We are
starting our unit on explorers.
Your job will be to choose an explorer to research and then teach the
class all about your explorer. You
will use different resources - Websites, books, articles, etc. in your research.
You
will be responsible for teaching us:
1
Who your
explorer is
2
Why he was
important
3
What impact
he had on the Americas and on the world
4
When and where he made his journey
5
How he
traveled
6
Interesting/unknown facts about your explorer
Your oral
presentation will
consist of the following:
*5 minute presentation using note cards in outline form, weÕll
go over this in class; all points mentioned above must be included. You may choose to rewrite the cards in
paragraph form for your presentation.
*A
portrait/picture of your explorer (handmade) - be creative!
*A symbol representing your explorer, (e.g. homemade compass, map,
boat, hat)
*8 PowerPoint slides
*You
will give your report in first person, as if you were the explorer. This means you should say ÒIÓ instead
of Òhe.Ó To make your presentation
more interesting, you may choose to take on an accent and/or wear a simple
costume.
*In
school, we will create 8 slides using PowerPoint. The first slide will be a title slide for your explorer. Slide 2 will be a 3-5 bulleted points about who your explorer was; slide 3 will be 3-5 bulleted points about why he was important; slide 4 will be 3-5 bulleted points about the impact he had on the Americas and the world; slide 5 will be 3-5 bulleted points about when and where he made his journey; slide 6 will be 3-5 bulleted points about how he traveled; slide 7 will be up to 5 interesting/unknown facts about your explorer. For slide 8 you will show a map of the world, and you will trace your
explorerÕs voyage on the SmartBoard.
The
first part of your project is due on ________________. You must look through the list of
explorers and decide on an explorer you would like to study. On this day, you will need to bring in 2
Internet articles and 2 articles from books.
Some of the explorers listed can be found in your Social Studies
textbook. Even if your explorer is
in the text, you will still need to utilize Internet and library
resources. Make sure you will
be able to find enough information about your explorer to do the research.
**Note
cards must have the letter(s) of the source(s) listed at the top of each card.
**All
of the following will count toward your final grade for the project.
DEADLINES:
