Cantillon Chronicle

Every day, a student in our classroom is assigned to be our class reporter. His or her job is to write a short article about what took place in class that day. Using a computer at home or one of the classroom's computers, students type their articles and turn them in to Miss Cantillon via e-mail, CD, or flash drive. This way, students get an opportunity to write using technology, and Miss Cantillon can easily upload the articles to The Cantillon Chronicle. I will try to update this web page daily, so be sure to check back often to read about life in Fifth Grade! Check the class reporter schedule in our classroom.

In the morning we had someone come in and talk about immigration and our ancestors.  “All your ancestors came from different countries unless you are Native American,” Said the person that was telling us about our ancestors.

After that we went to recess and played football, jump rope, fore square, ping pong, and knock out.

After 15 min. we came in for writing.  We learned how to do a closing par.

When that was done, we went to pizza lunch and out for a 10 min. recess.

When we finished, Mr. Jeanson, the 5th grade science teacher and the 6th grade teacher, came in.  We took notes for the test.

When that ended we went to the library.

Finally, the school day was over.

Today, Chris said, "I hope we learn a lot today!" First thing this morning, we did a journal writing. I wrote about why I would be 100 yearsold. After journal writing, we had Spanish. In Spanish, we had to write three paragraphs of Spanish information.

When we finished Spanish, we did D.E.A.R. After D.E.A.R. we did Reading. At 10:00, we did Vocabulary. Next, we had recess. At recess, we jumped, caught and ran. When wereturn to class, we played tic tac toe with our Spellathon words.Afterwards, we had Science. In Science, we made up a quiz and we checked homework. When we finished Science, we went to lunch and I played football. At12:19, we went back to class and did a lot of fun math. Once that was done,we had P.E. We played "Capture the Flag" in P.E. Once that was finished we had our"Immigrant Talk Show". When that was over, we left school. Today, school was very fun.

October 4

Hi! My name is Ana, and today I am your CANTILLON CHRONICLE reporter! In the morning almost everyone was wearing non- uniform. That was because it was non-uniform day. You didn’t have to wear your uniform. It is really fun seeing what different kinds of clothes we wear. Everyone was catching up with the bible verses. At least coloring it in. Soon we had to stop and do math. That was the end of that.

Math time! It was time for math and rounding decimals that were extremely easy. For example - .547

.512

.499

we also did a math multiplication drill. At least everyone can do 20 under 2 minutes. After that Miss Cantillon told us to start our homework. After 10 minutes she told us to stop so we could go to art class.

It was finally art. I was looking forward for this but it ended up really weird. We saw a power point about artist called Paul Cezzahe. Quote “In my opinion Paul Cezzahe is one of my favorite artists” Mrs. McGary said.

All it really was, was that he was born at 1839 and died at 1906. He lived up to be 67 years old. It also had some paintings that he drew. The power point was finally done and the class was over. We (everyone in the class ) had to go do Vocabulary.

It was vocab time and although its one of my two weakest subjects I was excited.

All we did was practice by quizzing each other. Sadly vocabulary was over.

Time for recess!

YES! I said as I saw it was recess time.

Chris and I raced to get a ball basket. I got there first so he took the jump ropes. Out we went to recess.

Soon after an amazing game of knock out we had to sadly go back in the class room we started special which was social studies “pop quiz” and 24 the math game.

Now the pop quiz. Five minutes later. It was the easiest quiz ever. Quote “I know I’m going to ace this test “ said Jonathan.

Soon we handed it in she told us the answers and I got –1 . Finally time for 24. Everyone was quiet, people were happy, some people were mad. The reason of sad /mad was they were losing. The reason for happy/glad was the person was winning. One strike, two strikes, three strikes and you are out .Some people were out of the game because they got 3 strikes. Finally it was over. Time for Lunch. My brake .

TIME FOR LUNCH! I was famished and it was time for a repast.

Awww. Lunch time over. Now its time for D.A.R.E. Which means I don’t have to read but everyone was reading. Not just reading but also writing in the blog, tacking A R `s. I’m excused so I got bored and started doing acrostic poems.

For example my favorite is called soccer

So much fun

Out doors

Crazy sport

Can get hard

Ends at night

Really cool

As you can see I love soccer. I’m not the only person in my class that likes soccer. I have more acrostics but I can’t right them. Now its time for Reading.

Reading time ,this I do need to do. We got an IRONY sheet that had some irony in the book of Holes. It really did help me understand irony. Wow that was short now it’s time for computer class.

“ It’s typing time “ said Mr. Martin (the computer teacher). Once we were done with the typing exercises we did the power point on social skills . Everyone was done but not everyone like William and I. We finished at the last second. Finally its time for the last subject social studies.

Finally Social Studies! The last subject. In social studies all we did was make up a script on Ellis Island history. So many groups were not done but at least half way. FINALLY, its time to pack our bags and go home.

SEE YOU NEXT TIME ON Cantillon Chronicle!

Hi! I’m Robbie with today’s Cantillon Chronicle. Today we went to Student of the Month.  Emily, Daniela, and Jeremy got awards for this month’s virtue: Respect.  We had a spelling test on the 50 spell-a-thon words!

We went to recess for 15 minutes. I played knockout, a basketball game, at recess. Then we went to Mass hosted by the 7th grade. We got to see how many scholar dollars we had. I didn’t have very many. We said good-bye Miss Cantillon and our school day was over.

October 9

Hi, my name is Joe and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter today. First, we did some practice in the booklet called ITBS. We did pages 8-12. Next, we started Spanish with Senora Perla and wrote down some Spanish words. After that, Deacon Mark came to talked to our class about the Beatitudes. Then D.E.A.R. started. We read for 15 minutes. Next, we did some vocabulary with our 2 o'clock partners. Mine is Casey. After that we went to recess and I played knockout with my friends. THen we did some more vocabulary, and after that we had science with Mr. J. Next we had P.E. with Mr. Guay. We played Capture the Flag. At the end of our great day, we had vocabulary with our 5 o'clock partners. Mine is Chris. Finally, it was the end of the day and we went home. I hope you liked my Cantillon Chronicle report!

