trip back in time when I was 11 years old. There you are going to see what my day was like when I had school.
To start off with the day we started our journal entries and I wrote my entries on my mom and dad’s wedding last Friday! Once that was done we went on to the Characters Matters’ essay and wrote what made us a good character. Then we moved on to D.E.A.R. That is when you read silently for 20 min. Once that was over we got to gout to recess! We played Double-Dutch! After we had spelling and studied our States and Capitals until it was time for math. Math is so much fun because we do all neat things like Mountain Math and a lot of fun math games too. Once that was over we got to move on to lunch!! I had to study for our Science test. Finally we had Science and that was our test I was studying for at lunch. At 2:00 we had P.E. and ate Root-Beer Floats. I was soo excited for this part because that was our Easter Party and we went on a Easter Egg hunt, Ate all sorts of goodies, And last but not least Tug-of-War against the BOYS! Then we had the Egg walk were who ever gets to the line first wins! Finally it was time to go home so we packed up our bags wrote down our home work and walked out the door to go home. Hello, my name is Justin S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today. First, we all started writing in our morning journals. I wrote about the pets I like the most, my two fish. Then we each shared the journal entire we wrote on spring vacation
Next, Ms. Cantillon handed out the AR awards from quarter 3; Katie, Kathleen J., Enissa, Madison, Lance, Pablo, Collin, and we all shared with the class on how we would do better. And I said;” I will get better grades.”
Our Science teacher is Mr. Jeanson. In his class today we did an experiment on how asteroids make bigger craters on the moon’s surface from father distances away. Then we went over the homework for tonight.
After that we started our vocabulary skits. I worked with Sammy. Our skit is about two police officers trying to catch these two culprits for a long time…..We will finish our class skits on Wednesday.
Then we had recess. I played “four square” with my other friends. We had so much fun.
After that we had music and practiced our scales. (According to our music teacher we are going to have a test next Monday.) I am doing pretty well and I think the whole class will ace it too.
Next we had spelling. We went over the Mountain West States and capitals. There are 8 states in that region.
Next we had lunch. We played “four square” again.
Then, we had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) I am reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It is a really good book and I also wrote a book recommendation blog.
Math was next. First we practiced 2 minute math. We checked our homework from last night and then reviewed lesson one on using a ruler to measure different objects. After that we received our homework which is due tomorrow.
Last but not least we had social studies and Miss Cantillon told us that we have to draw a picture of the state we chose for the state recipe book we are making.
In the morning the teacher asked us to get out a book when we were waiting for Mrs. Hauser to come in a classroom for the first time and teach us about business. She gave us a test that we also take in six weeks to see how much we improve. I thought it was easy except for one question I wasn’t sure what it meant. Then she gave us one workbook about business. We read a few pages, it mostly was talking about partnerships, corporation, sole proprietorship, and entrepreneurs. After we made a play of someone started a business of car fixing and got a cashier a mechanic a lot of other things and then business got good and they made an other place and got a cashier, mechanic, etc. and soon they got a CEO and that was me. That play was meant to teach us how to start a business and what you need and so on .Then she left and we were done with that.
And then NO tax day, the teacher told us about this on the first day of school this year. On tax day we have to fill in a form about how many awards and tardy slips we got ,if we did our jobs ,kept our desks clean etc. bad we loose scholar dollars and if we did good we got some. I was nervous. But I filled it in and got some, not that many but some. After that the teacher talked about one of our projects we are working on it called dream bedroom she showed mine and some one else’s diagram to give us feed back and also remind the class to do it the right way.
Then we did grammar and practiced the adj. song the whole class sang it two times and then we had a contest by table I had a hunch that we would win. We all sung and then voted and then… WE WON!!! So we each got a candy all of our table got lollipops. After we had lunch but not just lunch PIZZA LUNCH!!! I got a salad, a bread stick, a pop up popsicle thing, a juice, and of course a pizza, then when we were done eating we went to the play yard and me and my friend played ping pong. After lunch we went strait to art in art we made a colleague of birds by cutting magazines and gluing them. After art we had science we were studying planets and the science teacher told us to read a page out loud when they did everyone laughed every time someone said sputnik. Later in science class the science teacher asked ,“What planets can you sometimes see with the naked eye?” (Causing laughter everywhere).
Then we had honor roll there were twice as many honor students as last quarter and she also gave awards to people in the 100% homework club. At the end there were only 6/22 who didn’t get awards and I was one of them. And that concludes a very rare day.
Hello! My name is Maddie V. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter for Today, April 18, 2007. First we worked on a journal entry about Stewardship. Stewardship is when you serve others before yourself. Next, we had Spanish and worked on a worksheet with Senora Perla.
Then, we had D.E.A.R, which stands for ‘Drop Everything and Read.’
I finished a really good book that the whole class is reading, My Brother Sam is Dead written by James Collier and Christopher Collier.
After D.E.A.R, we watched a movie about the American Revolution. It was very exciting! When the movie was over, we worked on our Vocabulary Scripts with our partners.
Finally, it was recess time. I sat at the lunch table and thought about how to make my vocab script better. Following recess, we got a chance to work more on our Vocabulary Scripts. Once that was done, we worked on our Spelling Activities. We are learning the Mountain West States and Capitals. These are the states we are learning are. Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.
