Postcard Geography

Our students send postcards through the mail (and through email) to our national and international pen pals. Students love receiving mail and eagerly count the days until they get a response. What a great way to learn about life in another part of the world!

Here are a few of the online postcards we've received!

Hello From Richmond, Virginia!

Richmond, VA was founded in 1607 by Captains Christopher Newport and John Smith. William Byrd II named the city Richmond because the bend in the James River looks like the bend of the Thames river in Richmond, England.

Richmond is the home of the first American hospital, first U.S. canal system, the nation's first African American governor, the first successful electric streetcar system, and in 1948, the South's first television station.

Richmond, VA is located 100 miles south of Washington, D.C..

The current population of Richmond is 853,700

Richmond is called, "The city of monuments" because it has many statues.

Come and visit Richmond, Virginia!

We look forward to hearing about where you live!

Dear pals,

Hi! We are from the city of San Bernardino in
southern California. Our school, Urbita Elementary,
is a great place to learn. We recently celebrated our
school's 125th birthday. Twenty people are in our
class. We go to our school garden and grow plants.
For fun, we like to play soccer and skateboard.

We live near many wonderful attractions. We can see
the mountains from our playgrounds. There are lakes
in the mountains. We have museums nearby and
amusement parks like Knott's Berry Farm.

The first McDonald's restaurant is in San Bernardino.
We have a big celebration every year called Route 66
where people bring old cars. We also have our own
minor league baseball team, the Inland Empire 66ers.
San Bernardino is a good place to live.

Your second grade friends in Mrs. Gregory's class.

Hello from Johnstown, Ohio.

This is a picture of our town hall which sits in the middle of our little town. Our town is approximately 30 miles northeast of Columbus, OHIO, sitting at the intersection of Route 62 and Route 37. We have a population of around 10,000.

Johnstown is a community built around the ideas of the founding fathers. We enjoy a small town atmosphere while being able to offer a wide variety of activities. Johnstown is a working community with many opportunities for employment, housing, recreation and cultural activities.

Johnstown continues to be a community of small farmers who grow corn, soy beans, and wheat. Many farmers raise dairy cattle and hogs.

One of our major manufacturing companies is Tech International. They produce tire patches and other rubber products.

We are the 5th graders of Mrs. Predieri and Mrs. M. Smith

Greetings!

We are a fourth grade class from Akron, Ohio. Our school is called David Hill Elementary School. We will eventually send real postcards to all of you, but wanted to introduce ourselves. Akron is a large city about an hour south of Lake Erie. We used to be the rubber capital of the world but are now know for Polymer Research. We live in a really exciting area. Our sports teams are the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Cleveland Browns. The Ohio and Erie Canal used to run through our city and you can still see remnants of it. Also we are located near the Pro Football Hall of Fame, National Inventors Hall of Fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. We have an awesome amusement park, Cedar Point, which is very close as well. There is so much to tell you! If you want to learn more about us, visit http://www.discoverohio.com The attached pictures are of the Amish because we have a large Amish population about 45 minutes south of us. There is also a picture of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame which is a really neat looking building.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Villanova's Class