October 10

Hi, I’m Jonny. I’m today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. We started of the day with doing our practice test of ITBS test. We were finishing the few last pages of the test. Afterward, Miss Cantillon explained what would happen in the real test.

After, that gesture we only had a few minutes for math. We were only able to check our HW. Miss Cantillon gave advanced math sheets to the people who are good in math. They were Luke, Casey, Rachel, Amanda, and I.

Afterward, we went to art. We learned about tinting and outlining. During class we started our still life. We were drawing fruits in a bowl and more.

A few minutes later we did our vocab skits. In the first few ones who did the skit made us laugh. We had to continue the rest after recess. The last ones were very good. George and Thomas’ skits made us laugh the most. And others were well organized.

A little bit later we did our science test. It was on the whole entire unit. Ana said, “I hope I do good. I was studying all night.” I hoped the same. After an immense amount of minutes every body was done. Miss Cantillon said “Were gonna vote if you want to do one round of math 24 or continue what you were.” It was 27 votes for math 24-to1 vote for continuing what you were doing. So of course we did Math24. Later on Miss Cantillon announced that it was time for lunch. That was one of the most interesting lunch I’ve experienced.

Later, we went over our 4 questions on Holes. We also had a literature discussion. Some of the responses in the literature discussion were really hilarious. A lot of people blogged and took A.R.s. It was very unusual.

After literature we took our SS test. It was about immigration. Recently we had a report on immigrants. They were all very intriguing. After a while were all done. The next thing we were going to do was go to Computer.

During computer our teacher Mr.Martin instructed us to do one typing lesson. After that we could either work on our biography on our saints or type our autobiography on ourselves. At one point there was madness because a certain somebody did something and I will not go any further.

After a hilarious computer class we did writing. Miss Cantillon had a mini lesson on writing. It was very helpful for me. That’s how we ended the day of exquisite lessons.

October 11

Hello, I am today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. Today, Miss Cantillon said, “Hand in all of your Spellathon pledges.” So we all bustled around her podium to hand them in.

This morning, we had to work on “what’s the point.” I chose the “animals in danger” article. We worked on this activity until Mrs. Lowell came on for prayer.

After that, we had religion, we learned how to present our saint biography card. There were many steps in order to make it. To me, it sounded like lots of fun!

Next, we went to computers. During computers, we all finished our autobiographies. If we finished that, we could start doing research on our saints, and some of us even starting to design their saint biography cards.

When we finished computers, we had our vocabulary Test. I was pretty sure I had studied well.

Then, we had a coffee break. We all had a chance to cool down.

Here it was, the final test. We were about to have our final Spellathon test. I could tell that everyone was a little nervous. But in the end, it turned out to be pretty easy.

After the test, it was time for recess. During recess, we celebrated Tiffany’s birthday with brownies. Those were excellent! Then we all went off to play. We all played the usual things. For example, football, knock out, jump roping, ping pong, and four square. I played with the jump ropes with some of my friends.

When recess ended, we had DEAR time. That was relaxing,

Then, Mr. Guay came in. It was time for PE! We played capture the flag. I think everyone enjoyed that.

When we came in from PE, we had time to sit down and read while Evan passed out spiced peaches. Yum! I thought they were really good. Now I can understand why everyone loved Kate’s spiced peaches! (from holes)

Next was buddy reading. My buddy is Emilia. I read her “If you give a pig a party”. I think she liked it.

Then, miss Cantillon announced the buddy readers. They were Tiffany and Brandon. Next, she announced the star citizen. It was Luke. Finally, she put all of the people with responsible behavior into a drawing. The lucky winner was… Joe! He received a gift certificate to cold stone.

Finally, it was time to pack up. What a fun day I had.

Hi! I am Micaela G. and I am the reporter for Cantillion Chronicle. Now we are preparing for the ITBS test. I hope everyone does well.  Some people are doing math practice tests, some are reading, and some are doing mastery club challenges.  We just finished some of the ITBS tests.  Now we have recess.  At recess we were playing many different types of games.  And now we are listening to the immigration podcast that my class made.  Wow, that was a great podcast that our class did.  Next we have music.  Today we were given our books in music class.  Next Monday there will be a talent show in my class.  Wow, I’ve noticed I’m really bad at piano.  Now we have lunch.  At lunch people were playing football, four square, jump rope and knock out.  When I was playing knock out I was hit in the head by a football and now my head really hurts.  Next we are having “D.E.A.R.” which means Drop Everything And Read.  People are doing quizzes, reading and blogs.  We just did partner reading and my partner was Rachel.  Next we are doing “All About The Author”.  We just had science and we had to classify many different things.  Now we are having a coffee break.  That is when we get two minutes to do whatever we want to do.  Now we have social studies and we are going to talk about the “Star of India”.  There are very specific vocabulary words.  We have to do sea chantey that is a song.  My group has a great song.  Now we are having study skills.  We are playing lets make a deal.  Anna said today, “I am so sad school is over”.

October 16

Today in the world of the fifth grade class we started out the day with the grueling I.T.B.S testing. After the testing we got to go out to recess. As always I played football, we ended up getting extra recess because we played fairly. When we got in from recess the Star of India groups got together practiced the sea chanteys. And did scenarios of what might happen on a ship. After we were all done with the skits we started the mapping class and learned what you can use maps, and globes for. We were all pretty antsy to get to pizza lunch, at lunch I played football again. After lunch we went in to do our speed drill, learn the basics of mountain math, and check the homework. Once we got our math done it was time for SCIENCE WITH MR. J! During science we got into groups we formed the day before and compared our homework. Next the segment of the class that wasn’t in library checked their autobiographies. When it was our turn to go to library we each got a partner and learned how to use the book researcher on the computer. Finally when we went back up to the classroom it was time to pack up and leave. Those were the happenings today.

October 17

Hi, I’m Mallory, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter for the day of Wednesday, October 17, 2007.