Once we finished, we had a division speed drill. That’s where we get a sheet with division problems and we have to finish the equations in 2 minutes or less with a score of 100%. Then we learned about Capacity in Math. Capacity is measured in ounces, gallons, pints, quarts and cups.
Once we finished math, we had lunch! I played soccer with my friends. It was very fun because we kept on getting great shots. We tied the game. Then the bell rang it was time for Science!
In Science class, we read some of our pages from a textbook. We learned about Spacesuits, and Space exploration. It was very exciting to read about Space.
When that was over, Mr. Guay our P.E. teacher came in and gave us a few handouts, and then we went outside to play a very fun game named “Germs.” So what you do is there are 4 teams, red, yellow, blue, and white. There are also 2 doctors who can send you to germ jail if you get tagged. There is also 1 other kind of a germ, the Black Germ! The black germ can’t get sent to germ jail but he can rescue the first 2 people out of jail if the black germ gets to the wall and back safely. P.E. was very fun.
In Social Studies, we drew our map for our states so it can go in our 2007 5th Grade Recipe book. My state is New York, and I am doing Pizza for my recipe.
Then we had Writing. We worked on our Good Character Essay. That is where we have to write about what Good Character means to you. To me, good character is friendship.
Finally, it was time to pack up and go home. What an exciting day!
First we did our journal entry. And I did mine about going to six flags to get my children to eat their vegetables. Then we went over our map of the bedroom I did mine wrong so I re did mine. After that we did Westin’s game for math Then we went out to recess and I played nock out And then we went back in and did our vocab scripts And corrected our math home work and played 24 and went out to lunch and read during then we went over our 4 questions and the topic was My Brother Sam is Dead. Then we worked on our state books and as you may know, I did mine on Texas and after that we went home.
We started our day off with a class with Mrs. Hauser. We learned about job interviews. We got to do our job interviews with a person at your table. WE did a bad interview then a good interview.
Then, we had science with Mr. Jeanson. I took a quiz because I was absent when the class took it. Then we went over the test that we will have on Wednesday.
Later, we had vocabulary. We only went over the vocab. Words for unit 10. Tonight’s homework for that is we have to draw pictures that describe each word.
After that, we had recess. I took my math quiz since I was absent when they took that too.
We went inside the music room and had a little Piano-playing test. I feel that I did pretty well.
Then we went back to our classroom to do spelling. We had to fins some things that they listed for the region that we are studding for this week,
Later on, we had a little contest. A girls against boys contest. We had to see who sang the adjective song the best. The girls won! (What a butiful voice I have!)
After that, we went out to lunch. I got a sandwich from wine barrel. Then when I was done I double dutched with the gals.
Then, we went in and had D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read) I finished The Horse And His Boy. What a great story. Then I took an AR quiz. (A reading quiz) Then some people read My Brother Sam is Dead out loud.
Later, we had math. We did a math speed drill then went over mountain (a math sheet we have to do every week) then we got to so our dream bedroom project to some one at your table.
After that, we worked on our state drawing. We had to choose a state then do a report on it then do a recipe then now were doing the state drawing to go with the recipe.
We had a class with Mr. Poon on geometry with jewelry. He is a true jeweler. As They Say “What A Day!”
Today, Tuesday, April 24, 2007 was a very exciting day at Stella Maris Academy. Today marked the first day of The Book Fair. This time it was themed as a beach. I remembered to bring my wallet so I could purchase a book. I bought a book named Kiss Me Tomorrow, by Susan Shreve. I also bought some erasers that are scented.
Our school day began in a very normal way and our morning assignment was to update our portfolios. I really enjoyed Spanish class today as we learned Spanish through playing a game called BINGO. Tyler and Pablo were the winners in the Spanish Bingo game. Madison said, “I was only two away from winning!” The winners got a treat. Once the fun was over, we needed to count all the workbook sheets we completed.
The next subject is one of my favorites. D.E.A.R, which stands for, Drop Everything and Read. We had D.E.A.R. for about twenty-five minutes. Most students read but a few students take Accelerated Reader tests.
Recess was extra special today as we had 5 extra minutes. The weather was perfect and you could go to The Book Fair during recess. What a treat! After recess we had our adjective quiz. We had to fill in the blanks to a song we had memorized that had to do with different adjectives. This was harder than I thought.
In Math class we worked on our Dream Bedroom projects. This has been a very interesting project. After Math class we had our lunch period. Today after lunch we had art class. I really like art and creating things.
We had Jeopardy Science review today. My group, named, The Odds, won and received the prize of an additional 5% on our Science test. To end our day we had library, where we once again got to browse The Book Fair.

Hi, it’s Collin and I’m your reporter today! In the morning, we usually write a journal entry, but today, we worked on our portfolios which we keep papers in to see our progression in our work over the course of the year. Every quarter, we have a few days in the morning to do this. We put in any papers that show how you improved, what you want to work on, and what you want to remember. Right after that, Senora Perla came in to teach us Spanish. Today we did thee papers where we had to match the word in English to the word or phrase in Spanish. They were pretty challenging, but they were still fun. When she left we had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Right now I am reading the Series Of Unfortunate Events books. It is a very exiting series (13 books) and I recommend it to everyone. We had 20min. to read and then we had a special social studies class. We got with partners to start a new assignment. I was paired with Lance. We chose an event from the Revolutionary War and filled out a sheet with different facts about it. We chose the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a little confusing when it asked us how many men were killed or wounded in this event. Tomorrow we are going to write a newspaper article with this information from either a loyalist or a rebel point of view.
