Pluralism Ð the existence within a society of a number of different ethnic, racial, religious, and social groups

Introduction

-Many different cultures all living together

-Some examples: Cajun music, French and Caribbean music, brass bands, people dressed up like American Indians , many different foods

Where is New Orleans?

-New Orleans at mouth of Mississippi River

-People from all different backgrounds Ð American Indians and European Explorers Ð came down the M. River from the north

-From south, many different countries entered the M. River through the Gulf of Mexico

-At different times, France and Spain governed New Orleans, more came during the Civil War

Who Lives in New Orleans

-Population has changed since Hurricane Katrina

-Creoles have French or Spanish backgrounds and show great diversity of New Orleans

-People work together in a pluralistic society and appreciate each otherÕs differences

How is America Like New Orleans?

-There are many other diverse parts of our country

  1. By the early 1900s, many Americans wanted to limit immigration.  Why do you think some people felt this way?
  2. Do you consider San Diego to be a pluralistic community?  What about our school?
  3. Is a pluralistic society like a big pot of stew?  Why or why not?