We started the day off by writing a journal entry. The idea I chose was if you were a superhero what powers would you have? I said I would be super fast, be able to fly, and have super strength. The class would work on this until Mrs.Lowell, the principal, came on for prayer.

After prayer was over we worked on Journal entry for 10 more minutes. Next we did Iowa Testing. The first subject we did was Math Concepts and Estimation. One question on it was Mark counted 600 pennies on day 1. Each day after that he counted half as many he did the day before. How many did Mark count on day 4?
A.75
B.100
C.150
D.375
The correct answer is A.75. After Math Concepts and Estimation was over we went on to the next one, Math Problem Solving and Data Interpretation. One of the problems on that were one afternoon 15 campers went hiking. Three times as many campers went swimming as went hiking. How many campers went swimming?
A.5
B.18
C.30
D.45
The correct answer is D.45. Most of the other questions on that subject were with graphs. After that subject, Math Problem Solving and Data Interpretation, it was Math Computation (the last subject). This subject was timed. On of the questions would be 847 times 35.
A.29,654
B.27,645
C.29,645
D.27,654
The correct answer is C.29,645. When the Iowa testing was finally done for the rest of the day it was time for recess.

During recess I played pass with a football with my friends in the P.E. yard. It was a ton of fun!

After that great time we sung to some sea chanteys and made up our own verses to What Shall we do With a Drunken Sailor.

After that entertainment we had to calm down for Science with Mr.Jeanson. During Science we finished the end of our lesson and took notes for a quiz for next Monday, but all we needed to know was an Animal Kingdom table and our vocabulary words genus and species.

Then it was time for lunch. During lunch I played football in the P.E. yard.

Next we played a game called Math 24. I was at the head table and stayed there because Rachel left, then Casey left, and Rachel came back.

After that excitement it was time for more excitement in P.E. with Mr.Guay. we played Capture the Flag (red vs. yellow). I was on the yellow team and we won 13 yellow 7 red.

Then we sang some more sea chanteys with lyrics. The ones we sang were Roll the Chariot, John Kanaka, Haul away Joe, Strike the Bell, Drunken Sailor, and Leave Her Johnny. After we sang we went to our groups for the Star of India. I’m in the Deckhands and my mate is Dimitri. When we were with our groups we finished our sea chanteys and then practiced them. Ours is called Deckhands and has the tune to the blues.

Finally we packed up, announced the Secret Student which was Ryan, and left.

October 19

Hi! I’m today’s reporter, Tiffany. I am here to tell you all about what happened in Miss Cantillon’s classroom on October 19, 2007.

In the morning we started something called “What’s the Point?” I read about a robot that can figure out how to do Rubik’s Cubes. Next, we did some ITBS testing. I hope I did well.

During computer class I practiced typing and I did part of my Saint Report. A little bit after that, we did some more ITBS testing. Wish me luck!

During recess I played a fun game of 4 square. I got to the server spot once which was really cool. After that we did some Mountain Math. Mountain Math is when we get a piece of paper and we are asked questions of the paper.

Then, we went to read to our first grade buddies! I read her a Dr. Seuss book called Up.

Finally, we packed up, prayed, and went home. The report is in, and I’m out.

“Hi! My name is Sarah your reporter today.” Just before school started we had to do journal writing. Half of the class was gone I bet half of the class was gone probably because of the fire in Ramona. Smoke & ashes have hovered over our city. We are probably are going to have recess inside because of the bad air quality. “School is closed,” my class yelled because we were happy school was closed. School was closed due to the fire in Ramona. Everybody was so happy. While we waited for our parents to come pick us up we watched a movie called Holes.

October 30

Hey! I’m Amanda, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. This morning was tough, none of the kids in the class could take any ARs because the school server was down, so we didn’t really use the computers at all. There was no school for a week so it was a little hard to get back with the program. We started off the morning with a journal entry, and then we were supposed to have Spanish but Miss Cantillon didn’t know if Mrs. Perla was coming for Spanish class or not, so we basically just waited for about ten minutes or so. But she finally came so we had Spanish, we were learning about verbs. After that we had to do some testing, it wasn’t the ITBS testing though, it was Cogat. When all the kids heard that they weren’t exactly excided about it, in fact it was very boring. Next it was recess, we couldn’t play outside, so we watch the beginning of the movie Holes, but some kids had to take their school picture re-takes so the missed the beginning, and I was one of them! About twenty minutes after that, the teacher talked to us about a group presentation on the book Holes, so we worked with our groups for ten minutes. Later it was Math, we continued to do the multiplication speed drill and I got a fifty! After that it was Mountain Math, it was confusing at first for some people, but they got it! Finally we had lunch and when everybody remembered that we couldn’t play they they were depressed. So to kill the recess time we watched some more of Holes and got some laughs and it was time for Computer in what seemed to be a flash! Miss Cantillon said that we could work on our group presentation in Holes or our saint project. Computer was real short. Next was Science. The last time in Science class Mr. Jeanson told us that if we didn’t do well on this than we were all “fools”. But no worries, I think everybody did pretty well. Last there was mass practice. The class was almost to the bottom of our paperclip chain so we were all trying to be extremely well behaved, (well some of us). During mass practice we went over the songs for mass and it was over. When we got back to class we had to pack up and Miss Cantillon announced the secret student, Mallory and told us that we reached the bottom of our paperclip chain. That’s it! ‘Hope you keep reading the Cantillon Chronicle!:)

November 1

Today is November 1st, and is the Feast of All Saints. The entire school celebrated All Saints Day, by preparing reports on saints and presenting the reports in class. We had the All Saints assembly at 9:15 in the junior yard and then walked around the school. Everyone wore costumes in honor of the various saints. It was super to see all the kids dressed in a Saints costume.  After this we went to Mass dressed in costume. I was dressed as St. Andrew of Scotland, and wore a tartan plaid hat.

Before Mass we worked on our journal writing, and did a few saint reports on the saints our class chose. At about 9:15 we went to assembly, and Mass. Before lunch we finished reading our saint projects. After lunch we had DEAR. When DEAR ended we had went to the computer lab to do our reading projects. Around 2:30 we played one game of 24 Math Sarah won at my table, and Joe won at the head table. The day ended, and I learned from listening to the reports that to be a saint you have to love God more than anything and obey his commandments.