Next we went out to recess. I played with my best friends and we had a great time. When we came in, we worked on our spelling activities. We do these every week. There is a list of 8 different activities. We use that weeks spelling words and do the first one, which is mandatory, and two others of our choosing. I did the first one, #3 which is writing all the words, but you have to write the syllables in different colors, and the last one which is very fun to do. You go online to www.edhelper.com/crossword.htm and type in all the words to make a crossword puzzle. Next we had math but I’m sorry to say I can’t tell you much about it because I had to go to band practice. Every week the different instruments go at different times so we don’t always miss the same class, but this week I went at a time where I missed math.
After math, everyone went out to lunch. We ate lunch and then since it is Wednesday, we got to play on the dance mat in our classroom. About six people go every week and I went this week! After lunch, we went in to have science. We had a science test today, but our science teacher wasn’t here today so our normal teacher gave it to us. When we had about 5 minuets left, our usual science teacher came in and graded it with us. I hope everyone did well. After that we had P.E. Right now in P.E., we are playing a fun game. Everyone gets either a red, blue, yellow jersey but some don’t get one and they are the white team because our shirts are white. There are two people who call out colors and try to tag the people of that color. The people in jerseys have to run to the wall and back without getting tagged. If you get tagged, you are out. There is one person with a black jersey and if they make it back without getting tagged, two people get back in. the last two people with jerseys left are the taggers for the next round. After that, we worked on the picture of our state. It is the picture that will be next to our recipe in our state recipe book. Every one did a project on a state and we are all putting our state recipe into a book. Everyone in the class can get one if they pay for it. I know that I will buy a copy. And last, we worked on our film futures essay. We are writing a story and there is a contest and the best story writer gets a prize. Last year it was an iPod video. We just started and right now we are working on making up characters. Then it was three-o-clock and everyone was happy that the school day was over.
We started the day with our journal entries. Then we had film features. We learned about description, are characters, and personalities. After wards we did our math speed drill and I got only 58 correct, there's no speed when it comes to breaking your arm. Then we did mountain math. That is when we do math problems for a certain amount of time. Next we worked on our patriot/British newspapers articles. I did the Boston Massacre. Finally, "we had recess! " Sadly, I hurt my arm and I couldn't do much of anything. After recess we finished our newspaper articles. Then we played 24. 24 is a game where you have four numbers on a card; you can use division, multiplication, addition and subtraction to equal 24. Then we had lunch, great! I got people to sign my cast. We went back inside and had d.e.a.r. I read Storm Breaker for 20 minutes. We did ready with our partner Talon. We read chapter 4 in Our Brother Sam is Dead book. We were working on our movie. Afterward we worked on our state receipts and my state is Oklahoma. It is shaped liked a pan handle. Then we went to computers. Talon said, "my bro Sam in dead!" We worked on our film for 30 minutes. Then finally it was time to go home!! Oh yea!!
Today started at 8:15 in the morning. For morning work we had to write about the Time for Kids article that Miss Cantillon gave us. The article was about health and insurance also the cost of checkups, broken bones, and strep tests. Then Mr. Jeanson walked in to get us ready for Science.
During Science we got our test passed back and I got 100%! In Science we learned about the sun energy and how it affects Earth. Did you know that coal is made by plants? Today was a half day so Science was not as long then it normally was. Then Miss Cantillon walked back into the classroom meaning that Spelling was starting.
Today we had our Spelling test on the pacific states. I think I did pretty well. That took around 15 minutes for me to finish my test so I started to read my book Kiki Strike Inside the Shadow City. We don’t have D.E.A.R. on Friday (D.E.A.R. means drop everything and read) so Miss Cantillon let us read till Computer class.
In Computer class we were practicing are movies for MBSID (MBSID means My Brother Sam Is Dead). MBSID is our class novel and for part of our test we need to do. We each got partners and mine was Madison. When we were done Mr. Martian, our computer teacher, told us it was time for us to go back to our home room classroom. When we went back Miss Cantillon told us we should line up for Recess.
When we were dismissed for Recess I went to our school Book Fair. The Book Fair comes about 3 times a school year. It was held in the Library. I bought three books called Sea of Monsters, Theodore Roosevelt, and May Bird. Theodore Roosevelt was for Miss Cantillon. Sadly we heard the bell ring and we had to go back inside for Writing.
During writing we worked on our Film Future essay. Mine was about two twin sisters that have grown up in the city and are true uptown girls. But one day their mom looses her job and they have to the city where the rest of the family live. That ended when Mr. Guay came in for P.E.
Mr. Guay told us to take off our sweatshirts and line up at the blue benches in the P.E. yard. We started to run for about 11 minutes. Then Mr. Guay told us to get the color jersey we needed, I needed red. We were playing the game called Germs. Germs is where you have two doctors and the other classmates are germs. We played for about 30 minutes until Mr. Guay told us to go to our home room classroom. When we came back we started to work on writing again until we had to go to our 1st grade buddies.
When we went to our buddies I sat done with my buddy, Eileen. Today instead of reading I wanted to tell my buddy how much fifth grade writes. So I wanted for her to write a page about her favorite stuff animal which was Mintey (the stuff animal Mintey was a tiger that I gave her). Sadly before we could finish Miss Cantillon told us that we needed to go home. When we got back we got packed up and leave after a wonderful day.
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, everyone got to school holding a big or little cardboard box that was our Dream Bedroom project. We did our morning work and then Miss Cantillon said, “Mrs. Howser is now here for Junior Achievements!” Our activity for today was making as many pens as we could in two minutes (we were learning about unit and massed production). We also watched a movie on the making and advertisement of a CD. As Mrs. Hauser left, Miss Cantillon said, “Let’s see Kat’s Dream Bedroom!” we also saw Maddie (2nd) and Abby’s (3rd) project and then went out to recess.
After an enjoyable recess, we had music where we learned major and minor chords on the key board. Once again, we had Dream Bedroom projects. But this time, mine (1st), Talon (2nd), Jason (3rd), Ennissa (4th), Makena (5th), and Kathleen D (6th), projects. Just when I was about to starve to death, the lunch bell rang.
After our loud, noisy lunch, it felt nice to sit down and have a nice, quiet DEAR. I’m reading a book called The Lightning Thief . The timer went off which meant it was time for us to finish My Brother Sam is Dead book as a group. “Time for a multiplication speed drill!“ Math was up next. Today, I finally got 100% on my speed drill! We went over time units of measurements and finally tried to finish the pages to our State Recipe Book. Hello my name is Samuel H. and I will be your reporter for today. Today we shared our dream bedrooms to the class. Then we picked one president to study. Soon we had junior achievements. We learned about how to make things in manufacturing like making pens and watched a movie about how to build a CD. Then we had vocab. After, we went to recess. I played ping-pong with some boys and others played either knockout or jump roping after we got our president books. Finally when we got back in we sang the adjective song. Next we continued working on our grammar books. It was pretty easy thanks to the two songs we learned. Then we went onto music. We learned and practiced chords. Then we went to lunch. I played knockout with the boys and the girls played jump rope. Then we read our books. I am reading the series of Eragon. Soon we went onto math. We Practiced problems like 12:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M. After that we continued reading our president books. Then we finished sharing our Dream bedrooms. Today was great day because very exciting! I hope you have a thrilling week!
Hello, my name is Ryan, and I will be your reporter for today! First up, we have Spanish, we played a game called pasa pasa. After that we had D.E.A.R., we read for about 25 min. Then we had had literature circles and we talked about the book we were reading. A few min. later…we had Vocabulary. We worked on our completing the sentences. 15 min. later…RECESS! WOOT! We went out and played ping-pong. After that we had Spelling, we practiced our states and capitals. Then we had math, and checked our homework and were working on word problems. Our Science teacher was a camp, so we worked more on our states and capitals.
Next we have P.E. we are playing a fun game called germs. Next we have social studies. We worked on our state recipe books. And finally we had religion. And that’s the end of todays report! See ya!
Hi, my name is Kathleen J. I am here to report on what happened today, Thursday, May 3, 2007. Today, the first thing we did in class is write a journal entry for morning work. After we wrote our journal entries, we had some people read their journal entries and had some people tell the class what we fixed in our journal entry. For example, people fixed choppy sentences and undescriptive words.
After reading our journal entries, we played a game called “Let’s Make a Deal!” My name was called 3 times and I got three pieces of candy.
When “Let’s Make a Deal!” was over, we had 15 minutes to organize our desks and binders. I helped some of my classmates because my desk and binder were pretty much organized already.
Afterwards, we had math. The first activity we did is a two minute multiplication speed. Next, we had five minutes to do Mountain Math where we have a math worksheet with 24 problems and we try to solve and complete the sheet in two weeks. I helped my classmates on problems that they did not get. When we finished Mountain Math, we checked our homework that was due today. We also reviewed the next lesson in our math for our homework due on Monday.
After math, we worked on our vocabulary activities for unit 10 with our 10 o’clock partner. We were working on completing the sentences and moving on to the next activity when the timer went off and we had to go back to our seats.
Following vocabulary, we had recess. I played double dutch with my friends. Our teacher gave us 15 minutes extra recess so we got to stay out until 10:30 a.m. Then we had to go back inside the classroom.
When we got back inside, we reviewed the fifty states and capitals.
I was with five of my friends and we took a place mat with all the states and capitals and filled them in with a marker. We also checked each others spelling and locations to make sure we got them right. We spent about 15 minutes writing the states and capitals where they belong.
Once we were finished, we moved on to the math game “24.” We had two 15 minute rounds and I stayed at the top table for both rounds.
When we finished the two rounds of “24” it was time for lunch. I played double dutch again with all of my friends. When lunch was over we went back inside.
Once inside, we had D.E.A.R. I read a book called Maroo of the Winter Caves. I am really enjoying the book so far. We read for about 25 minutes.
When D.E.A.R. was over, we met with our literature circles group.