As the clock ticked slowly, we all started to come into Ms. Cantillon'sclassroom. Today is Wednesday November 7, 2007. We all came in the class room by 8:15 am. We started the day off with Journal writing, then at 8:30, Mrs. Lowell said the prayer. Today was Rachel's birthday. At 8:40, Senor Perla (Spanish Teacher)came into the classroom and we were memorizing vocabulary Words. Then we played a game, the winning team got to skip the next quiz. After Spanish, we took notes on English definitions ,Adverbs and such. Then it was 10:00, we learned new vocabulary words in vocabulary class. At 10:15, we went out to recess. When we came back into the classroom, we had our math test and right after the math test, we did our math fax competition. The top score students in our class would represent our school .

While we wait for Mr. jeanson (science Teacher) to come, we put our work into our portfolios. When Mr. Jeanson came into the classroom, we checked our homework from Tuesday. Then Mr. Jeanson told us to take notes because we will have a quiz about vertebrates on Thursday. Even though we are not having science class on Thursday, we are still going to have the quiz. After science, it was 11:45 and it was time for lunch. We all finished lunch at 12:15 and were back in the room, Miss Cantillon told us who got the highest scores in the math fax class. In first place ,there was a tie with 19 questions correct. It was Jonathan and Luke. In second place, there was a three way tie with 18 questions correct and the winners were Mallory, Robbie and Jeremy. As the time went by, it was 1:00 and we had P.E. This subject was fun and it gets you lots of exercise. After P.E., we watched a video about early explorers. We watched the movie until 2:40, then Rachel passed out doughnuts to everyone to celebrate her birthday. There were sugar and glazed kinds of doughnuts. It was almost the end of the day which was 2:55 and we packed up our backpacks. We all got our chairs up on top of the desk, Miss Cantillon said that the secret student for the day was Brandon. Then Rachel said the cheer "Tally Ho let's Go" and we all went outside and the day was over.

Once we finished eating we came in and made a cube and a pyramid out of paper and rubber bands!! Next we had science ! We did an experiment with celery and food coloring. We put the celery in the cups filled with food coloring , and the celery  leaves turned red and blue!!!

Later in the day we went to library we learned how to use a computer dictionary. Finally we went back to class and packed up. We said our prayers and either went home or went to math club.  Another great day at SMA!

November 14

8:00 This is the most busy time of the day, the morning. First we get unpacked and turn in our homework. Next it depends on what day it is but usually we write a journal entry. That’s when you pick a topic and just start to write a paragraph on it. Today we worked on our portfolios. Portfolios are a file we put some of our work in. This week we start the parent teacher conferences. Also because of this it is a half-day. We get out of school at 12:30.

8:30 This is the day that we have Spanish class! It’s a lot of fun. Today we learned about the masculine and feminine verbs and words. We also learned the days of the week and months of the year. We made a little game out of it. The Spanish teacher always says “ Espanol es muy importante.” That means that Spanish is very important.

9:15 At this time of the day we had DEAR. That means Drop Everything And Read. We have 15 minutes of DEAR. There is always total silence for this time. Together in the class we are reading the book A Year Down Yonder. So far it’s a great book.

9:45 Now we discussed what we read in the book A Year Down Yonder. It is always great to have a conversation on book s we are reading like this one. We talk about Predictions, Sum-ups, and Questions. It is so intriguing!

10:00 Now we have vocabulary scripts. We act out a play with at least 7 vocabulary words. Today we wrote the scripts, tomorrow we act them out. We get partners to help us with the scripts.

10:15 Now we have recess. We get to play basketball, kickball, football, soccer, ping-pong, and fore square. We play for 15 minutes.

10:30 Now we practice our grammar and spelling. Today we proofread a paragraph. In our books we worked on proofreading and finding misspelled words.

11:00 We have Science next. Our teacher is Mr. Jeanson. We corrected homework on an exprement with food coloring and water. We are studying the two main types of plants, “ Vasculine and Nonvasculine.”

11:45 We practice parent teacher conferences with my 5th Grade teacher Miss. Cantillon.

12:00 We read a script to the laptop of the early explorers and there discoveries like, Magellan, Marco Polo, and Christopher Columbus.

12:30 A good days work and the school day ends.

November 15

Hello, I am Rachel, today’s Cantillon Chronicle Reporter!  Today is Thursday, November 15, 2007.

We started off reading TFK magazine.  I was reading about a new planet scientists discovered.  After, we had math timed test, mountain math, and math homework.  One of the questions was: Mr. And Mrs. Gregorio took their five children to the fair.  Each child in the family got $4 less than the next older brother or sister to spend at the fair.  If the oldest child received $20, how much did the youngest receive?  A: $4!  We also learned a new lesson!

Then, we had art.  I drew five Poinsettias!  They were red and green.  Next, we did vocabulary scripts.  Mine was about shopping.  After, we had recess.  After recess, we did more vocabulary scripts.

Next, we played “Let’s Make A Deal!”  I got 2 candies! Yahoo!  Then, we had D.E.A.R.  (Drop Everything and Read).  I am reading the book called Lunch Money!  It is a very good book!  After, some of my classmates read their 4 questions.  Next, we looked in our atlases.  We were learning about the North Pole and South Pole.  Then, we played 24 math.  Finally, we packed up and went home.

November 16

Hi! My name is Daniela A. and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter for today, November 16, 2007.

After unloading a truckload full of books, I put my books in my desk, and put my backpack away.

The first thing we did was discuss the TIME for kids. We talked about the finding of King Tut’s body and the fifth new planet in a different galaxy.

Next, it was time for what we call Postcard Geography. The sharing team shared four postcards from Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, and Missouri. After they read them, they asked three questions each from the postcard that they read to the class.

After Postcard Geography, we went to the computer lab to have computer class. During computers, we all typed for five minutes, and then most of us worked on the Teach the Teacher Presentation. The rest of us were finished with the presentationso we played chess.