My literature circle group is reading a book called Jackie & Me. Our group discussed what happened in the first 3 chapters of the book for about 15 minutes. We talked about what words were difficult in the passage that we read, a part in the book where we can draw it, and what we found interesting in our book. After our discussion was over we had an extra 5 minutes to put the homework sheets that we did and filed it in our group binder.
Right after literature circles, we worked on our president research. The president I am studying is Franklin D. Roosevelt. We got a large envelope to keep all of our research and decorated it with our president’s name, our name and a sketch of our president. We also got a research sheet to fill out important information. Miss Cantillon also showed us good sources to use for our president research.
After doing our president research, we went into the computer lab to record our interview for My Brother Sam is Dead final project. Julie and I practiced recording our interview before doing the final recording. But we did not have enough time to record our interview with Mr. Martin (our computer teacher). Also, Mr. Martin asked Julie and I to help him fix the interview set in the classroom and we said, “Sure, Mr. Martin, we will help you.”
For our last subject, we spent 15-20 minutes writing our Film Futures contest essay. This contest is where we have to write a fiction story about any subject and it has to be at least 3-5 pages long. My story is about an African-American girl who moved to Chicago because her parents were divorced and some unkind girls in her new school teased her. At the end of the story, she became less sensitive and did not care what other people thought about her.
Finally at the end of the day, we wrote down our homework, packed up our things, prayed and went home. I hope you enjoyed reading my chronicle. See you next time!
Hi, I’m Juliana L. and I am today’s Cantillon Chronicle Reporter. We started off our day by reading Time For Kids. There was an article in the Time For Kids that everyone was talking about. It was about a guy saying that kids get too much summer vacation. Then we completed our What’s the Point.
Next we went to the student of the month assembly. Congratulations to Enissa, Tyler, Lance, and Talon. We then practiced our positions for May Crowning on Monday. It only took like two minutes.
When we came back to the classroom we finished working on our What’s the Point sheet. We tried to finish it so we didn’t have to do it over the weekend.
After that we had our big test on the states and capitals for all fifty. Miss Cantillon gave us to sheets. One sheet was numbered 1-50. The other sheet had a map of the United States outlining and numbering each state. You were to look at the map and find a state you know, look at what number it was, and write down the state and capital next to the same number on the other sheet. When you hand it to Miss Cantillon she checked the spelling, the capitals, and she looked to see if it was where it was supposed to be. If you didn’t get 100% you have to retake it until you do.
When that was over we had DEAR for about 20 minutes.
Then we had recess. Most of the kids in our class played either knock-out or double-dutch.
At about 10:45 we reviewed our answers for Mountain Math with our table real quick and then we took a class photo for our state recipe books. Miss Cantillon took two normal pictures of us and then we got to take one silly picture.
Next we had P.E. We played germs for about 30 minutes.
When we came back we finished reviewing our Mountain Math and then went off to buddy reading. During buddy reading we read books with our first grade buddies. We said goodbye and went back to our classroom at about 12:15.
Miss Cantillon then announced that Tyler was star buddy reader, Collin was star citizen, and Katie was secret student. “And the winner of the secret student drawing is Kat!” announced Miss Cantillon.
Finally we packed our backpacks and went home.
Hello, I am Makena M. and today we started with a journal entry about Junior Acheivement Mass and Unit production. It was simply easy.
The Next thing we had was the wonderful May crowning. We all had to wear our Sunday best. I thought everyone looked really good. All the classes sang one "Hail Mary." We tried to sing them as loud as we could.
Then we had Mass following the May crowning. It was a very a good mass and the choir sang really well. It was held by the eighth graders since they were graduating soon.
Once we were done, we had fifteen minutes of recess. We played bump. It was really fun! I won a round against the boys. Bump is a basketball game when you try to shoot the basketball before the other person gets it in the hoop.
After, we had Math. In math we did Moutain math were you solve all of these problems that you should know by fifth grade. We also went over our homework and did a multiplication math speed drill so you can inprove on your multiplication facts. We had lunch right after and we played bump again. I didn't win but that is okay. You don't have to win all the time. At 12:15 we had D.E.A.R, which is drop everything and read. I took an accelerater reading quiz on Carnival of Candlight. It is a really good book and I got a 100% on it which is great.
After DEAR we had literature circle groups. My group is Juliana, Katie, and Madison. We are reading Sounder a really good book but it is very sad. During that time we discussed what the book was about. At 1:45 we did character interviews for My Brother Sam Is Dead. We are doing a movie about it and I think it will turn out really cool.

I am Manci R. and I am reporting on today's day, May 9, 2007.
In the morning, we began our morning journal. Then Senora Perla came in to teach us Spanish. We are going to have a test next Tuesday on this subject. I do not think we are looking forward to that. Right after Spanish, we had D.E.A.R. Then it was time for literature circles. Justin, Ennisa, and Westin are in my group and we are all reading a book called Chocolate Fever. Later, Deacon Mark came into our class to talk about God. Next was vocabulary and my partner was Tyler. We began writing our skits.
The recess bell rang and we all went out to play. The girls played jump rope and the boys played knock out. When we returned to class we did spelling and worked on our spelling activities. Then we corrected our math homework and moved onto Mountain Math.
We had our lunch break and played in the playground after. When lunch was over, we had science class with Mr. Jeanson. We discussed sun spots and solar flares. He let us know about an upcoming quiz on Friday. At 1:00 p.m. Mr. Guay came into our classroom and talked about girls' basketball. The Jr. Varsity team is doing pretty well this season! Next was P.E. class and we had relay races with little blue scooters. That was a lot of fun.
We returned to class and talked about the President reports. Miss Cantillon gave us extra recess for fifteen minutes. Definitely the best part of the day. The first bell rang at 3:00 p.m. and we packed our backpacks, said prayers, and went home.

Hi, we are live at Stella Maris Academy reporting a baseball game on a typical day in 5th grade with Miss Cantillon. First batting is J.A. or Junior Achievement. In class we learn how to start a business or someday even own one. It’s just a tip on how to get an idea for the up coming feature. In J.A. we are going to be learning about how to make great progress for money and business making. Second batting is math. In math we are taking a math test, like +7 + +5=+12 or -7+ +4=-3. Stuff like that. Then check our math homework from last night.
Once after that we have twenty-four. Twenty-four is a game when you have four numbers that make up twenty-four. Next up batting is vocabulary. In vocabulary we are writing scripts. We have clock partners that we go with to do our scripts. Finally we have recess. At recess we love to play double-dutch! We do a lot of neat things and tricks. Once after that we take a little break and relax. Next batter up is Lunch. We do the same thing at lunch, play double-dutch. My teacher says “Oh, before I forget, be nice and respect people as you would to your parents.” Then at first base is dear. I never used to like dear but now I do.
Did you know that you learn a lot more by reading? Let’s say that you read a book on plants, the next day you finish the book and when you go to school your science teacher asks you if a flower is a vascular plant then you would say yes. You would also know that moss is a plant, but not a vascular plant. Reading is important. Next batting for third base is Reading. Reading is like Dear but we have literature circles. “It Circles” is a book assigned to you and you have to read the book and answer the paper that you get with the assignment. Right now we’re reading “Chocolate Fever” base is Social Studies. In Social Studies we are doing a presidents project. That’s hard because sometimes you try and find info about him, but you just can’t seem to find it.
Home is computer class. In class we are making movies and Mother’s Day cards. I love Mother’s Day it just makes me happy and joyful inside. Let’s play one more round of baseball. First up at base 1 is writing. In writing we are learning punctuation and also writing a film futures story. Holy cupcakes we hit a Grand Slam! We made two homeruns. Now we’re going home. Hello, my name is Jason S. and I will be your reporter for 5-11-07. The first thing we did today was what the point, time for kids is. I got done early so I did some AR reading. After that Mr. J (Mr. Jeanson) came in for science. Also in science we had a science quiz I missed 1 question. When Mr. J left we had our spelling test for states and capitals but only for the people that didn’t get 100% the first time. I think I got 100% this time.
Then we went into the computer lab for computer class. We are currently working on the summaries with our partners for My Brother Sam Is Dead book chapters. Afterwards we all went out to recess. I got to go out first because I am ball-basket. When all of us boys got onto the field we all yelled, “knockout.”
Next we all went back in to our classroom and it was time for vocabulary skits. When it was time for Westin and I to come up and do our skit everyone laughed. After vocab. Mr. Guay came in and had everyone go out side and line up in front of the PE yard. He separated our class into 3 teams and we had a relay race with these flat scooter things it was really fun.
When PE was over we had D.E.A.R. I am currently reading Fire Star I really like the book so far.Then we went to the first grade class for buddy reading. I read three books to my buddy called The Dumb Bunnies. My buddy really liked them she was laughing up a storm.
Then we all went back to our class and went home.
Hello, my name is Justin S. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today. First, we all started writing rough drafts of our letters to Sister Mary. I finished half of my rough draft.
Next, Ms. Cantillon handed out the AR awards from April; Abby, Kathleen D., Collin, Yasmin, Sammy, Kathleen J., Makena, Pablo, Enissa, Jason, Madison and we all shared with the class on how we would do better. And I said;” I will get better grades.”
Our Science teacher is Mr. Jeanson. In his class today we went over all the planets and where they go in our solar system and the asteroid belt and different moons. Then we went over the homework for tonight.
After that we had vocabulary, Miss Cantillon would call on people to read a word from the book along with the definition of the word than the whole class drew illustrations for each word. We will finish the illustrations at home.
Then we had recess. I played “knock out” with my other friends. We had so much fun.
After that we had music and played a music game on the computer that involved remerging different kinds of interments. I am doing pretty well and I think the whole class is doing pretty good on the game to.
Next we had spelling. We went played states and capitols bingo we played three rounds regular bingo four corner bingo and l shaped bingo. There are 8 states in that region.
Next we had lunch. We played “knock out” again. Then, we had D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) I am reading Chocolate Fever by: Robert Kimmel Smith. It is a really good book and I also wrote a book recommendation blog on it. Math was next. First we practiced 2 minute math. We checked our homework from last night and then reviewed for the test on Friday. After that we received our homework which is due tomorrow.
Last but not least we had social studies and Miss Cantillon told us that we have to work on our president report for the rest of the day I worked on my research cards. Then we packed up and went home!!