When we got back to class, we had our vocabulary test. I think that most of us did really well. Nevertheless, we kept our folders up because then we had our spelling test. Our class is doing a new spelling program; the system is a little confusing but the words are easy.

At last! We get to have recess! I will tell you all about it when I get back.

Well, during recess, I played Dodge Ball with Emily, Libby, and Michaela. I also checked out a book for my buddy, Daniella Webb.
As I write, we are giving compliments. That is when you compliment someone on their actions during recess that were impressive or just plain nice. I got a nice compliment from Libby!

WOW! Time DOES fly when you’re having fun! Mr. Guay is here. That means that it is P.E. time. For the last few P.E. sessions, we have played Capture the Flag, so I have a feeling that that is what we are going to be playing today. When we got out to play, we ran for about five minutes and then were divided into teams, girls verses boys.

When the girls came back from a MAJOR loss, we all had glum faces. And the boys had just the opposite! The next thing we did was read for about 15 minutes. I read the book “Kissing the Rain”. It is really good so far.

Finally! It was time for Buddy Reading. That is where my class and I go to the first grade classroom. We teach and read to our buddies. When we got over to the first grade classroom, my buddy, Daniella Webb, and I read a book called “Bark, George”. She has the book and must really like it because she had it memorized. She said, “Let’s take the quiz because I haven’t taken it yet”. But it turned out she already took the quiz.

Anyway, we are now back in the classroom.  Miss Cantillon just announced that the star citizen was George T.  The star student was Ryan N. and the star buddy readers were Evan, Luke, and Ana.

Then, I packed up, said our end-of-the-day prayer, said “goodbye” to Miss Cantillon and headed out the door.

That was my day.  I had a lot of fun!  Did you?

November 29

Hi, I am Robbie and I am the Cantillon Chronicle reporter for Thursday, November 29, 2007. Today we had two specials taught by different teachers such as Mr. Martin and Mrs. McGarry.  For our morning work we wrote the lesson 6 bible verse in our best handwriting.

Then we had Junior Achievement taught by Mr. Irwin. He worked on Wall St. and has lots of experience with entrepreneurship, because he created many businesses. He talked about partnership, how to create a business, franchises, and corporations.

Next we had our special art class, taught by Mrs. McGarry. We finished up our poinsettia paintings and Paul Cezanne imitations.  Mrs. McGarry commented on my work saying, “Maybe you should add a little more shadow to your Paul Cezanne painting.”

We went to recess. Most people played football, wall ball, or dodge ball. A few others played ping pong.

After recess we took notes on pronouns in our word skills class.

Once finished taking notes, we played 24, an entertaining math game.

After that, Miss Cantillon gave us time to do our bible verse or D.E.A.R. during our literature period.

Later, we went to computer class taught by Mr. Martin. We typed for 15 minutes, and then researched for our tough explorer project. We had Social Studies next, and we put our research information from computer class together during that period. Finally, we watched, listened to, and appreciated the last of the Teach the Teacher presentations.

I think we had a great Thursday.

December 4

Hi, I’m today’s Chronicle reporter. My name is Jonny. Today we started of the day w/ handwriting. We worked on that till our principal Mrs. Lowell talked on the intercom and announce our prayers.

Our Spanish teacher was waiting outside when the prayers were done. During Spanish we learned opposites of words in Spanish. Afterwards, we had D.E.A.R (drop everything and read) for 20 minutes.

Miss Cantillon our teacher announced that we will have Reconciliation today. Mrs. Lowell would come in and tell us it was time to go to Reconciliation. After a few minutes that happened. It only took about 20 minutes and they’re 28 of us. I think the only reason that happened that they were 3 priests.

Right after that we had recess. During recess I played touch football. Wowzers that was a good game even though neither teams got a touchdown. Both teams defense was great.

After recess we worked on our skits for vocabulary. We had to use 21 vocab words from our book instead of seven. This was because we were down with 3 units then we have a review. We were to work with a partner. Mine was Robbie. Robbie said” This is going to be so funny. Everything will be named after cheese or a kind of cheese!” The name of our skit was CHEESE WARS instead of STAR WARS.

We worked on that until 15 minutes before lunch. That was we had pizza lunch. We had 15 minutes of lunch until everyone was done with their lunch. Again I played football again neither team scored a touchdown. And again I mention that both teams had great defense.

After lunch, we corrected our math homework. In math our teacher gives math challenges to students who are good in the lesson we learned in math. This math challenge group works in the back and compare answers. This time there wasn’t an argument unlike some times.

Mr. Jeanson our Science teacher came in after math class was done. Today we had a big test. It was over 3 chapters we read about. After some time when everyone was done. Mr. J (as some people like to call him) wanted to go over the test.

Later when science class was done we had library with our library teacher Mrs. Zipp. The 2nd half of the class went to library while the first half did our letters we would send to the marines for Christmas.

Then we transitioned. That’s how we ended the day after writing our homework and prayed.

December 5

Hi! My name is Emily and I am today’s chronicle reporter.

In the morning, we finished our marine cards. I thought that they all came out wonderfully. Then, Mrs. Lowell came on for prayer so we all had to stop writing and coloring.

Next, Senora Dulce came in for our Spanish class. We played a game called pata. She would ask us a question and we would have to write the answer on the whiteboard as fast as we could. The first person to have the correct answer, tap the board when finished, says pata, wins a point. Hawaii won the game with the most points.

After Spanish, we had D.E.A.R. In the middle of D.E.A.R., Deacon Mark came into our classroom and taught us about the last gospel and homily from church. We learned that we are kind of like an onion. The outside skin is sin and selfishness and the inside is love and pureness. That was very interesting.

When he left, we all finished up D.E.A.R.

Then, we were assigned parts for the Great Depression Podcast. We then started to practice our lines. That was fun.

When we finished practicing, we all went to our 11 o’clock partners to work on our vocabulary scripts. We had to use 21 words from unit 1-3. That was a lot more than usual. I thought it was hard to think of a script that long!

Finally, it was time for recess. I went to play dodge ball with Daniela, Libby, Micaela, Sarah, Amanda, and Tiffany. Some people also played football, ping-pong, jump rope, butts up, and many other fun games.

When we got inside, we had spelling. First, we had to think of words ending in ge and dge. Then, we completed pages in our spelling workbook.

Next, we had science. We started off with an experiment, We wanted to see if we weighed 2 balloons and then pop one, what would happen to the popped one. Then we got worksheets to complete.

Time for lunch! Everyone bustled out of the classroom. We then ate our lunches and played all of the games we had played at recess.

When it was time to go in, we took our math test/quiz. I thought it was pretty easy.

Then, Mr. Guay walked right through the doorway. We all went outside and played soccer for P.E.

Next, we had time to catch up on things like postcard geography, explorer note cards, mountain math, etc.  I think I used my time wisely.

After that, we all lined up and went to the church to practice our mass parts. I think we were getting good at them.

Well, then the day ended and we all went home. I think we all had a nice day!

Hello my name is Chris and I am proud to be today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter. Our day started of with a barrage of math, for math did mountain math in place of morning work. After that we had our Mathfax contest, and finished math off by checking the homework and starting today’s math homework. Finally it was recess time; I played football like usual and we had extra recess because we were good in mass on Friday. When we got back from recess we had to start our spelling tests. After we finished the tests we went to music and practiced our pageant songs. The songs Mr. Grill gave us are Christ Was Born On Christmas Day, and Rocking Around The Christmas Tree. After music it was lunch and boy was I starving, once again I played football. After lunch we had D.E.A.R for a good 15 minutes. After D.E.A.R we read A Year Down Yonder with partners. Then after reading we did a school wide practice for the pageant. It took us the rest of the day so when we got back to the classroom we packed up and left. And that was our day.

December 11

Hi, I’m Mallory, today’s Cantillon Chronicle reporter that is the day of Tuesday, December 11, 2007. Before I start I’ll say that this was the first day that the Book Fair Blizzard was open.

Anyway, today our morning work was to start a card to a sick/hurt soldier in the hospital. You would write three paragraphs. The first one would be about you, the second one would be questions (like When do you think you’ll be out of the hospital?), and the last paragraph would be wishing them a Merry Christmas etc.

Next our principal, Mrs. Lowell, came on for prayers like always.

When Mrs.Lowell finished we continued working on the cards until our substitute Spanish teacher, Senora Duse, came in. In Spanish we learned numbers. During this Miss Cantillon left to go to a meeting with Mrs.Lowell, so our substitute, Mrs.McConville, substituted for her.

After Spanish we had DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). I read our class book A Year Down Yonder.

Next we practiced our podcast which is about the Great Depression.

Since practicing our podcast was over we had DEAR again.

Finally we had recess! I played two hand touch football and we had extra recess.

After that excitement we sang and listened to our pronoun songs. The people in my group are Emily, Micaela, Robbie, and Eugenio. Our tune to it is Drunken Sailor.

Then we had mapping. We learned about latitude, longitude, equator, and prime meridian.

Finally we  had lunch! I played football again and it was a lot of fun.

When we came back from lunch we sang We Wish You A Merry Christmas.

When we finished singing we checked our math homework. When we were done correcting we had a choice by doing our math homework for the next day or Mountain Math.

Right after that our science teacher, Mr. Jeanson, came in. First we corrected our science homework, A Property of Air, which was about an investigation we did. Next we read lesson one in our science books. It was about Earth’s atmosphere and it’s layers. Do you know the four layers? They are the trosposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and the thermosphere. Finally we filled out lesson one on our organizers. During that Miss.Cantillon came back.

Following science it was library (time for the book fair). The first group (which I was in) went first because it was our turn. I got an eraser, an arplane book, and a book you can write and play fun games in.

When it was the second groups turn to go we did wrting. We continued on the letters we were writing in the morning.

Then Mrs.Halter came in and tought us about Norman Rockweell (1894-1978)

We would look at pictures he drew and we would guess the story it had behind it like this. She said that this one is about a girl that is dreaming of  being a famous person.

Finally after Mrs.Halter left we wrote our homework down and got packed up. “Our ‘Secret Student’ today is Chris Halter,”she announced.

December 12

Hey, It’s me Thomas again your Cantilon Chronicle reporter. The day started pretty smoothly with Spanish class. Our teacher wrote our points from yesterday on the board. Our tables are known as states. New York had three points, Massachusetts and three points as well, Hawaii had three points as well, Arizona had two, Florida had two, and Illinois had none. In Spanish we learned about shapes, sizes and colors. Once Spanish was over we had DEAR. Then we had literature and learned some new literary terms. They were alliteration, assonance, cliché, hyperbole, idiom, onomatopoeia, and personification. Next we looked in our reading books, A Year Down Yonder, to find an example of each literary term. Then we had recess. Our next class was math; we did our division speed drills. Then we went straight to lunch. After that Miss Cantilion taught us a new game, it was called Heads Up. The goal of the game is to use all of the numbers that are given to answer each line. Next we had P.E. Our P.E. teacher’s name is Mr. Guay. He called us out to run our laps, and then he had the soccer captains come up and get their jerseys. The teams were called the red white, yellow, and blue teams. The red played the blue and the yellow played the white team. Then we split up and played our games. After we played he told us to go to the bathrooms and then go back to class. Our next class was writing, we started with our Christmas cards to the soldiers. That wrapped up our day.

December 13

Hi! I’m Tiffany H. and I’m today’s chronicle reporter. In the morning we had Junior Achievement and learned about mass, unit, and batch production. We also learned how to put clicking pens together. After, we went to art and I finished a painting of a fruit bowl. When I finished, I started to practice sketching an animal from a magazine for a future painting. Later, we had vocabulary and highlighted different stuff about Advent.