The morning was really chatty. I came in late but not too late. After morning work and journal righting, we had Spanish. We were studying verbs (verbos in Spanish). When we finished Spanish we had DEAR (drop everything and read). I was reading an OK book called Pedro’s Journal. I would recommend it for people age 9-13 who like adventure. It’s kind of a short book but that’s OK. At the end of DEAR I almost finished it. Then after DEAR we had recess, at recess I really quickly finished the book and took an AR (accelerated reader) Quiz on Pedro’s journal. After recess we did some grammar (I kind of missed it because I had to copy something that I missed yesterday in grammar because I had to go to the dentist in the morning). Then we had P.E. in P.E. a lot of people got in trouble (including me) I got a bad citation that my parents have to sign. And that pretty much concludes the day.
Hello! My name is Maddie V., and I am your Cantillon Chronicle reporter for May 15, 2007 and a lot of exciting things happened today. First, we wrote a letter to Sister Mary telling her we will continue praying for her brother, Liam. Liam died so the whole school is sad.
Second, we had Spanish with our teacher, Senora Perla. Today we had a test on the Spanish verb, trabajar that means ‘to work.’
After Spanish, we had D.E.A.R that means “Drop Everything and Read.” I am reading a really good book called Revenge of the Wannabees by Lisi Harrison. Then Miss Cantillon called the students who were in Ask the Presidents podcast. A podcast is a play, but you record the voice. I am the general manager in the podcast.
Afterwards, we had reading. We are doing a thing called Literature Circles. That is where we discuss a book that we are reading. The people in my group are Julie, Makena, and Katie. The book we are reading is Chocolate Fever. It is really good so far. After Lit. Circles we had recess. I sat and read my book with one of my friends.
After Recess, we had grammar. We learned about apostrophes. Then, to start math, we had a speed drill. I finished and got 80 over 80. After the speed drill, we worked on our Mountain Math worksheet. Mountain Math is a sheet with problems on it, and we have to finish the worksheet by Friday. After Mountain Math, we corrected out Math Homework. Then, we had Lunch. When we came back in we had Art. We worked on our president portrait. My president is James Madison.
After art, we had Science; I brought in some books about the planets, because that is what we are learning. After Science, the first group went to Library. While the first group was gone, we finished writing our letters to Sister Mary.
Afterwards, we worked on our Film Futures story. Mine is about a girl who has a magical snow globe that will grant her 3 or more wishes, and she uses up all of the wishes. When the first group returned from Library the rest of us went in. We played Bingo. It was very fun!
Then we went back to class, and packed up and went home. This was the best day ever!
Today we did our Junior Achievement and got cup cakes and juice. After we had Dear. I am reading a good book and it is about a kid that is a new kid, and he punches the school bully. He did it because he was choking him.
After we did literature circles and talked about the book Hoot. We all showed our homework to each other. And went on to Vocab. We did our synonyms and antonyms.
After, went out to recess and played knock out and went back in. Next, we did grammar and talked about commas.
After this, we played “24” for 45 minutes and I won one round. After we went out to lunch and played knock out. Sadly we had to go back in. Then came math. I got an OK grade on my homework but I could have done better. Then we did our president research cards. Then we went into computer class and worked on our movie.
After that we went home.
This morning we were able to catch up with our Journal entries. I also was working on my president’s report. I am halfway done with all twelve of my questions. After, we had science were we took a quiz. After, the test I said, “ I hope I did well”.
After, we took the quiz we played silent ball. Next, we took the States and Capitals quiz. I think I will have to redo it. After, we had recess were we playing knockout and double dutch. After, we had P E were we had a whole bunch of relay races. My team came in second.
Next, we had DEAR. I am reading a scary ghost book. Last, we had buddy reading and I read with my buddy. After that, we went home and got ready for our kindergarten teacher's going away party.
I got to school and did a journal entry. I wrote about how we were supposed to do to the horse show but the trailer and the truck hook-ups were different. But then we went on to our family portrait drawings. I considered my family Shawn, Brooke, Brian, Chris, mom, dad, Izzy, Fox, Austin, and me. Then we read a couple pages out of our Benzinger book.
Later on, We had Vocabulary. We completed the sentences in a little work book. Then we went to recess. At recess I had to take the states and capitals test because I was absent when they took it.
After recess we had science with Mr. J. we did a little experiment. We put together a bunch of washers on a string and we had Makena spin It around her head. We were trying to compare earth and the moon. Everyone was saying, “hit someone with it!” When we were done we had to do a work sheet on it.
Then, Miss Cantillon put on a video of all these little facts about the presidents. We didn’t make it through the whole video because we went to lunch. I guess I had good lunch (I’m fighting a cold.) At lunch I finished the states and capitals test. Then we had to go inside.
When we went inside the classroom we had D.E.A.R. (Drop every thing and read.) I read Each Little Bird That Sings. A book we had assigned for our literature Circles group. Right after we got with our Lit. circle groups. Tonight my job for the book is to make up Questions.
Later, we had Math. We did a speed drill, checked our home work, and went over tonight’s homework with the class. Then we watched the rest of the president video.
Then, we got with our groups for making a colony. We have to make our own colonies. Our colony is called The Colony Of The Who. Oh Yeah!