Then, we had recess and I played team ball. The game is just like dodge ball, but with one ball. And so, we had grammar/spelling next. During that time, we did a crossword puzzle and a proof reading sheet. Then, we played a math game called 24. 24 is a game where you have cards that have numbers on them, and you use them in pairs not used twice to get the answer 24. I was hungry, so it was time for lunch. Again I played the fun game of team ball.

After lunch, we did D.E.A.R.. D.E.A.R means: drop everything and read. I read part of the Deltora Quest series: Dread Mountain. Reading was next, and we did a literature circle on the book A Year Down Yonder.  During computer class, we practiced typing, we also started working on our explorer project. Last, we practiced our Christmas songs and played Let’s Make A Deal. Finally, we packed up and left. See you next time on chronicle report.

In the morning Evan and Ryan got to ride in a police car. Our morning work was Mountain Math. If we finished we would need to finish our sample of a 5 paragraph essay on what we for Christmas. Yesterday night was the night of Noel whoever went to it would get a free homework pass. Many kids in our class came. Some kid in our class didn’t get a homework pass because they though they couldn’t use them. Soon after we talked about the homework passes Ms. Cantillon told us how we were going to make our Advent wreaths. After a half hour we went to computer class. During that we worked on our power point presentation.  When we came back we worked on the wreaths again. We finished with the wreaths, picked up trash and then went to recess.  During recess three flags up and football. When we came in for recess. After that we worked on our five paragraph essays. PE, finally we were out of the class! In PE we played soccer, my teamed tied 2-2. When we cam back we went over our mountain math. Soon after that we went over to the first grade classroom and read to our buddies. I read Dear Mrs. Larue. When we got back we packed up and went home. Talk to you next time.

December 17

This morning was fun; we started by making cards for our 1st grade buddies. After that we worked on geometry. During geometry we were making cubes out of paper that Casey taught us. But before we started the class took pictures with the moringa tree. When we started making the cubes many kids got confused. I was the first to finish so I went around helping. Once the kids got helped they did fine.(they’re very quick learners!) And then it was recess. After recess everybody started making their Christmas trees, I was helping Rachel, ours turned out awesome! Next it was lunch and most kids were playing football, ”Chris got four interceptions,” George told me. During recess I was playing two touch with Tiffany and Ana, and when I kicked a ball Mr.Martin blocked it and said, “I have the reflexes of a snail!” Tiffany and I started laughing. After that it was D.E.A.R. and I’m reading an awesome book called “A Swiftly Tilting Planet” and it’s awesome. Chris is Star Citizen so he was playing on the computer. He was playing Wacky Zingoz on Webkins world and everybody thought it to be hilarious including me. Later it was a dress rehersal for the Christmas program and that was the end of the day.

    February 1

I’m today’s chronicle reporter. My name is Jonny. Today we started our day reading Time for Kids. Today’s issue was one of the best I’ve ever read. It had articles about the election, economy, kids in India, and more. A few minutes later, we had student of the month. It’s where kids in each grade are awarded for excellence in the virtue of the month. This month’s virtue was “Celebrating for each other.” In fifth grade, three people were awarded. It took about an hour to go through the entire school (K-8th grade). After the assembly, we went straight to computer class. We started the computer class by doing our touch typing exercises for ten minutes. Next, we researched about our report which took about thirty minutes. Our topic for this report was about American states. After computer class, we had only thirty minutes away from recess. During those thirty minutes we worked on our JA books. This is a program where kids learn about how a business runs. We defined business terms and were reviewed between every few terms. After recess, we then went back to JA. A few minutes later, our P.E teacher Mr.Guay comes in. We are having our running season. We run nonstop for a certain amount of time. A week later he might increase the running time by a minute or two. When P.E was done, we had fifteen minutes before buddy reading. This is where fifth graders are grouped with a first grader to help them improve reading. I brought a book for my buddy called Shoo Fly Guy!  I recommend this to all young readers. It makes little kids learn and laugh at the same time. Our home teacher Miss Cantillon gives out awards daily and weekly. Star Citizen weekly, Star Buddy Reader weekly, and Secret student daily. Finally, we were dismissed from school. At the end of the day Miss Cantillon lets us trade candy with our tickets that we earn.

February 4

Hi guys it’s Emily, your chronicle reporter for today!

8:00 First, we all worked on our morning journal entries. I wrote about what I would like to find inside an old trunk that I found in my grandparent’s attic.

8:20 Then, Mrs. Lowell came on for prayers; so we all dropped our pencils and prayed.

8:30 After that, Miss Cantillon gave us ten more minuets to work on our journal entries.

8:45 When the ten minutes were up, we started to review something new in religion called the ACRE tests. Our teachers just wanted to see how much religion we knew. Then, we would take it again in eighth grade to see how much we learned. The testing will start tomorrow.

9:45 When we finished reviewing for those tests, it was time for math. We started off with the multiplication speed drill. I got 56 problems right; which I thought was pretty good. Then we went into Mountain math for a few minuets and then ended the math period by working on the Guided Practice questions in our math books.

10:00 Then, it was vocabulary time! We finished drawing the last few pictures to their meanings in our vocab. books. We were running a little behind on this because last week was Catholic School’s Week.

10:15 finally, it was recess. I watched lots of my classmates play football in the P.E. yard, while some fourth graders were having fun doing double-dutch (jumping roe with two ropes).

10:40 When all of us had trudged up the stars after recess, Miss Cantillon made an announcement. There was going to another class job. Each week, we would take turns being “environmentalists”. So, after lunch and dismissal, the two people who had that job that week, would just clean and wipe down the lunch tables and pick up any trash. I think it was a good idea.

10:45 Next, took our spelling pre-tests while others went and too their hearing checked. I think it got kind of hectic because we had to keep re-reading the sentences to the kinds who had just come back from their hearing tests.

11:05 Now, it was music time! We all bustled into the classroom, eager to practice on the keyboards. We did this for about thirty minuets while others signed up for the upcoming talent show. Then for the last fifteen minuets, people shared songs they could play on the keyboard. It was kind of funny when kids started to get up and dance.

11:45 Next was lunch! When we came out to lunch, we found all of the tables wiped down and clean. The environmentalists had done a good job! When I finished my lunch, Libby and I helped the environmentalists (Daniela and Evan) clean everything up. We were wiping, cleaning, scrubbing and drying. When we finally finished, Libby remarked, “that was fun.” I had to agree myself, it was kind of fun. But then, I notice, lunch was over.

12:15 When we came in, it was D.E.A.R. time. We had a chance to take AR quizzes and read. I am currently reading a very good book called The Little White Horse.

12:40 After D.E.A.R it was time for our literature discussions with our groups. I was the illustrator today. I really like literature discussions. I think I learn a lot more.

1:00 Just when we finished our discussions, Mr. Jeanson strode through the door. W read lesson one and learned about the different causes of wind.

1:45 Then, Miss Cantillon was nice enough to give us a five-minuet coffee break. This gave us a chance to finish our literature discussions or talk with friends.

2:00 When we all sat down after the coffee break; we watched a movie and took notes on the Spanish explorers. I think I got some fairly good notes.

2:20 Finally, at the end of the day, Mrs. Halter came in for Current Events. We first reviewed facts about the presidential candidates and then we voted for our favorite. Barack Obahma won with the most votes.

3:00 Then, Mrs. Halter left and the day was over we all packed up, prayed, thanked Miss Cantillon, and went home. Hope to see you next time on the Cantillon Chronicle!

Today I was late because I was not feeling good.  When I got to school, we were doing literature circles.  My group is with Joe, Ricky, Casey and me.  Then we did vocabulary and we had partners and my partner was Jonathan and we finished.  Then at recess, I talked with Ana, Sarah and Amanda.  Then we had a religion test.  Then for lunch I had soup.  It was cold at lunch so Sarah said, “it is so cold I could freeze”.  Then we had math and learned what the mean is.  So, now I know what mean, means.  Now we have science and we are correcting our homework.  We are reviewing our science quiz that we have tomorrow.  Now we have JA.  We are going on a field trip to biz town.  That was fun.  Here we go to the library, I wonder what we will do? WE did a test in the library.  We just got cake.  Yummy.  Now it is time to pack up and pray.

February 13

Hey People!!! This morning was hectic! We had Spanish.  It was all about the verbs! After that we had interviews for a Biztown fieldtrip. My interviewer, Mr. Horgan asked me questions like, “What qualifies you to have this job?” When I was finished, the kids around me asked me what it was like and they said that he was the hardest interviewer there! I couldn’t believe it because he was so nice! Then we had recess, I was playing three flies up and I feel that I’ve gotten quite good at it. That had to be a phenomenal recess! Then we had literature circles, my group was doing a wonderful job and I think that our project will be the best! Later we had science, we had a quiz, and it was pretty hard! But the class survived. Next it was lunch, and as you probably know, I played 3 flies up, (again) J and boy was it exciting! The class got new clock partners after that riveting game, and on my clock, I have some awesome people! Now we have math, and the challenge group was like monkeys in a barrel! We were all so eager to answer the problems and show our sample problems. Mallory was a fantastic teacher; she really kept the group focused. After math we have P.E., we had to run for 13 minutes! Secondary to running we had a relay race between red, blue, white and yellow. Previous to Current Events we had an interesting Social Studies TEST! Current events was really interesting, we learned about an artist named Vincent Vangoh, he has to be the most talented impressionist in the world!!!!!! The End!

February 15

Good morning, it’s Thursday February 14, 2008. I’m Mathias M. your chronicle reporter for today. We started our day of with Math, it was all about graphs and barographs. Then it was Art class, we made Chinese dragon sculptures, it was so hard to do but the final results will be finished next week. After that we did vocabulary scripts everybody was acting weirdly. Today was a very wet one it rained all day long so us fifth graders have to have an inside recess.

Afterwards, we continued our word skills. Once that was done, 24 Math began it was a real mind bender. Lunch was also inside we played chess and board games we rather have been outside but it was raining cats and dogs!

Then time for Literature class which we talked about unit 4’s stories and how we enjoyed their historical meaning for the U.S. When that was over, we went to computer class with Mr. Martin, our class worked on our state project. Instead of Social Studies we had our St. Valentine’s Day party, which started off by giving, and receiving sweet valentines and candies we had a great time in class with all the decorated boxes!

Finally we lined up and walked over to the Parish Hall to meet our 1st grade buddies to exchange Valentine Cards. There were cakes, candies and cookies all with pink and red hearts; the mom's looked pleased and happy for us. The day ended with Miss Cantillon receiving a beautiful bouquet plus a heart shaped box of candy and the fun of limboing to music!

April 3

This morning it was free dress and everybody was excited. Our morning work was to do lesson 13 bible verse. Then after we finished we had to read. After we had to do a multiplication speed drill. 120 seconds passed and we worked on mountain math in partners. Miss Cantillon said, “Stop doing mountain math and take out our math homework to check it,” we all did. We are doing a dream bedroom for a school project so we took them out and started working on them. 1-5 min. passed and we went to art. During art we worked on a bird collage that we have been working on for a couple of weeks. 20 min passed witch passed quickly for me passed. We went back to the classroom and we started to work on our vocabulary scripts.

It was time for recess so we lined up and went outside. During recess I played ping pong with Amanda. When we came in everybody was very hot especially me but we had to start spelling so the class and I pulled out our spelling notebooks. We filled out 2 paged then we corrected them. I was happy to change to math because math is my favorite subject. During math we played a round of heads up then we played 2 rounds of 24.

Lunch! I’m so hungry. During lunch I played ping pong with Amanda and Tiffany. 10 min. before lunch ended Amanda and I had to clean up the senior yard. When we came in from lunch it was D.E.A.R. Finally D.E.A.R. was over and we had to get in a circle for our lit. Discussion. Since we got to the bottom of our paper clip chain we got to have another recess. During that recess I played ping pong. When we came back in we worked on our Dream Bedrooms and our state recipe book. After a long time we went to computers and took a test on typing master. When we came back in we had to pack up really quickly because we were running behind.  Thank for reading Bye!