Last we wrote our home work down, packed-up, and went home!
Hello, I’m Collin D. and I’m your reporter today. Today, in the morning, instead of the usual journal entry, we read a lesson from our social studies books. We will be reading these for a while because we are reading the section about the colonies for our colony project and it is about 100 pages long. We are reading one 4 page lesson a day. Also, in the morning we went downstairs one by one to write a thank you note for Mr. Hunter on a quilt. We are giving it to her because she is leaving next year. We will all miss her. After our morning work was done, Senora Perla came in to teach us Spanish class. Today, she gave everyone a picture and we had to write what the picture was about in Spanish. After Spanish, when Miss Cantillon came back, she gave us a short oral quiz on what we read in our social studies books. It was hard for some of us because we didn’t have time to read the lesson because we were doing our letter to Mrs. Hunter. That only took about 5 min. and then we moved on to our literature circles. This is when we get in our groups of four and discuss what we read from our books the previous night. We also fill out one of five homework sheets on what we read and share those with our groups. Next we worked on our vocabulary. Today we were doing “completing the sentences” with our partners. We had to fill in all the blanks in the sentences with our vocab. words, but I already did it earlier in the week with another partner. Then we were all glad ecause it was recess.
The first thing we did when we got back in from recess was work on our president research for our president projects. My president is Gerald R. Ford. Did you know that Ford was the only president not to be elected? After Nixon resigned, he appointed ford the new president. Next we went over factors in math. We did problems where we got a three digit number and divided 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 10 into it. If it fit in evenly, then it was one of that number's factors. After that we went out to lunch.
When we got back in from lunch, Mr. Jeanson came in to teach us science. We learned about the Earth, the moon, their gravity, and what effect they have on each other. We have been learning about other forces, too, such as inertia. When Mr. Jeanson was done teaching us science, Mr. Guay took us out to the field to play hockey for P.E. We just started playing hockey in P.E. today and will probably play it every P.E. until the end of the year. The last thing we did today was work on our colony projects. We worked on them for about an hour. We call our colony Tuna Bay. It is located in current day Cambridge, MA. The colony project is a little fun because we make everything from the houses to the laws. After that we packed up and went home.
When I got to school today we had a presentation for two hours. Then we took notes for are project. Now we have recess I was playing knock out with all my friends. We went back inside then we had a math speed drill. Finally we got to play 24; this is a game that you can use any way to make 24. We did that for 30 min. Then we had lunch and I played jump rope. Westin said, “Go, Tyler it is your turn.” I jumped with the girls and some of my other friends too. Afterwards we went back inside and had dear. That is when everybody drops everything and read. Then we did our literature circles. We were reading our books called Chocolate Fever.
Then we had colony creation. My partners are Jason, Abby, Manci. Next we had computer class we were working on Imovie. Next we had to do the podcast that took 25 min. Finally it was time to go home and that was my day at school.
Hi! I’m Yasmin, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter! In the morning, everyone got to school wearing a silly hat for crazy hat day. Collin wore a spiky hair hat, Manci wore an umbrella hat! I wore a Mickey “Pirates” hat. Everyone caught up on journal entries and soon Senora Perla, our Spanish teacher, came in. We all wrote a letter to her in Spanish about what we liked and didn’t like in Spanish class. After she left we rushed out of our seats to have Literature Circle discussions. My group, Kat, Abby, and Kathleen D, is reading the book Each Little Bird That Sings. During the last ten minutes, we had time to work on tomorrow's homework. Next, everyone ran to their partners to finish our vocabulary skits. I’m with Manci. Finally, the recess bell rang.
Well, after recess I went to band practice. But when I came back, Miss Cantillon was finishing up a math lesson on factors. All of a sudden Miss Cantillon said, “Do the rest of the Guided Practice tonight. Now let’s go to lunch.”
After an awesome lunch, we were going to finish our president portraits which the art teacher was supposed to leave for us but we couldn’t find them so we just worked on our speech cards until Mr Jeanson came in to give us a review for a Science test on Monday. We finished the review and played silent ball! But soon Mr Jeanson had to leave and Mrs Zipp led us into the computer lab to do a Star Reader Test (it’s not graded). When we got back into our class room, Miss Cantillon announced the we were going to make a poetry book! Everyone made an Acrostic Poem and some read them aloud. Mine was called Yasmin. It went like this:
Y: ells instead of talking
A: nnoying in Kat’s opinion
S: pectacular
M: onkey lover
I: rresistible
N: ice

Hello, my name is Ryan! I will be your reporter today! First up today we have poetry. Collin made a funny poem about penguins! I finished about 2 ½ poems.
Next, we have religion/Benzinger, during that time, Miss Cantillon said, "Next Monday you guys will get(…)the talk. Oh no! During that time we also read the book, and talked about our cultures. Now we have math, first, we checked our homework, then we played a fun math game.
Finally, recess! (panting) After that we gave our poems (again). I made a fun tongue twister.And then we have lunch! Yes!
Then we play “24”. And then we have reading, where we read, and go over our homework. After that, we have Social Studies. We are working on our colony projects, our group is making some pretty good progress.
Next up, is computer class, we are working on our power points on 1957. Mine is pretty good.Then we worked on our poems (again, again).
